    Taurine metabolism and effects of inclusion levels in rotifer (Brachionus rotundiformis, Tschugunoff, 1921) on Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, L.) larvae

    Taurine appears to be a crucial nutrient for teleosts, especially top predator species such as Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, L.; ABT). While dietary taurine supplementation has been highly recommended, there is a lack of studies on taurine assimilation and biosynthesis for this iconic species. The present study aims to provide insight into the molecular mechanisms involved in taurine biosynthesis and transport in ABT by studying tissue distribution and ontogenetic development of expression of cysteine dioxygenase (cdo), cysteine sulfinic acid decarboxylase (csad), 2-aminoethanethiol dioxygenase (ado) and taurine transporter (tauT) in response to graded levels of dietary taurine supplementation. The full open reading frame (ORF) for cdo and partial sequences for csad, ado and tauT were obtained, with the translated polypeptides being 202, 176, 166 and 324 amino acids, respectively. All three showed characteristics such as cupin motifs in Cdo and predicted N-glycosylation sites in Taut that are common to these genes in other species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the ABT sequences clustered with sequences of other teleosts, and separately from mammals and molluscs. Tissue distribution varied, with adipose tissue, kidney, white muscle and testis/brain showing highest expression of cdo, csad, ado and tauT, respectively. Whole larvae expression of csad peaked at 15 dah, whereas the other genes generally increased throughout development to show highest expression at 25 dah. The nutritional trial was carried out by feeding ABT larvae from mouth opening to 14 days after hatching (dah) with rotifers (Brachionus rotundiformis) enriched with 4 different levels of taurine: 0.0 (tau0), 0.5 (tau0.5), 1.0 (tau1), and 2.0 g taurine per 106 rotifers (tau2). Rotifers effectively accumulated taurine with ABT larvae fed on treatment tau2 attaining the highest concentration of taurine. However, ABT larvae fed tau1 displayed higher growth and survival, and flexion index at 14 dah, than larvae fed the other taurine levels. Larvae fed tau1 also showed generally higher expression of tauT and cdo and digestive and antioxidant enzyme genes. While this study showed that larval ABT express taurine metabolism genes, suggesting possible synthesis that could contribute to the taurine pool in the fish, larval performance was enhanced by a level of dietary taurine (3.7 mg taurine g−1 rotifer) supplied by enrichment of rotifers at 1 g taurine per 106 rotifers.En prensa2,04

    El presente artículo realiza una aproximación general a la filosofía de Francisco Suárez, considerado por muchos el canal principal a través del cual se transmitió al pensamiento moderno la filosofía de Escoto y Ockham, con el objeto de mostrar la relevancia de sus aportaciones para la configuración de la economía moderna. El esfuerzo de Suárez para poner fin a los problemas políticos del siglo XVI, fundamentado en la idea de “naturaleza pura”, propició – aunque no intencionalmente– un enfoque secular, dando lugar a una concepción racionalista y estática de la ley, con importantes consecuencias en la configuración del nuevo orden social y político. Contrastando de manera sintética y general este original enfoque con el de Tomás de Aquino, al que consideramos el principal exponente del paradigma clásico, pretendemos mostrar su influencia en la génesis de la teoría económica moderna.This paper takes a general approach to the philosophy of Francisco Suarez in order to show the importance of his contributions to the configuration of modern economics. Indeed many consider Suárez to be the main channel through which Duns Scotus and William of Ockham´s philosophy was transmitted to modern thought. Although not intentionally, Suárez’s effort to end the political problems of the sixteenth century, based on the idea of “pure nature”, led to a secular conception of the world, which resulted in a rationalist and static conception of law with important consequences in shaping the new social and political order. Herein, we contrast this original approach with that of Thomas Aquinas, who we consider the leading exponent of the classical paradigm, to demonstrate the influence Suárez had on the genesis of modern economic theory

    This article examines on the foundations of innovation in economic and business theory. After a brief review of the main problems that econo- mic theory faces in its attempt to fit innovation into its mechanical and biologist models, the need for a more robust epistemology and anthropology comes to light for understanding the practical character of human action and its free and social nature. To this end, we undertake an anthropological approach to quintessentially human manifestations –language and working order to recover the meaning of innovation and overcome its tension with tradition, which is an expression of the struggle that occurs between nature and history when using a reductive theory of knowledge and a false anthropology.El presente artículo reflexiona sobre los fundamentos del fenómeno de la innovación en la economía y en la empresa. Tras un breve recorrido por los principales inconvenientes con que se topó la teoría económica en su intento por dar cabida a la innovación en sus modelos de corte mecánico o biologicista, se pone de manifiesto la necesidad de una epistemología y antropología más robustas para comprender el carácter práctico de la acción humana y su naturaleza comunitaria y libre. A tal fin se realiza una aproximación antropológica a las principales manifestaciones humanas culturales –el lenguaje y el trabajo– para recuperar el sentido de la innovación y superar la tensión con la tradición, expresión de la pugna que se produce entre naturaleza e historia cuando se adoptan una teoría del conocimiento reductiva y una antropología falsa

    Safety and efficacy of the bumped kinase inhibitor BKI-1553 in pregnant sheep experimentally infected with Neospora caninum tachyzoites

    Neospora caninum is one of the main causes of abortion in cattle, and recent studies have highlighted its relevance as an abortifacient in small ruminants. Vaccines or drugs for the control of neosporosis are lacking. Bumped kinase inhibitors (BKIs), which are ATP-competitive inhibitors of calcium dependent protein kinase 1 (CDPK1), were shown to be highly efficacious against several apicomplexan parasites in vitro and in laboratory animal models. We here present the pharmacokinetics, safety and efficacy of BKI-1553 in pregnant ewes and foetuses using a pregnant sheep model of N. caninum infection. BKI-1553 showed exposure in pregnant ewes with trough concentrations of approximately 4 µM, and of 1 µM in foetuses. Subcutaneous BKI-1553 administration increased rectal temperatures shortly after treatment, and resulted in dermal nodules triggering a slight monocytosis after repeated doses at short intervals. BKI-1553 treatment decreased fever in infected pregnant ewes already after two applications, resulted in a 37–50% reduction in foetal mortality, and modulated immune responses; IFN¿ levels were increased early after infection and IgG levels were reduced subsequently. N. caninum was abundantly found in placental tissues; however, parasite detection in foetal brain tissue decreased from 94% in the infected/untreated group to 69–71% in the treated groups. In summary, BKI-1553 confers partial protection against abortion in a ruminant experimental model of N. caninum infection during pregnancy. In addition, reduced parasite detection, parasite load and lesions in foetal brains were observed

    Search for Higgs bosons decaying to tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, were collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the 95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a scalar resonance decaying into tautau pairs, and we then interpret these limits as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL

    Measurement of the photon+b+b-jet production differential cross section in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV

    We present measurements of the differential cross section dsigma/dpT_gamma for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a b-quark jet for photons with rapidities |y_gamma|< 1.0 and 30<pT_gamma <300 GeV, as well as for photons with 1.5<|y_gamma|< 2.5 and 30< pT_gamma <200 GeV, where pT_gamma is the photon transverse momentum. The b-quark jets are required to have pT>15 GeV and rapidity |y_jet| < 1.5. The results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^-1, recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppˉp\bar{p} Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The measured cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations using different sets of parton distribution functions as well as to predictions based on the kT-factorization QCD approach, and those from the Sherpa and Pythia Monte Carlo event generators.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys.     Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW, WZ and Wgamma production in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    We present final searches of the anomalous gammaWW and ZWW trilinear gauge boson couplings from WW and WZ production using lepton plus dijet final states and a combination with results from Wgamma, WW, and WZ production with leptonic final states. The analyzed data correspond to up to 8.6/fb of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector in pp-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. We set the most stringent limits at a hadron collider to date assuming two different relations between the anomalous coupling parameters Delta\kappa_\gamma, lambda, and Delta g_1^Z for a cutoff energy scale Lambda=2 TeV. The combined 68% C.L. limits are -0.057<Delta\kappa_\gamma<0.154, -0.015<lambda<0.028, and -0.008<Delta g_1^Z<0.054 for the LEP parameterization, and -0.007<Delta\kappa<0.081 and -0.017<lambda<0.028 for the equal couplings parameterization. We also present the most stringent limits of the W boson magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL

    Measurement of three-jet differential cross sections d sigma-3jet / d M-3jet in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

    We present the first measurement of the inclusive three-jet differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets with the largest transverse momenta in an event in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The measurement is made in different rapidity regions and for different jet transverse momentum requirements and is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb^{-1} collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are used to test the three-jet matrix elements in perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. The data allow discrimination between parametrizations of the parton distribution functions of the proton.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Lett.     Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in muon+tau final states

    We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks (t~1\tilde{t}_{1}), the lightest supersymmetric partners of the top quarks, in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of {7.3 fb1fb^{-1}} collected with the \dzero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Each scalar top quark is assumed to decay into a bb quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino (ν~\tilde{\nu}). We investigate final states arising from t~1t~1ˉbbˉμτν~ν~\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}\mu\tau \tilde{\nu} \tilde{\nu} and t~1t~1ˉbbˉττν~ν~\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}\tau\tau \tilde{\nu} \tilde{\nu}. With no significant excess of events observed above the background expected from the standard model, we set exclusion limits on this production process in the (mt~1m_{\tilde{t}_{1}},mν~m_{\tilde{\nu}}) plane.Comment: Submitted to Phys.
