Is resistance to ischaemia of motor axons in diabetic subjects due to membrane depolarization?
The reasons for the resistance to ischaemia of peripheral nerves in diabetics are not well understood. We have now explored whether axonal depolarization underlies this phenomenon, as has previously been proposed. Resistance to ischaemia was determined by the new method of âthreshold trackingâ. This method revealed an increase in excitability of the peroneal nerve at the popliteal fossa during ischaemia, and a decrease in excitability in the post-ischaemic period. The extent of these alterations in 28 type 1 diabetics without peripheral neuropathy showed a strong correlation with the mean blood glucose concentrations during the last 24 h before examination. To test whether the ischaemic resistance was related to membrane potential, we also measured axonal superexcitability in 11 selected diabetics, since it has been shown that post-spike changes in excitability depend on membrane potential. Changes in excitability of the peroneal nerve were measured in the period between 10 and 30 msec following a conditioning supramaximal compound action potential. Under resting conditions, no differences in the post-spike superexcitability were found between controls and diabetics, despite striking differences in their responses to a 10-min pressure cuff. These observations indicate that membrane depolarization is not involved in the resistance to ischaemia of motor axons in diabetic subjects
Anomalous CP-Violation in B_s-Bbar_s Mixing Due to a Light Spin-One Particle
The recent measurement of the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in
semileptonic b-hadron decays by the D0 Collaboration is about 3 sigmas away
from the standard-model prediction, hinting at the presence of CP-violating new
physics in the mixing of B_s mesons. We consider the possibility that this
anomalous result arises from the contribution of a light spin-1 particle.
Taking into account various experimental constraints, we find that the effect
of such a particle with mass below the b-quark mass can yield a prediction
consistent with the anomalous D0 measurement within its one-sigma range.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, somewhat expanded, references added, main

Immunosuppressive treatment in multifocal motor neuropathy
We report the results of immunosuppressive treatments of 13 patients with multifocal motor neuropathy and elevated titers of serum antibodies to the GM1 ganglioside. All patients failed to respond to oral prednisone. There was no clinical response in 4 patients treated with plasma exchange. Nine patients received cyclophosphamide, with clinical improvement and fall in antibody titers in 8. In 3 patients, cyclophosphamide was discontinued with ensuing clinical relapse and rise in the titers of serum anti-GM1 antibodies. The Role of CD4+CD25bright Regulatory T Cells in the Maintenance of Pregnancy, Premature Rupture of Membranes, and Labor
Translation and preliminary validation of a Korean version of the parental reflective functioning questionnaire
This study aimed to explore the factor structure, reliability, and validity of a Korean translation of the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ). The PRFQ consists of three subscales: prementalizing modes , certainty about mental states , and interest and curiosity in mental states . A convenience sample of 163 Korean parents completed the KâPRFQ. Exploratory factor analysis showed three factors mapped on to the original PRFQ factors, but items from the original prementalizing modes subscale clustered into two additional factors. Data from a subsample (n = 67) showed that the certainty about mental states and interest and curiosity in mental states subscales correlated positively with more optimal selfâreported parenting. We discuss the validity of using the PRFQ in collectivistic culture
Clues from nearby galaxies to a better theory of cosmic evolution
The great advances in the network of cosmological tests show that the
relativistic Big Bang theory is a good description of our expanding universe.
But the properties of nearby galaxies that can be observed in greatest detail
suggest a still better theory would more rapidly gather matter into galaxies

Neutral Gauge Boson Contributions to the Dimuon Charge Asymmetry in B Decays
Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon
charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the
standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a
new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to
explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be
present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we
examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing
Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce the
measured values of the indirect CP asymmetry S_psi-phi in Bs -> J/psi phi, and
Delta Gamma_s, the Bs-Bsbar width difference. We find that the ZFCNC model
cannot reproduce the present measured values of S_psi-phi and a_sl^s within
their 1sigma ranges. On the other hand, in the Z'FCNC model, the values of all

Metabolism during anaesthesia and recovery in colic and healthy horses: a microdialysis study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Muscle metabolism in horses has been studied mainly by analysis of substances in blood or plasma and muscle biopsy specimens. By using microdialysis, real-time monitoring of the metabolic events in local tissue with a minimum of trauma is possible. There is limited information about muscle metabolism in the early recovery period after anaesthesia in horses and especially in the colic horse. The aims were to evaluate the microdialysis technique as a complement to plasma analysis and to study the concentration changes in lactate, pyruvate, glucose, glycerol, and urea during anaesthesia and in the recovery period in colic horses undergoing abdominal surgery and in healthy horses not subjected to surgery.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Ten healthy university-owned horses given anaesthesia alone and ten client-owned colic horses subjected to emergency abdominal surgery were anaesthetised for a mean (range) of 230 min (193â273) and 208 min (145â300) respectively. Venous blood samples were taken before anaesthesia. Venous blood sampling and microdialysis in the gluteal muscle were performed during anaesthesia and until 24 h after anaesthesia. Temporal changes and differences between groups were analysed with an ANOVA for repeated measures followed by Tukey Post Hoc test or Planned Comparisons.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Lactate, glucose and urea, in both dialysate and plasma, were higher in the colic horses than in the healthy horses for several hours after recovery to standing. In the colic horses, lactate, glucose, and urea in dialysate, and lactate in plasma increased during the attempts to stand. The lactate-to-pyruvate ratio was initially high in sampled colic horses but decreased over time. In the colic horses, dialysate glycerol concentrations varied considerably whereas in the healthy horses, dialysate glycerol was elevated during anaesthesia but decreased after standing. In both groups, lactate concentration was higher in dialysate than in plasma. The correspondence between dialysate and plasma concentrations of glucose, urea and glycerol varied.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Microdialysis proved to be suitable in the clinical setting for monitoring of the metabolic events during anaesthesia and recovery. It was possible with this technique to show greater muscle metabolic alterations in the colic horses compared to the healthy horses in response to regaining the standing position.</p
Nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering analysis to 2.5 GeV
A partial-wave analysis of NN elastic scattering data has been completed.
This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory
kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp scattering
data from the EDDA collaboration. The results of both single-energy and
