Role of the cyclic lipopeptide massetolide A in biological control of Phytophthora infestans and in colonization of tomato plants by Pseudomonas fluorescens
Pseudomonas strains have shown promising results in biological control of late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. However, the mechanism(s) and metabolites involved are in many cases poorly understood. Here, the role of the cyclic lipopeptide massetolide A of Pseudomonas fluorescens SS101 in biocontrol of tomato late blight was examined. Pseudomonas fluorescens SS101 was effective in preventing infection of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) leaves by P. infestans and significantly reduced the expansion of existing late blight lesions. Massetolide A was an important component of the activity of P. fluorescens SS101, since the massA-mutant was significantly less effective in biocontrol, and purified massetolide A provided significant control of P. infestans, both locally and systemically via induced resistance. Assays with nahG transgenic plants indicated that the systemic resistance response induced by SS101 or massetolide A was independent of salicylic acid signalling. Strain SS101 colonized the roots of tomato seedlings significantly better than its massA-mutant, indicating that massetolide A was an important trait in plant colonization. This study shows that the cyclic lipopeptide surfactant massetolide A is a metabolite with versatile functions in the ecology of P fluorescens SS101 and in interactions with tomato plants and the late blight pathogen P. infestans
hispanoamericanos.
The present investigation, compiles a corpus of representations archetypical in the light
of theory about the collective unconscious and the archeotype raised by Carls Gustav
Jung. The configuration of the representations were presented with pre-columbian
myths, subsequently to it through the method of Gilbert Duran called mitochritic, was
verified the validity of the representation in the stories of Hispanic -American authors.
Likewise, a didactic unit was designed to transform the teaching of myth in the ninth
grade of the educational institution Alberto Castilla, in order to expand from the theory of
Mircea Eliade and of Carl Jung the concept of myth, and the corpus of stories read by
the students, in order to discover the archetypal convergences, the symbolic attributes
and the sacred character that demonstrates the current relationship between myth and
man. Finally the students had the opportunity to update myths, archetypes and
representations, through a process of writing mini-stories through the workshop as a
space for learning, play and creation.

BIOTECHNOLOGY ISSUES FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES - New biotechnological applications of coconuts
Coconut is a major crop of many poor nations. The present paper shows
with inexpensive fluorescence microscopy of the enhanced green
fluorescent protein (EGFP), that coconut water has the capability of
synthesizing proteins from recombinant DNA vectors. After only 4 hrs of
100 pM application of the EGFP plasmid (pEGFP), a strong fluorescent
signal was detected with an off-the-shelf, low-tech CCD webcam. Since
natural coconut water is sterile, this heat-stable delivery system may
be a good option for the dissemination of food supplements and
pharmaceuticals in poor nations. As expensive substances could be
expressed in coconut water, through bioreactor technology or
micropropagation, the concepts presented here may prove invaluable to
the economic and social advancement of many developing countries
Supersymmetric Kaluza-Klein reductions of M-waves and MKK-monopoles
We investigate the Kaluza-Klein reductions to ten dimensions of the purely
gravitational half-BPS M-theory backgrounds: the M-wave and the Kaluza-Klein
monopole. We determine the moduli space of smooth (supersymmetric) Kaluza-Klein
reductions by classifying the freely-acting spacelike Killing vectors which
preserve some Killing spinor. As a consequence we find a wealth of new
supersymmetric IIA configurations involving composite and/or bound-state
configurations of waves, D0 and D6-branes, Kaluza-Klein monopoles in type IIA
and flux/nullbranes, and some other new configurations. Some new features
raised by the geometry of the Taub-NUT space are discussed, namely the
existence of reductions with no continuous moduli. We also propose an
interpretation of the flux 5-brane in terms of the local description (close to
the branes) of a bound state of D6-branes and ten-dimensional Kaluza-Klein
monopoles.Comment: 36 pages (v2: Reference added, "draft" mode disabled; v3: two

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? The present work describes the phytochemical and pharmacological investigation on extracts of the leaves and stems and flowers of the species Plectranthus neochilus Schltr. belonged to the family Lamiaceae. The plant is aromatic herb popularly known in Brazil as ?boldo? or ?boldo-gamb??, and as the species P. barbatus Andrews (?boldo-brasileiro") e P. ornatus Codd. ("boldinho"), according to ethnopharmacological survey, is often used in the treatment of hepatic insufficiency and dyspepsia, replacing the Peumus boldus Molina (?boldo-do-chile?). The phytochemical investigation of the hexanic extract of the P. neochilus leaves and stems yielded two triterpenes: ?-amyrin (PN1) e friedelin (PN2). The compound ?-amirin was isolated as a fatty acid ester in position C-3. In this extract was also obtained the mixture of the steroids sitosterol and stigmasterol (PN3). The phytochemical study conducted with the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves and stems gave the methoxy flavone at positions C-6 and C-7, the cirsimartin (PN4). All compounds obtained were first described in the species. Structural elucidation of isolated compounds was based on spectroscopic analysis of 1D NMR, HPLC, ESY and by comparison with data found in literature. The methanol extract of leaves and stems of P. neochilus showed significant antioxidant activity when evaluated by the DPPH method, followed by the extract in ethyl acetate and hexane. We also evaluate the methanol extract of flowers of the species that showed activity lower than that observed for the methanolic extract from leaves and stems, and these activities confirmed for the content of phenolic extracts. The anticholinesterase activity of extracts of leaves and stems and flowers of P. neochilus was evaluated and found to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase to all extracts studied

Flotation can be used for the concentration of low-grade manganese ores, as was established for low-grade iron ores, as it is suitable for processing complex ores with silicated gangue, with considerable proportion of iron oxides and wad, besides the fine granulometry to liberation. The literature reports the flotation as a technique able to concentrate the low-grade manganese but doesn't explore much the fundamentals of the process, such as the influence of ionic species on the gangue minerals behavior. Thus, the research focus was to study the effect of Mn2+ on quartz and spessartine, as assisting the depressor reagents. Large quantities of certain minerals associated with gondite, such as quartz (above 50%) and spessartine shows the difficulties to concentrate this ore. However, microflotation studies showed that pH 10 was determinant, since, for quartz conditioned with sodium silicate in this pH, the floatability reduction was equal to 12.97%, while for spessartine such reduction was 33.85%. Superficial Al3+ and Mn2+ ions, not hydroxylated at pH 10, can act as anchor points for species such as SiO (OH)3 - and Si4O6(OH)6 2-, able to adsorb on the mineral surface by chemical mechanisms. The addition order between the depressor reagent and Mn2+ showed to be significant, in which the addition of the ion acts to determining the more effectively minerals depression. The fatty acid amide collector associated with sodium silicate led to results with lower recoveries for quartz and spessartine. Whereas the same collector, with sodium silicate and in the presence of Mn2+ ions, provided the best pyrolusite recovery. However, considering only the collectors' addition was noted that sodium oleate was the best having to recovered 84.44% of pyrolusite. In the route evaluation stage for gondite concentration, as a secondary objective, bench flotation results using sodium oleate was similar to that with fatty acid amide. The Mn2+ additions after sodium silicate showed improvement besides the reduction of manganese losses to tailings and simultaneously increase of silica in the same product, which may only be due to quartz depression. On the other hand, when Mn2+ ions were added before sodium silicate, manganese and silica were increased in the tailings, probably due to the preferential spessartine depression. Sodium oleate (500 g/t) with Mn2+ (500 g/t) added before sodium silicate led to better manganese recovery in the concentrate. Fatty acid amide seemed to have less influence on silica floatability, contributing to a greater recovery of this compound in the tailing. The gondite magnetic concentration (rougher step) showed to be viable, recoveries of 92.48% (22.84% Mn) and 90.74% (22.25% Mn) to field magnetic of 15,500 and 12,000 Gauss, respectively
