Using Foreign Virtual Patients With Medical Students in Germany: Are Cultural Differences Evident and Do They Impede Learning?
Background: Learning with virtual patients (VPs) is considered useful in medical education for fostering clinical reasoning. As the authoring of VPs is highly demanding, an international exchange of cases might be desirable. However, cultural differences in foreign VPs might hamper learning success. Objective: We investigated the need for support for using VPs from the United States at a German university, with respect to language and cultural differences. Our goal was to better understand potential implementation barriers of a intercultural VP exchange. Methods: Two VPs were presented to 30 German medical students featuring a cultural background different from German standards with respect to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ethical aspects, role models, and language (as identified by a cultural adaptation framework). Participants were assigned to two groups: 14 students were advised to complete the cases without further instructions (basic group), and 16 students received written explanatory supplemental information specifically with regard to cultural differences (supplement group). Using a 6-point scale (6=strongly agree), we analyzed the results of an integrated assessment of learning success as well as an evaluation of cases by the students on usefulness for learning and potential issues regarding the language and cultural background. Results: The German students found it motivating to work with cases written in English (6-point scale, 4.5 points). The clinical relevance of the VPs was clearly recognized (6 points), and the foreign language was considered a minor problem in this context (3 points). The results of the integrated learning assessment were similar in both groups (basic 53% [SD 4] vs supplement 52% [ SD 4] correct answers, P=.32). However, students using the supplemental material more readily realized culturally different diagnostic and therapeutic strategies (basic 4 vs supplement 5 points, P=.39) and were less affirmative when asked about the transferability of cases to a German context (basic 5 vs supplement 3 points, P=.048). Conclusions: German students found English VPs to be highly clinically relevant, and they rated language problems much lower than they rated motivation to work on cases in English. This should encourage the intercultural exchange of VPs. The provision of supplemental explanatory material facilitates the recognition of cultural differences and might help prevent unexpected learning effects

Thermal Conductivity across the Phase Diagram of Cuprates: Low-Energy Quasiparticles and Doping Dependence of the Superconducting Gap
Heat transport in the cuprate superconductors YBaCuO and
LaSrCuO was measured at low temperatures as a function of
doping. A residual linear term kappa_{0}/T is observed throughout the
superconducting region and it decreases steadily as the Mott insulator is
approached from the overdoped regime. The low-energy quasiparticle gap
extracted from kappa_{0}/T is seen to scale closely with the pseudogap. The
ubiquitous presence of nodes and the tracking of the pseudogap shows that the
overall gap remains of the pure d-wave form throughout the phase diagram, which
excludes the possibility of a complex component (ix) appearing at a putative
quantum phase transition and argues against a non-superconducting origin to the
pseudogap. A comparison with superfluid density measurements reveals that the
quasiparticle effective charge is weakly dependent on doping and close to

GEMINI 3D spectroscopy of BAL+IR+Fe II QSOs: II. IRAS 04505-2958 an explosive QSO with hypershell and a new scenario for galaxy formation and galaxy end
From a study of BAL + IR + Fe II QSOs (using deep Gemini GMOS-IFU
spectroscopy) new results are presented: for IRAS 04505-2958. Specifically, we
have studied in detail the out flow (OF) process and their associated
structures, mainly at two large galactic scales: (i) two blobs/shells (S1, S2)
at radius r = 1.1 and 2.2 kpc; and (ii) an external hypergiant shell (S3) at r
= 11 kpc. In addition, the presence of two very extended hypergiant shells (S4,
S5) at r = 80 kpc is discussed. From this GMOS study the following main results
were obtained: (i) For the external hypergiant shell S3 the kinematics GMOS
maps of the ionized gas show very similar features to those observed for the
prototype of exploding external supergiant shell: in NGC 5514. (ii) The main
knots K1, K2 and K3 -of this hypergiant shell S3- show a stellar population and
emission line ratios associated with the presence of a starburst + OF/shocks.
(iii) The internal shells S1 and S2 show structures, OF components and
properties very similar to those detected in the nuclear shells of Mrk 231.
(iv) The shells S1+S2 and S3 are aligned at PA = 131: i.e. suggesting that the
OF process is in the blow-out phase with bipolar structure. In addition, the
shells S4 and S5 (at 80-100 kpc scale) are aligned at PA = 40, i.e.: a bipolar
OF perpendicular to the internal OF. Finally, the generation of UHE cosmic rays
and neutrino/ dark-matter -associated with HyNe in BAL + IR + Fe II QSOs- is

A crossmodal crossover: opposite effects of visual and auditory perceptual load on steady-state evoked potentials to irrelevant visual stimuli
Mechanisms of attention are required to prioritise goal-relevant sensory events under conditions of stimulus competition. According to the perceptual load model of attention, the extent to which task-irrelevant inputs are processed is determined by the relative demands of discriminating the target: the more perceptually demanding the target task, the less unattended stimuli will be processed. Although much evidence supports the perceptual load model for competing stimuli within a single sensory modality, the effects of perceptual load in one modality on distractor processing in another is less clear. Here we used steady-state evoked potentials (SSEPs) to measure neural responses to irrelevant visual checkerboard stimuli while participants performed either a visual or auditory task that varied in perceptual load. Consistent with perceptual load theory, increasing visual task load suppressed SSEPs to the ignored visual checkerboards. In contrast, increasing auditory task load enhanced SSEPs to the ignored visual checkerboards. This enhanced neural response to irrelevant visual stimuli under auditory load suggests that exhausting capacity within one modality selectively compromises inhibitory processes required for filtering stimuli in another
Deep GEMINI GMOS-IFU spectroscopy of BAL QSOs: I. Decoupling the BAL, QSO, starburst, NLR, supergiant bubbles and galactic wind in Mrk 231
In this work we present the first results of a study of BAL QSOs (at low and
high redshift), based on very deep Gemini GMOS integral field spectroscopy. In
particular, the results obtained for the nearest BAL IR QSO Mrk 231 are
presented. Very deep three-dimensional spectra and maps clearly show that the
BAL systems I and II are extended (reaching 1.4-1.6" = 1.2-1.3 kpc, from the
nucleus) and clearly elongated at the position angle close to the radio jet PA.
Which suggest that the BAL systems I and II are both associated with the radio
jet, and supporting the bipolar jet-wind model for some BALs. For the nuclear
region of Mrk 231, the QSO and host-galaxy components were modelled, using a
new technique of decoupling 3D spectra. From this study, the following main
results were found: (i) in the pure host galaxy spectrum an extreme nuclear
starburst component was clearly observed, mainly as a very strong increase in
the flux, at the blue wavelengths; (ii) the BAL system I is observed in the
spectrum of the host galaxy; (iii) in the clean/pure QSO emission spectrum,
only broad lines were detected. 3D GMOS individual spectra (specially in the IR
Ca II triplet) and maps confirm the presence of an extreme and young nuclear
starburst (8 < age < 15 Myr), which was detected mainly in a ring or toroid
with a radius r = 0.3" = 200 pc, around the very nucleus. The physical
properties of the four expanding nuclear bubbles were analysed, using the GMOS
3D spectra and maps. These results suggest that an important part of the
nuclear NLR is generated by the OF process and the associated low velocity

Candida albicans AGE3, the Ortholog of the S. cerevisiae ARF-GAP-Encoding Gene GCS1, Is Required for Hyphal Growth and Drug Resistance
BACKGROUND: Hyphal growth and multidrug resistance of C. albicans are important features for virulence and antifungal therapy of this pathogenic fungus. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we show by phenotypic complementation analysis that the C. albicans gene AGE3 is the functional ortholog of the yeast ARF-GAP-encoding gene GCS1. The finding that the gene is required for efficient endocytosis points to an important functional role of Age3p in endosomal compartments. Most C. albicans age3Delta mutant cells which grew as cell clusters under yeast growth conditions showed defects in filamentation under different hyphal growth conditions and were almost completely disabled for invasive filamentous growth. Under hyphal growth conditions only a fraction of age3Delta cells shows a wild-type-like polarization pattern of the actin cytoskeleton and lipid rafts. Moreover, age3Delta cells were highly susceptible to several unrelated toxic compounds including antifungal azole drugs. Irrespective of the AGE3 genotype, C-terminal fusions of GFP to the drug efflux pumps Cdr1p and Mdr1p were predominantly localized in the plasma membrane. Moreover, the plasma membranes of wild-type and age3Delta mutant cells contained similar amounts of Cdr1p, Cdr2p and Mdr1p. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The results indicate that the defect in sustaining filament elongation is probably caused by the failure of age3Delta cells to polarize the actin cytoskeleton and possibly of inefficient endocytosis. The high susceptibility of age3Delta cells to azoles is not caused by inefficient transport of efflux pumps to the cell membrane. A possible role of a vacuolar defect of age3Delta cells in drug susceptibility is proposed and discussed. In conclusion, our study shows that the ARF-GAP Age3p is required for hyphal growth which is an important virulence factor of C. albicans and essential for detoxification of azole drugs which are routinely used for antifungal therapy.
