International patent protection: Time for a fully EU functioning supra-national patent mechanism
Larger industrial companies have become increasingly global in their functions
and aspirations. With regard to patents, it is increasingly common for a multinational company to
face alleged infringing acts committed by the same competitor in several countries. Securing
international patent protection both at the acquisition and the enforcement stage is the corollary
to the cross border exploitation of patents. The regulation of transnational trade and the
international exploitation of patent rights have brought about international agreements concerning
these closely related issues, such as international patent granting power, international
harmonization of patent laws and uniform systems of jurisdiction and choice of law rules
applicable to patent enforcement as well as other areas. However, there is an increasingly strained
relationship between international patent acquisition and enforcement1 which is the dominant
focus of this paper. Whilst a network of international agreements facilitates the grant of
increasingly similar patent rights in many countries, cross border patent enforcement through the
application of the relevant private international rules has been very weak. From a private
international law perspective, the legal independence and territorial limitations of patent rights
has severe implications for the application of the relevant jurisdictional and choice of law rules.
Therefore, cross-border adjudication has indeed been challenged in the patent area. This paper
seeks to focus on the problems associated with acquiring and enforcing patent rights at a multijurisdictional
level, particularly within the EU
Significance of Handedness in Baseball
For my STAT 499 senior project, I looked at data regarding handedness in batting versus handedness in pitching within Major League Baseball (MLB). It has been traditional in baseball to have batters in your lineup that swing from the side of the plate that is opposite from the pitchersâ throwing hand. For example, if the starting pitcher is right-handed, it would be more beneficial for the team to start as many left-handed batters as possible. My goal for this project was to test if there is a significant difference in performance between batters facing a same-handed pitcher versus an opposite-handed pitcher by comparing batting averages and other hitting statistics. The 2017, 2018, and 2019 regular seasons of MLB hitting data were used. Using Two-Way ANOVA tests and interaction plots, there is evidence of a significant difference in performance between batters facing a same-handed pitcher versus an opposite-handed pitcher

Policing and the surveillance of the marginal:Everyday contexts of social control
While the surveillance practices of the private security industry have become a central preoccupation of scholarship, the surveillance power of the state has been greatly enhanced through multiple procedures of information gathering to support practices of control and management. In this article, we draw upon two different research projects to examine the surveillance work of the police and other public sector groups working in partnership, as well as the activities of police officers operating covertly. In so doing, we expose the often unintended, but nevertheless invasive and comprehensive power of state agencies to gather details of individuals in the residual working class, within mundane and innocuous policing practices. Our central argument is that these developments have occurred alongside a displacement of social policy through crime control, and represent both an acceleration and intensification of existing state approaches to the surveillance of the problematic individual. This extensive project of targeted surveillance, we contend, also calls into question current claims that the state is moving towards a system of managing deviant populations. </jats:p

Invasion of the Mind Snatchers: A Nation Full of Traumatic Memories
The new national survey by Patihis and Pendergrast (this issue, p. 3) suggests that millions of people may have recovered traumatic memories that they spent large parts of their lives not thinking about. We wondered whether they are better off and suggest that more than a few may be worse off rather than better. Given this risk of therapy, should therapists be warning patients of the potential risks before conducting therapy? The answer is not clear as warning about risks can be risky itself. Overall, we propose that with so many people living with ârecoveredâ memories, future research now needs to address whether they are indeed better off and which methods would help achieve that goal
