Spin-polarized surface state of MnSb(0001)
Knowledge of the spin-dependent electronic structure at surfaces and interfaces plays an increasingly important role when assessing possible use of novel magnetic materials for spintronic applications. It is shown that spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy together with ab initio electronic structure methods provides a full characterization of the surface electronic structure of ferromagnetic MnSb(0 0 0 1). Two different surface reconstructions have been compared in spin- and angle-resolved valence-band photoemission. For annealing at elevated temperatures, the ( 1 x 1)-structure transforms into 2 x 2 and a majority-spin peak appears at - 1.7 eV inside a majority-spin bulk band gap at the surface Brillouin zone centre. Its sensitivity to oxygen supports an interpretation as magnetic compound surface state. Local spin density calculations predict at the same energy (- 1.75 eV) a prominent d(z)2 surface state of majority spin for ( 1 x 1)- Mn terminated MnSb(0 0 0 1) but no such feature for ( 1 x 1)-Sb termination. The calculation shows that neither the bulk nor the surface is half-metallic, in agreement with the expectation for the hexagonal NiAs structure
Decaying shock studies of phase transitions in MgOSiO2 systems: implications for the Super-Earths interiors
We report an experimental study of the phase diagrams of periclase (MgO),
enstatite (MgSiO3) and forsterite (Mg2SiO4) at high pressures. We investigated
with laser driven decaying shocks the pressure/temperature curves of MgO,
MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 between 0.2-1.2 TPa, 0.12-0.5 TPa and 0.2-0.85 TPa
respectively. A melting signature has been observed in MgO at 0.47 TPa and 9860
K, while no phase changes were observed neither in MgSiO3 nor in Mg2SiO4. An
increasing of reflectivity of MgO, MgSiO3 and Mg2SiO4 liquids have been
detected at 0.55 TPa -12 760 K, 0.15 TPa - 7540 K, 0.2 TPa - 5800 K,
respectively. In contrast to SiO2, melting and metallization of these compounds
do not coincide implying the presence of poor electrically conducting liquids
close to the melting lines. This has important implications for the generation
of dynamos in Super-earths mantles
A New Upper Limit for the Tau-Neutrino Magnetic Moment
Using a prompt neutrino beam in which a nu_tau component was identified for
the first time, the nu_tau magnetic moment was measured based on a search for
an anomalous increase in the number of neutrino-electron interactions. One such
event was observed when 2.3 were expected from background processes, giving an
upper 90% confidence limit of 3.9x10^-7 Bohr magnetons.Comment: 9 pages; 1 figur
Laser-Shock Compression and Hugoniot Measurements of Liquid Hydrogen to 55 GPa
The principal Hugoniot for liquid hydrogen was obtained up to 55 GPa under
laser-driven shock loading. Pressure and density of compressed hydrogen were
determined by impedance-matching to a quartz standard. The shock temperature
was independently measured from the brightness of the shock front. Hugoniot
data of hydrogen provide a good benchmark to modern theories of condensed
matter. The initial number density of liquid hydrogen is lower than that for
liquid deuterium, and this results in shock compressed hydrogen having a higher
compression and higher temperature than deuterium at the same shock pressure.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Physical

Observation of nu_tau appearance in the CNGS beam with the OPERA experiment
The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in
appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged
current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been
previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of
data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event,
with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events
without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of
analysed events and the low background, nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations are
established with a significance of 4.2sigma.Comment: Submitted to Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (PTEP
Associated Charm Production in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions
In this paper a search for associated charm production both in neutral and
charged current -nucleus interactions is presented. The improvement of
automatic scanning systems in the {CHORUS} experiment allows an efficient
search to be performed in emulsion for short-lived particles. Hence a search
for rare processes, like the associated charm production, becomes possible
through the observation of the double charm-decay topology with a very low
background. About 130,000 interactions located in the emulsion target
have been analysed. Three events with two charm decays have been observed in
the neutral-current sample with an estimated background of 0.180.05. The
relative rate of the associated charm cross-section in deep inelastic
interactions, has been
measured. One event with two charm decays has been observed in charged-current
interactions with an estimated background of 0.180.06 and the
upper limit on associated charm production in charged-current interactions at
90% C.L. has been found to be .Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Evidence for appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment
The OPERA experiment is designed to search for oscillations in appearance mode i.e. through the direct observation
of the lepton in charged current interactions. The
experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to
Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two candidates with a decaying
into hadrons were observed in a sub-sample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here
we report the observation of a third candidate in the
decay channel coming from the analysis of a sub-sample of the
2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of
oscillations is excluded at the 3.4
level.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table
A facility to Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) at the CERN SPS
A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS
accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make
measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large
number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS
400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light
long-lived exotic particles with masses below (10)~GeV/c,
including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental
programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future,
e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation.Comment: Technical Proposa
