    This research project examines the lives of Paul Frederick Jansen and his wife Maria Elizabeth White Jansen who were Presbyterian missionaries at the Culion leprosarium in the Philippines from 1922-1945. The Jansens were instrumental in the development of infrastructure at Culion and nourishing Protestant spiritual life there. Their daily advocacy and devotion for the lepers of Culion improved countless lives on the island. Very little has been written about the Jansens. There are a multitude of primary sources, like letters and mission board reports. These sources reveal the Jansens’ work ethic and opinion of their missionary work. The most integral source has been Quarterly of the American Mission to Lepers, Song after Sorrow: The Jansens of Culion which details the transnational story of their lives. They were just two of the countless missionaries who have followed God’s calling, traveled overseas, and made sacrifices for others. Their lives are worth remembering due to the care, fellowship, and service they offered to the lepers of Culion. Their work is not much different than that of Father Damien and Mother Teresa. There lives are remarkable, considering the time period in which they traversed to the Philippines. Here is a remarkable set of people and barely anyone has heard of their work. Why is this? They gave up all of their modern conveniences and traveled to a far off island where leprosy was rampant. To answer why the Jansens are worth remembering, first I must detail what makes a life worth remembering. Then analyze what about the Jansens’ lives make them memorable

    This research examines the outlook in approach to care for the leprosy patients at Culion Leprosarium in the Philippines through medical, social, and religious aspects of life at Culion. Frederick and Elizabeth Jansen, Presbyterian missionaries, received criticism for caring for Protestant leprosy patients as if they would never leave Culion. Tension between Protestants and Catholics at Culion revealed a disparity in the outlook of treatment for patients. Catholics tended to focus on treatment and recovery of patients with the objective of returning them to Filipino society. Protestant missionaries focused on establishing a lasting refuge for the patients at Culion. Would the patients with leprosy remain at Culion for their entire lives or would they eventually be cured and remain healthy enough to return to Filipino society? The Catholic and Protestant missionaries and doctors alleviated the physical and spiritual anguish of the people of Culion. In spite of this, apathy lingered among the patients. Patients cured of leprosy were allowed to return home or remain at Culion. The remaining patients participated in work, schooling, and farming at Culion. Frederick Jansen noted that work such as tailoring and carpentry, schooling, improved infrastructure, and availability of smallholdings for farming boosted the morale of patients

    Real-time sweat pH monitoring based on a wearable chemical barcode micro-fluidic platform incorporating ionic liquids

    This work presents the fabrication, characterisation and the performance of a wearable, robust, flexible and disposable chemical barcode device based on a micro-fluidic platform that incorporates ionic liquid polymer gels (ionogels). The device has been applied to the monitoring of the pH of sweat in real time during an exercise period. The device is an ideal wearable sensor for measuring the pH of sweat since it does not contents any electronic part for fluidic handle or pH detection and because it can be directly incorporated into clothing, head- or wristbands, which are in continuous contact with the skin. In addition, due to the micro-fluidic structure, fresh sweat is continuously passing through the sensing area providing the capability to perform continuous real time analysis. The approach presented here ensures immediate feedback regarding sweat composition.     Crafting Partnerships: Exploring Student-Led Feminist Strategies for Community Literacy Projects

    Relationships have served as a cornerstone to feminist research in community-based research and service learning sites, as feminist scholars have argued for co-constructing knowledges in these sites, while being attentive to the reciprocal nature of these relationships within any context of and for learning (Bayer, Grossman, & Dubois, 2015; Parks & Goldblatt, 2000; Novek, 1999). These relationships are especially crucial when feminists attempt to create real and sustained partnerships through mentoring in their community-based literacy site (DuBois & Karcher, 2005). We stress the value of cultivating sustained relationships, as oftentimes discourses surrounding service learning exhibit a level of engagement that is not sustained and/or does not adequately expose the workings of power and privilege in a systematic way (Deans, 2002).     The Hubble constant inferred from 18 time-delay lenses

    We present a simultaneous analysis of 18 galaxy lenses with time delay measurements. For each lens we derive mass maps using pixelated simultaneous modeling with shared Hubble constant. We estimate the Hubble constant to be 66_{-4}^{+6} km/s/Mpc (for a flat Universe with \Omega_m=0.3, \Omega_\Lambda=0.7). We have also selected a subsample of five relatively isolated early type galaxies and by simultaneous modeling with an additional constraint on isothermality of their mass profiles we get H_0=76 +/-3 km/s/Mpc.Comment: 11 page, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap

    Higher resources decrease fluctuating selection during host-parasite coevolution

Here, we investigated both theoretically and empirically how nutrient availability affects the relative extent of escalation of resistance and infectivity (arms race dynamic; ARD) and fluctuating selection (fluctuating selection dynamic; FSD) in experimentally coevolving populations of bacteria and viruses. By comparing interactions between clones of bacteria and viruses both within- and between-time points, we show that increasing nutrient availability resulted in coevolution shifting from FSD, with fluctuations in average infectivity and resistance ranges over time, to ARD. Our model shows that range fluctuations with lower nutrient availability can be explained both by elevated costs of resistance (a direct effect of nutrient availability), and reduced benefits of resistance when population sizes of hosts and parasites are lower (an indirect effect). Nutrient availability can therefore predictably and generally affect qualitative coevolutionary dynamics by both direct and indirect (mediated through ecological feedbacks) effects on costs of resistance.This work was funded by NERC (UK).     Background Rejection in the DMTPC Dark Matter Search Using Charge Signals

    The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) collaboration is developing low-pressure gas TPC detectors for measuring WIMP-nucleon interactions. Optical readout with CCD cameras allows for the detection for the daily modulation in the direction of the dark matter wind, while several charge readout channels allow for the measurement of additional recoil properties. In this article, we show that the addition of the charge readout analysis to the CCD allows us too obtain a statistics-limited 90% C.L. upper limit on the e−e^- rejection factor of 5.6×10−65.6\times10^{-6} for recoils with energies between 40 and 200 keVee_{\mathrm{ee}}. In addition, requiring coincidence between charge signals and light in the CCD reduces CCD-specific backgrounds by more than two orders of magnitude.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures.
