"Assessing agglomeration economies in a spatial framework with endogenous regressors"

This paper is concerned with the influence of agglomeration economies on economic outcomes across British regions. The concentration of economic activity in one place can foster economic performance due to the reduction in transportation costs, the ready availability of customers and suppliers, and knowledge spillovers. However, the concentration of several types of intangible assets can boost productivity as well. Thus, using an interesting dataset which proxies regional productivity, we will assess the relative importance of agglomeration and other assets, controlling for endogeneity, spatial autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity at the same time. Our results suggest that agglomeration has a definite positive influence on productivity, although our estimates of its effect are dramatically reduced when spatial dependence and other hitherto omitted variables proxying intangible assets are controlled for.Agglomeration economies, intangible assets, endogeneity, spatial autocorrelation, spatial HAC estimation. La promoción de la resiliencia parental en familias con hijos con problemas de conducta

 In this article we make a review of the concept of resilience and its main implications for practice. We carried out an analysis of different intervention programs for parents with preadolescent and adolescent children to broaden our understanding about the practical implications of this concept. Given the absence of interventions based on promoting parental resilience, we present a program for the prevention and promotion of parental competencies to support positive parenting and promote in parents an improvement in their level of resilience and emotional well-being. The main objectives of this program are: the development of strategies to manage the adverse situations that arise in the daily life related to the task of educating children; to promote parental skills that enable families to effectively respond to children's behavioral problems, to facilitate good emotional management of behavior problems, and to be able to recover from the impact caused. The program follows an experiential methodology, families are active agents in the process of change, and is accompanied by a rigorous implementation and evaluation to analyze the changes that occur as the intervention progresses.En este artículo realizamos una revisión a cerca del concepto de resiliencia y sus principales implicaciones para la práctica. Con el objetivo de profundizar en las implicaciones prácticas de este concepto, se realiza un análisis de los distintos programas de intervención destinados a padres y madres que tienen hijos preadolescentes y adolescentes con problemas de conducta. Dada la ausencia de intervenciones basadas en promover la resiliencia parental, se presenta un programa destinado a la prevención y la promoción de competencias parentales para apoyar la parentalidad positiva y promover en los padres una mejora en su nivel de resiliencia y bienestar emocional. Entre sus objetivos están: desarrollar estrategias de afrontamiento para gestionar las situaciones adversas que se plantean en el día a día de cara a la tarea de educar a sus hijos/as; promover habilidades parentales que permitan a las familias actuar con eficacia ante los problemas de conducta de los hijos/as, facilitar una buena gestión emocional de los problemas de conducta y ser capaz de recuperarse del impacto que causan los mismos. El programa sigue una metodología experiencial, las familias son agentes activos en el proceso de cambio, y se acompaña de una implementación y una evaluación rigurosa para analizar los cambios que se van produciendo a medida que se avanza en la intervención

El siguiente artículo tiene como intención, traer a la arena del debate y del diálogo social, una cara más de los derechos sexuales y el libre desarrollo de la personalidad, el poliamor, matrimonio plural y sus variantes las cuales aún más que el matrimonio y las adopciones igualitarias no han sido del todo consideradas por los legisladores y el grueso de la población que sostiene esquemas de pensamiento tradicionales sobre minorías sexuales disidentes, la finalidad es cuestionar esa parte del imaginario social, que coloca a las personas cuando son mayoría en calidad de jueces o autoridades morales para decidir qué es lo que debe aceptarse en la sociedad, y que debe legislarse o atender dentro de las políticas públicas, en este imaginario, el proyecto de vida de las mentes disidentes siempre se ha visto vulnerado e invisibilizado o incluso satanizado cuando se manifiesta la alteridad socialmente mal vista, principalmente por las ideas de las incontables religiones que penetran transversalmente la vida y mente de las personas, el punto esencial es que cuando estas mentes llegan a ocupar cargos públicos donde se toman decisiones que afectaran a muchas personas, tienden a manifestar e imponer desde su proceder/poder político estas creencias e ideas

Evaluation of microRNA expression in patient bone marrow aspirate slides

<div><p>Like formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues, archived bone marrow aspirate slides are an abundant and untapped resource of biospecimens that could enable retrospective molecular studies of disease. Historically, RNA obtained from slides is limited in utility because of their low quality and highly fragmented nature. MicroRNAs are small (≈22 nt) non-coding RNA that regulate gene expression, and are speculated to preserve well in FFPE tissue. Here we investigate the use of archived bone marrow aspirate slides for miRNA expression analysis in paediatric leukaemia. After determining the optimal method of miRNA extraction, we used TaqMan qRT-PCR to identify reference miRNA for normalisation of other miRNA species. We found hsa-miR-16 and hsa-miR-26b to be the most stably expressed between lymphoblastoid cell lines, primary bone marrow aspirates and archived samples. We found the average fold change in expression of hsa-miR-26b and two miRNA reportedly dysregulated in leukaemia (hsa-miR-128a, hsa-miR-223) was <0.5 between matching archived slide and bone marrow aspirates. Differential expression of hsa-miR-128a and hsa-miR-223 was observed between leukaemic and non-leukaemic bone marrow from archived slides or flash frozen bone marrow. The demonstration that archived bone marrow aspirate slides can be utilized for miRNA expression studies offers tremendous potential for future investigations into the role miRNA play in the development and long term outcome of hematologic, as well as non-hematologic, diseases.</p> </div

Pronóstico académico de nuevo ingreso a Medicina en Facultad de Ciencias Médicas “General Calixto García”, 2015-2016

ResumenEl estudio del pronóstico de cualquier fenómeno es importante al brindar la predicción de la conducta de dicho fenómeno en una realidad determinada. El pronóstico académico de los estudiantes de nuevo ingreso en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas “General Calixto García”, advierte el comportamiento del rendimiento académico y del proceso docente educativo en el curso escolar; permitiendo distinguir estudiantes de éxito, en tránsito o con riesgo y favoreciendo en un futuro, la conducta, por parte de los profesores, de las problemáticas y las potencialidades identificadas. El objetivo de esta investigación es describir el pronóstico académico de los estudiantes de nuevo ingreso a la carrera de Medicina en el curso escolar 2015-2016, a partir de la integración de resultados encontrados mediante la aplicación del cuestionario de métodos de estudio, la técnica del Centro de Orientación y Atención Psicológica(COAP) y el inventario de problemas juveniles. Método: Es una investigación de tipo descriptiva, con un diseño no experimental, el tipo de diseño es transversal, con un enfoque cuantitativo. Resultados prevalece el pronóstico de tránsito en la población estudiada. Conclusiones: el desarrollo del curso académico 2015-2016 para los estudiantes de primer año de la carrera de Medicina será satisfactorio en la medida que se trabaje con las deficiencias identificadas y se aprovechen las potencialidades.Palabras claves: pronóstico académico, estudiantes de medicina, métodos de estudio, valores, cualidades de la personalidad. Abstract The study of the prognostic of any phenomenon is very important due to this offers a prediction of the phenomenon behavior in several conditions any time. The academic forecast of new students of the Medicine career describes the behavior of the academic performance and the educational process in the particular 2015-2016´s course. Allowing differentiate successful students, transit students or critical students in their first year of study and working with their potentialities or their problems. Objective: To describe the academic forecast of students that begin Medicine career in the school course, 2015-2016, through the integration of results gathered by the Questionnaire of Study Methods, the COAP's Technique and the Inventory of Youth Problems. Method:  It is a descriptive type investigation, with a non-experimental design; the design type is transversal with a quantitative approach. Results: The forecast that prevails in the studied population is of transit students. Transcriptional and Post-transcriptional Gene Regulation by Long Non-coding RNA.

Advances in genomics technology over recent years have led to the surprising discovery that the genome is far more pervasively transcribed than was previously appreciated. Much of the newly-discovered transcriptome appears to represent long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), a heterogeneous group of largely uncharacterised transcripts. Understanding the biological function of these molecules represents a major challenge and in this review we discuss some of the progress made to date. One major theme of lncRNA biology seems to be the existence of a network of interactions with microRNA (miRNA) pathways. lncRNA has been shown to act as both a source and an inhibitory regulator of miRNA. At the transcriptional level, a model is emerging whereby lncRNA bridges DNA and protein by binding to chromatin and serving as a scaffold for modifying protein complexes. Such a mechanism can bridge promoters to enhancers or enhancer-like non-coding genes by regulating chromatin looping, as well as conferring specificity on histone modifying complexes by directing them to specific loci

Estimating Trends of Population Decline in Long-Lived Marine Species in the Mediterranean Sea Based on Fishers' Perceptions

We conducted interviews of a representative sample of 106 retired fishers in Italy, Spain and Greece, asking specific questions about the trends they perceived in dolphin and shark abundances between 1940 and 1999 (in three 20 year periods) compared to the present abundance. The large marine fauna studied were not target species of the commercial fleet segment interviewed (trawl fishery). The fishers were asked to rank the perceived abundance in each period into qualitative ordinal classes based on two indicators: frequency of sightings and frequency of catches (incidental or intentional) of each taxonomic group. The statistical analysis of the survey results showed that both incidental catches and the sighting frequency of dolphins have decreased significantly over the 60+ years of the study period (except for in Greece due to the recent population increase). This shows that fishers' perceptions are in agreement with the declining population trends detected by scientists. Shark catches were also perceived to have diminished since the early 1940s for all species. Other long-lived Mediterranean marine fauna (monk seals, whales) were at very low levels in the second half of the 20th century and no quantitative data could be obtained. Our study supports the results obtained in the Mediterranean and other seas that show the rapid disappearance (over a few decades) of marine fauna. We show that appropriately designed questionnaires help provide a picture of animal abundance in the past through the valuable perceptions of fishers. This information can be used to complement scientific sources or in some cases be taken as the only information source for establishing population trends in the abundance of sensitive species
