Dynamics of the circumstellar gas in the Herbig Ae stars BF Orionis, SV Cephei, WW Vulpeculae and XY Persei
We present high resolution (lambda / Delta_lambda = 49000) echelle spectra of
the intermediate mass, pre-main sequence stars BF Ori, SV Cep, WW Wul and XY
Per. The spectra cover the range 3800-5900 angstroms and monitor the stars on
time scales of months and days. All spectra show a large number of Balmer and
metallic lines with variable blueshifted and redshifted absorption features
superimposed to the photospheric stellar spectra. Synthetic Kurucz models are
used to estimate rotational velocities, effective temperatures and gravities of
the stars. The best photospheric models are subtracted from each observed
spectrum to determine the variable absorption features due to the circumstellar
gas; those features are characterized in terms of their velocity, v, dispersion
velocity, Delta v, and residual absorption, R_max. The absorption components
detected in each spectrum can be grouped by their similar radial velocities and
are interpreted as the signature of the dynamical evolution of gaseous clumps
with, in most cases, solar-like chemical composition. This infalling and
outflowing gas has similar properties to the circumstellar gas observed in UX
Ori, emphasizing the need for detailed theoretical models, probably in the
framework of the magnetospheric accretion scenario, to understand the complex
environment in Herbig Ae (HAe) stars. WW Vul is unusual because, in addition to
infalling and outflowing gas with properties similar to those observed in the
other stars, it shows also transient absorption features in metallic lines with
no obvious counterparts in the hydrogen lines. This could, in principle,
suggest the presence of CS gas clouds with enhanced metallicity around WW Vul.
The existence of such a metal-rich gas component, however, needs to be

El Servicio de Urgencias del C.H.G.U.V. cuenta con una plantilla de 84 Enfermeros/as. Una
parte considerable de ellos es personal de nueva incorporación, de ahí que sea prioritaria la
elaboración de protocolos de actuación.
La administración de medicación intravenosa es sin duda una de las técnicas de mayor
aplicación en los pacientes que acuden a Urgencias, que en nuestro Hospital oscila entre
550-600 atenciones diarias.
Por ello nos planteamos, mediante la realización de reuniones de grupo, la elaboración del
presente trabajo con el objetivo de elaborar un manual informativo sobre la medicación más
habitual utilizada en nuestro Servicio de Urgencias; indicaciones, contraindicaciones,
diluciones, cuidados y recomendaciones sobre la administración que nos ayude a visionar la
practica en nuestro trabajo y la calidad del Servicio que prestamos a nuestros pacientes, y
sirva de consulta sobre todo al personal de nueva incorporación.The First aid service of the C.H.G.U.V. Nurse is provided with a staff of 84, a considerable
part of them is new staff, and therefore there is a priority of making of performance protocols.
The administration of intravenous medication is undoubtedly one of the most used
techniques in patients who come to the emergency room, which in our Hospital ranges
between 550-600 daily attentions. For this reason, we considered that carrying out group meetings in order to elaborate the
present essay. Our main objective is to prepare an informative guidebook about the most
common used medicines in our first aid service: indications, contraindications, dilutions, care,
and recommendations on the use. In this sense it will contribute to see the practice in our
work and the service quality that we give to our patients. And what is more, it will serve as a
reference particularly to the new [email protected]
The pre-main sequence binary HK Ori : Spectro-astrometry and EXPORT data
In this paper we present multi-epoch observations of the pre-main sequence
binary HK Ori. These data have been drawn from the EXPORT database and are
complemented by high quality spectro-astrometric data of the system. The
spectroscopic data appear to be very well represented by a combination of an A
dwarf star spectrum superposed on a (sub-)giant G-type spectrum. The radial
velocity of the system is consistent with previous determinations, and does not
reveal binary motion, as expected for a wide binary. The spectral, photometric
and polarimetric properties and variability of the system indicate that the
active object in the system is a T Tauri star with UX Ori characteristics. The
spectro-astrometry of HK Ori is sensitive down to milli-arcsecond scales and
confirms the speckle interferometric results from Leinert et al. The
spectro-astrometry allows with fair certainty the identification of the active
star within the binary, which we suggest to be a G-type T Tauri star based on

EXPORT: optical photometry and polarimetry of Vega-type and pre-main sequence stars
This paper presents optical UBVRI broadband photo-polarimetry of the EXPORT
sample obtained at the 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope. The database consists of
multi-epoch photo-polarimetry of 68 pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars.
An investigation of the polarization variability indicates that 22 objects are
variable at the 3sigma level in our data. All these objects are pre-main
sequence stars, consisting of both T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be objects while the
main sequence, Vega type and post-T Tauri type objects are not variable. The
polarization properties of the variable sources are mostly indicative of the
UXOR-type behaviour; the objects show highest polarization when the brightness
is at minimum. We add seven new objects to the class of UXOR variables (BH Cep,
VX Cas, DK Tau, HK Ori, LkHa 234, KK Oph and RY Ori). The main reason for their
discovery is the fact that our data-set is the largest in its kind, indicating
that many more young UXOR-type pre-main sequence stars remain to be discovered.
The set of Vega-like systems has been investigated for the presence of
intrinsic polarization. As they lack variability, this was done using indirect
methods, and apart from the known case of BD +31.643, the following stars were
found to be strong candidates to exhibit polarization due to the presence of
circumstellar disks: 51 Oph, BD +31.643C, HD 58647 and HD 233517.Comment: A&A accepte
Permafrost conditions in the Mediterranean region since the Last Glaciation.
Cold-climate geomorphological processes today in the Mediterranean region are only distributed in the highest mountain environments. However, climate condition prevailing during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene have conditioned significant spatio-temporal variations of the glacial and periglacial domain in these mountains, including permafrost. In this communication we examine permafrost condition in the Mediterranean region taking into account five periods: Last Glaciation, deglaciation, Holocene, Little Ice Age (LIA) and present-day. The distribution of currently inactive permafrost-derived landforms and sedimentary records indicates that the permafrost elevation during the Last Glaciation was ca. 1000 m lower than present. Permafrost was also widespread in non-glaciated slopes above the snowline forming rock glaciers and block streams, as well as in relatively flat summit areas where meter-sized stone circles developed. As in most areas of the Northern Hemisphere, the deglaciation in the Mediterranean region started ca. 19-20 ka. The exposed terrain by retreating glaciers was affected by paraglacial dynamics and intense periglacial processes, mostly associated with permafrost condition. Many rock glaciers, protalus lobes and block streams formed in these recently deglaciated environments, becoming gradually inactive as temperatures rose during the Bølling-Allerød. Following the Younger Dryas glacial advance, the last massive deglaciation in Mediterranean mountains took place during the Early Holocene together with a progressive shift of the periglacial belt to higher elevations. It is unlikely that widespread permafrost have existed in Mediterranean mountains during the Holocene, except in the highest massifs exceeding 2500-3000 m. The colder climate prevailing during the LIA favoured a minor glacial advance and the spatial expansion of permafrost, with the development of new protalus lobes and rock glaciers in the highest massifs. Finally, the warming started during the second half of the 19th century has led to glacial retreat and/or complete melting, increased paraglacial activity, migration of periglacial processes to the highest lands and degradation of alpine permafrost along with geoecological changes
Can Jupiters be found by monitoring Galactic Bulge microlensing events from northern sites?
In 1998 the EXPORT team monitored microlensing event lightcurves using a CCD
camera on the IAC 0.8m telescope on Tenerife to evaluate the prospect of using
northern telescopes to find microlens anomalies that reveal planets orbiting
the lens stars. The high airmass and more limited time available for
observations of Galactic Bulge sources makes a northern site less favourable
for microlensing planet searches. However, there are potentially a large number
of northern 1m class telescopes that could devote a few hours per night to
monitor ongoing microlensing events. Our IAC observations indicate that
accuracies sufficient to detect planets can be achieved despite the higher

Seasonal drought limits tree species across the Neotropics
Within the tropics, the species richness of tree communities is strongly and positively associated with precipitation. Previous research has suggested that this macroecological pattern is driven by the negative effect of water-stress on the physiological processes of most tree species. This process implies that the range limits of taxa are defined by their ability to occur under dry conditions, and thus in terms of species distributions it predicts a nested pattern of taxa distribution from wet to dry areas. However, this ‘dry-tolerance’ hypothesis has yet to be adequately tested at large spatial and taxonomic scales. Here, using a dataset of 531 inventory plots of closed canopy forest distributed across the Western Neotropics we investigated how precipitation, evaluated both as mean annual precipitation and as the maximum climatological water deficit, influences the distribution of tropical tree species, genera and families. We find that the distributions of tree taxa are indeed nested along precipitation gradients in the western Neotropics. Taxa tolerant to seasonal drought are disproportionally widespread across the precipitation gradient, with most reaching even the wettest climates sampled; however, most taxa analysed are restricted to wet areas. Our results suggest that the ‘dry tolerance’ hypothesis has broad applicability in the world's most species-rich forests. In addition, the large number of species restricted to wetter conditions strongly indicates that an increased frequency of drought could severely threaten biodiversity in this region. Overall, this study establishes a baseline for exploring how tropical forest tree composition may change in response to current and future environmental changes in this region
Phylogenetic diversity of Amazonian tree communities
Aim: To examine variation in the phylogenetic diversity (PD) of tree communities across geographical and environmental gradients in Amazonia. Location: Two hundred and eighty-three c. 1 ha forest inventory plots from across Amazonia. Methods: We evaluated PD as the total phylogenetic branch length across species in each plot (PDss), the mean pairwise phylogenetic distance between species (MPD), the mean nearest taxon distance (MNTD) and their equivalents standardized for species richness (ses.PDss, ses.MPD, ses.MNTD). We compared PD of tree communities growing (1) on substrates of varying geological age; and (2) in environments with varying ecophysiological barriers to growth and survival. Results: PDss is strongly positively correlated with species richness (SR), whereas MNTD has a negative correlation. Communities on geologically young- and intermediate-aged substrates (western and central Amazonia respectively) have the highest SR, and therefore the highest PDss and the lowest MNTD. We find that the youngest and oldest substrates (the latter on the Brazilian and Guiana Shields) have the highest ses.PDss and ses.MNTD. MPD and ses.MPD are strongly correlated with how evenly taxa are distributed among the three principal angiosperm clades and are both highest in western Amazonia. Meanwhile, seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) and forests on white sands have low PD, as evaluated by any metric. Main conclusions: High ses.PDss and ses.MNTD reflect greater lineage diversity in communities. We suggest that high ses.PDss and ses.MNTD in western Amazonia results from its favourable, easy-to-colonize environment, whereas high values in the Brazilian and Guianan Shields may be due to accumulation of lineages over a longer period of time. White-sand forests and SDTF are dominated by close relatives from fewer lineages, perhaps reflecting ecophysiological barriers that are difficult to surmount evolutionarily. Because MPD and ses.MPD do not reflect lineage diversity per se, we suggest that PDss, ses.PDss and ses.MNTD may be the most useful diversity metrics for setting large-scale conservation priorities
