Hubiese sido muy agradable presentarles un tema encantador, por ejemplo hablar de la universidad, diciendo que esta maravillosa institución habría superado todos sus problemasde orientación y de funcionamiento.Si era el caso, no necesitaríamos mucho tiempo y pasaremos pronto a las conclusiones y a otras actividades más divertidas. Pero, viniendo como ustedes del mundo universitario, me veo obligado de constatar que la institución que nos interesa, encuentra hoy día numerosas turbulencias. How β-Lactam Antibiotics Enter Bacteria: A Dialogue with the Porins

BACKGROUND:Multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections have become a major concern in hospitals worldwide. This study investigates membrane translocation, which is the first step required for drug action on internal bacterial targets. beta-lactams, a major antibiotic class, use porins to pass through the outer membrane barrier of Gram-negative bacteria. Clinical reports have linked the MDR phenotype to altered membrane permeability including porin modification and efflux pump expression. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here influx of beta-lactams through the major Enterobacter aerogenes porin Omp36 is characterized. Conductance measurements through a single Omp36 trimer reconstituted into a planar lipid bilayer allowed us to count the passage of single beta-lactam molecules. Statistical analysis of each transport event yielded the kinetic parameters of antibiotic travel through Omp36 and distinguishable translocation properties of beta-lactams were quantified for ertapenem and cefepime. Expression of Omp36 in an otherwise porin-null bacterial strain is shown to confer increases in the killing rate of these antibiotics and in the corresponding bacterial susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We propose the idea of a molecular "passport" that allows rapid transport of substrates through porins. Deciphering antibiotic translocation provides new insights for the design of novel drugs that may be highly effective at passing through the porin constriction zone. Such data may hold the key for the next generation of antibiotics capable of rapid intracellular accumulation to circumvent the further development MDR infections

Graphene Schottky diodes: an experimental review of the rectifying graphene/semiconductor heterojunction

In the past decade graphene has been one of the most studied material for several unique and excellent properties. Due to its two dimensional nature, physical and chemical properties and ease of manipulation, graphene offers the possibility of integration with the exiting semiconductor technology for next-generation electronic and sensing devices. In this context, the understanding of the graphene/semiconductor interface is of great importance since it can constitute a versatile standalone device as well as the building-block of more advanced electronic systems. Since graphene was brought to the attention of the scientific community in 2004, the device research has been focused on the more complex graphene transistors, while the graphene/semiconductor junction, despite its importance, has started to be the subject of systematic investigation only recently. As a result, a thorough understanding of the physics and the potentialities of this device is still missing. The studies of the past few years have demonstrated that graphene can form junctions with 3D or 2D semiconducting materials which have rectifying characteristics and behave as excellent Schottky diodes. The main novelty of these devices is the tunable Schottky barrier height, a feature which makes the graphene/semiconductor junction a great platform for the study of interface transport mechanisms as well as for applications in photo-detection, high-speed communications, solar cells, chemical and biological sensing, etc. In this paper, we review the state-of-the art of the research on graphene/semiconductor junctions, the attempts towards a modeling and the most promising applications.Comment: 85 pages. L' université aux risques de l’économie de la connaissance, ou quelles finalités pour l’université aujourd’hui ?

Le texte proposé dans ce numéro des Cahiers du Girsef est rédigé par Michel Molitor, sociologue et professeur émérite de l’Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain). Ce texte est une version retravaillée d’une leçon publique qu’il a donnée au Collège de Belgique le 8 novembre 2017. Intitulée L’université à travers les réformes et les transformations du monde de l’éducation et de la recherche ces dernières années, cette leçon, inscrite dans une perspective historique, proposait une réflexion sur les profondes transformations qu’a connues l’université et interrogeait ses finalités actuelles. Si les Cahiers du Girsef publient traditionnellement les travaux des membres du Girsef, le plus souvent sous la forme d’un work in progress, le texte proposé ici se rapproche davantage d’un essai. L’auteur retrace de façon documentée l’évolution qu’a connu le système universitaire belge francophone en l’inscrivant dans une perspective globale et historique. Michel Molitor livre également son point de vue à partir des transformations de l’université qu’il a vécues tout au long d’une carrière. Il nous invite dès lors à réfléchir sur ces finalités et à les expliciter. Il nous a semblé important de publier cette réflexion car elle soulève un ensemble d’interrogations qui sont au cœur des recherches menées par les membres du Girsef sur les systèmes éducatifs : le rôle attribué à l’éducation, sa globalisation, les réponses que l’éducation apporte aux injonctions toujours plus nombreuses qui lui sont adressées, les transformations organisationnelles des établissements, l’accueil qu’elle réserve aux apprenants, etc. Pour que le lecteur puisse situer le propos de l’auteur, ce texte introductif présentera tout d’abord le parcours institutionnel de Michel Molitor. Les sections suivantes s’attarderont des éléments contextuels de l’enseignement supérieur belge francophone et du processus de Bologne

All believers who ask themselves about their ties with the Christian community, the Church and the memory of the Gospel can make a double observation. On the one hand, Christianity is no longer a cultural reference shared by all. On the other hand, one can note a growing gap between the practices of the ecclesial government and the aspirations of modern culture. Is it not the return to the Gospel and a radical reassessment of behaviour which could give back to Christianity its original vigour? In our countries, could not the minority status of Christianity be the opportunity for a new formulation of the Christian message and a renewal of practices

N'est-ce pas le retour à l'Évangile et une révision radicale des comportements qui peuvent rendre sa vigueur originelle au christianisme ?
