Resummation of the hadronic tau decay width with the modified Borel transform method
A modified Borel transform of the Adler function is used to resum the
hadronic tau decay width ratio. In contrast to the ordinary Borel transform,
the integrand of the Borel integral is renormalization--scale invariant. We use
an ansatz which explicitly accounts for the structure of the leading infrared
renormalon. Further, we use judiciously chosen conformal transformations for
the Borel variable, in order to map sufficiently away from the origin the other
ultraviolet and infrared renormalon singularities. In addition, we apply Pade
approximants for the corresponding truncated perturbation series of the
modified Borel transform, in order to further accelerate the convergence.
Comparing the results with the presently available experimental data on the tau
hadronic decay width ratio, we obtain . These predictions
virtually agree with those of our previous resummations where we used ordinary
Borel transforms instead.Comment: 32 pages, 2 eps-figures, revtex; minor changes in the formulations; a

Modelación molecular y variación estructural de las integrasas de dos retrovirus humanos:HTLV-I y VIH-1 / Molecular modeling and structural variation of two human retrovirus integrases: HTLV-I and HIV-1
AbstractObjective: To analyze the molecular characteristics and amino acid sequence variations of HTLV-I and of HIV-1 integrases and their population variants.Materials adn methods: Data mining and analysis of integrase sequences and protein structure data bases by using appropriate software for modelling and search for polymorphic substitutions in HTLV-I and HIV-1 integrase amino acid sequences previously reported. Results: HTLV-I and HIV-1 integrases are proteins of 288 amino acid residues. Structural modeling of tertiary folding of HTLV-I integrase catalytic central domain’s, showed closed structural characteristic with those of HIV-1, ASV and RSV. From 103 full amino acid sequences of HIV-1 integrase, 53 substitutions located in 46 different codons were recorded. The more frequents correspond to N27G (32,1%), L101I (31,1%), A265V (30,1%) and T123A (27,0%). None of these frequent substitutions introduced changes in the folding of HIV-1 native integrase. Conclusion: The tridimensional structure of central catalytic domain would influence the integrase activity and its relationship with potentially inhibitory molecules. Those observed amino acid substitutions were neutral and do not alter the native protein structure. Our data confirm those previously published, and enable us to propose that IN is a new and promissory target for develop more effective antiviral therapies in the xxi century. Keywords: Retrovirus, Integrase, molecular modeling, protein structure, proteinpolymorphisms, antiviral resistance
Un/making difference through performance and mediation in contemporary Africa
This special issue of the Journal of African Cultural Studies grew out of a panel we organized
at the European Conference on African Studies in Lisbon in June 2013. Our starting point
was the observation of a massive revival of cultural and religious identities across the
African continent, stretching from post-apartheid South Africa to Islamist groups in
parts of West Africa. In the early twenty-first century, Africa appears to be witnessing a historical
moment characterized by a resurgence of a politics of difference that, regardless of
the heterogeneous forms in which it materializes, shares an uncanny ability to produce
and sustain identities based on a politics of difference

Renormalization scheme dependence and the problem of determination of alpha_s and the condensates from the semileptonic tau decays
The QCD corrections to the moments of the invariant mass distribution in the
semileptonic decays are considered. The effect of the renormalization
scheme dependence on the fitted values of alpha_s(m^2_tau) and the condensates
is discussed, using a simplified approach where the nonperturbative
contributions are approximated by the dimension six condensates. The fits in
the vector and the axial-vector channel are investigated in the next-to-leading
and the next-to-next-to-leading order. The next-to-next-to-leading order
results are found to be relatively stable with respect to change of the
renormalization scheme. A change from the MS-bar scheme to the minimal
sensitivity scheme results in the reduction of the extracted value of
alpha_s(m^2_tau) by 0.01.Comment: Some typographical errors have been corrected, including two small
misprints in table 1 and table 2 and one in Eq.15. 20 pages Latex, 5 figure
Fil: Pizarro, Cynthia Alejandra. Presbyopia:Effectiveness of correction strategies
Presbyopia is a global problem affecting over a billion people worldwide. The prevalence of unmanaged presbyopia is as high as 50% of those over 50 years of age in developing world populations due to a lack of awareness and accessibility to affordable treatment, and is even as high as 34% in developed countries. Definitions of presbyopia are inconsistent and varied, so we propose a redefinition that states “presbyopia occurs when the physiologically normal age-related reduction in the eye's focusing range reaches a point, when optimally corrected for distance vision, that the clarity of vision at near is insufficient to satisfy an individual's requirements”. Presbyopia is inevitable if one lives long enough, but intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors including cigarette smoking, pregnancy history, hyperopic or astigmatic refractive error, ultraviolet radiation, female sex (although accommodation is similar to males), hotter climates and some medical conditions such as diabetes can accelerate the onset of presbyopic symptoms. Whilst clinicians can ameliorate the symptoms of presbyopia with near vision spectacle correction, bifocal and progressive spectacle lenses, monovision, translating or multifocal contact lenses, monovision, extended depth of focus, multifocal (refractive, diffractive and asymmetric designs) or ‘accommodating’ intraocular lenses, corneal inlays, scleral expansion, laser refractive surgery (corneal monovision, corneal shrinkage, corneal multifocal profiles and lenticular softening), pharmacologic agents, and electro-stimulation of the ciliary muscle, none fully overcome presbyopia in all patients. While the restoration of natural accommodation or an equivalent remains elusive, guidance is gives on presbyopic correction evaluation techniques
