    The role of pedagogical tools in active learning: a case for sense-making

    Evidence from the research literature indicates that both audience response systems (ARS) and guided inquiry worksheets (GIW) can lead to greater student engagement, learning, and equity in the STEM classroom. We compare the use of these two tools in large enrollment STEM courses delivered in different contexts, one in biology and one in engineering. The instructors studied utilized each of the active learning tools differently. In the biology course, ARS questions were used mainly to check in with students and assess if they were correctly interpreting and understanding worksheet questions. The engineering course presented ARS questions that afforded students the opportunity to apply learned concepts to new scenarios towards improving students conceptual understanding. In the biology course, the GIWs were primarily used in stand-alone activities, and most of the information necessary for students to answer the questions was contained within the worksheet in a context that aligned with a disciplinary model. In the engineering course, the instructor intended for students to reference their lecture notes and rely on their conceptual knowledge of fundamental principles from the previous ARS class session in order to successfully answer the GIW questions. However, while their specific implementation structures and practices differed, both instructors used these tools to build towards the same basic disciplinary thinking and sense-making processes of conceptual reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and metacognitive thinking.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

    Review on nanoparticles and nanostructured materials: History, sources, toxicity and regulations

    Nanomaterials (NMs) have gained prominence in technological advancements due to their tunable physical, chemical and biological properties with enhanced performance over their bulk counterparts. NMs are categorized depending on their size, composition, shape, and origin. The ability to predict the unique properties of NMs increases the value of each classification. Due to increased growth of production of NMs and their industrial applications, issues relating to toxicity are inevitable. The aim of this review is to compare synthetic (engineered) and naturally occurring nanoparticles (NPs) and nanostructured materials (NSMs) to identify their nanoscale properties and to define the specific knowledge gaps related to the risk assessment of NPs and NSMs in the environment. The review presents an overview of the history and classifications of NMs and gives an overview of the various sources of NPs and NSMs, from natural to synthetic, and their toxic effects towards mammalian cells and tissue. Additionally, the types of toxic reactions associated with NPs and NSMs and the regulations implemented by different countries to reduce the associated risks are also discussed

    Observation of flat and weakly dispersing bands in a van der Waals semiconductor Nb3Br8 with breathing kagome lattice

    Niobium halides, Nb3X8 (X = Cl,Br,I), which are predicted two-dimensional magnets, have recently gotten attention due to their breathing kagome geometry. Here, we have studied the electronic structure of Nb3Br8 by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations. ARPES results depict the presence of multiple flat and weakly dispersing bands. These bands are well explained by the theoretical calculations, which show they have Nb d character indicating their origination from the Nb atoms forming the breathing kagome plane. This van der Waals material can be easily thinned down via mechanical exfoliation to the ultrathin limit and such ultrathin samples are stable as depicted from the time-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements at room temperature. These results demonstrate that Nb3Br8 is an excellent material not only for studying breathing kagome induced flat band physics and its connection with magnetism, but also for heterostructure fabrication for application purposes.Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, Supplemental Material include

    Increased HLA-G Expression in Term Placenta of Women with a History of Recurrent Miscarriage Despite Their Genetic Predisposition to Decreased HLA-G Levels

    Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-G is an immune modulating molecule that is present on fetal extravillous trophoblasts at the fetal-maternal interface. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 3 prime untranslated region (3′UTR) of the HLA-G gene can affect the level of HLA-G expression, which may be altered in women with recurrent miscarriages (RM). This case-control study included 23 women with a medical history of three or more consecutive miscarriages who delivered a child after uncomplicated pregnancy, and 46 controls with uncomplicated pregnancy. Genomic DNA was isolated to sequence the 3′UTR of HLA-G. Tissue from term placentas was processed to quantify the HLA-G protein and mRNA levels. The women with a history of RM had a lower frequency of the HLA-G 3′UTR 14-bp del/del genotype as compared to controls (Odds ratio (OR) 0.28; p = 0.039), which has previously been related to higher soluble HLA-G levels. Yet, HLA-G protein (OR 6.67; p = 0.006) and mRNA (OR 6.33; p = 0.010) expression was increased in term placentas of women with a history of RM as compared to controls. In conclusion, during a successful pregnancy, HLA-G expression is elevated in term placentas from women with a history of RM as compared to controls, despite a genetic predisposition that is associated with decreased HLA-G levels. These findings suggest that HLA-G upregulation could be a compensatory mechanism in the occurrence of RM to achieve an ongoing pregnancy
