The stability of the O(N) invariant fixed point in three dimensions
We study the stability of the O(N) fixed point in three dimensions under
perturbations of the cubic type. We address this problem in the three cases
by using finite size scaling techniques and high precision Monte
Carlo simulations. It is well know that there is a critical value
below which the O(N) fixed point is stable and above which the cubic fixed
point becomes the stable one. While we cannot exclude that , as recently
claimed by Kleinert and collaborators, our analysis strongly suggests that
coincides with 3.Comment: latex file of 18 pages plus three ps figure
Gamma-ray and radio tests of the e+e- excess from DM annihilations
PAMELA and ATIC recently reported an excess in e+e- cosmic rays. We show that
if it is due to Dark Matter annihilations, the associated gamma-ray flux and
the synchrotron emission produced by e+e- in the galactic magnetic field
violate HESS and radio observations of the galactic center and HESS
observations of dwarf Spheroidals, unless the DM density profile is

Partnership, ownership and control: the impact of corporate governance on employment relations
Prevailing patterns of dispersed share ownership and rules of corporate governance for UK listed companies appear to constrain the ability of managers to make credible, long-term commitments to employees of the kind needed to foster effective labour-management partnerships. We present case study evidence which suggests that such partnerships can nevertheless emerge where product market conditions and the regulatory environment favour a stakeholder orientation. Proactive and mature partnerships may also be sustained where the board takes a strategic approach to mediating between the claims of different stakeholder groups, institutional investors are prepared to take a long-term view of their holdings, and strong and independent trade unions are in a position to facilitate organisational change
Model Independent Approach to Focus Point Supersymmetry: from Dark Matter to Collider Searches
The focus point region of supersymmetric models is compelling in that it
simultaneously features low fine-tuning, provides a decoupling solution to the
SUSY flavor and CP problems, suppresses proton decay rates and can accommodate
the WMAP measured cold dark matter (DM) relic density through a mixed
bino-higgsino dark matter particle. We present the focus point region in terms
of a weak scale parameterization, which allows for a relatively model
independent compilation of phenomenological constraints and prospects. We
present direct and indirect neutralino dark matter detection rates for two
different halo density profiles, and show that prospects for direct DM
detection and indirect detection via neutrino telescopes such as IceCube and
anti-deuteron searches by GAPS are especially promising. We also present LHC
reach prospects via gluino and squark cascade decay searches, and also via
clean trilepton signatures arising from chargino-neutralino production. Both
methods provide a reach out to m_{\tg}\sim 1.7 TeV. At a TeV-scale linear
e^+e^- collider (LC), the maximal reach is attained in the \tz_1\tz_2 or
\tz_1\tz_3 channels. In the DM allowed region of parameter space, a
\sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV LC has a reach which is comparable to that of the LHC.
However, the reach of a 1 TeV LC extends out to m_{\tg}\sim 3.5 TeV.Comment: 34 pages plus 36 eps figure
Near-field interactions between metal nanoparticle surface plasmons and molecular excitons in thin-films: part I: absorption
In this and the following paper (parts I and II, respectively), we systematically study the interactions between surface plasmons of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with excitons in thin-films of organic media. In an effort to exclusively probe near-field interactions, we utilize spherical Ag NPs in a size-regime where far-field light scattering is negligibly small compared to absorption. In part I, we discuss the effect of the presence of these Ag NPs on the absorption of the embedding medium by means of experiment, numerical simulations, and analytical calculations, all shown to be in good agreement. We observe absorption enhancement in the embedding medium due to the Ag NPs with a strong dependence on the medium permittivity, the spectral position relative to the surface plasmon resonance frequency, and the thickness of the organic layer. By introducing a low index spacer layer between the NPs and the organic medium, this absorption enhancement is experimentally confirmed to be a near field effect In part II, we probe the impact of the Ag NPs on the emission of organic molecules by time-resolved and steady-state photoluminescence measurements
N=1 domain wall solutions of massive type II supergravity as generalized geometries
We study N=1 domain wall solutions of type IIB supergravity compactified on a
Calabi-Yau manifold in the presence of RR and NS electric and magnetic fluxes.
We show that the dynamics of the scalar fields along the direction transverse
to the domain wall is described by gradient flow equations controlled by a
superpotential W. We then provide a geometrical interpretation of the gradient
flow equations in terms of the mirror symmetric compactification of type IIA.
They correspond to a set of generalized Hitchin flow equations of a manifold
with SU(3)xSU(3)structure which is fibered over the direction transverse to the
