    Spitzer-IRS high resolution spectroscopy of the 12\mu m Seyfert galaxies: I. First results

    The first high resolution Spitzer IRS 9-37um spectra of 29 Seyfert galaxies (about one quarter) of the 12um Active Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The high resolution spectroscopy was obtained with corresponding off-source observations. This allows excellent background subtraction, so that the continuum levels and strengths of weak emission lines are accurately measured. The result is several new combinations of emission line ratios, line/continuum and continuum/continuum ratios that turn out to be effective diagnostics of the strength of the AGN component in the IR emission of these galaxies. The line ratios [NeV]/[NeII], [OIV]/[NeII], already known, but also [NeIII]/[NeII] and [NeV]/[SiII] can all be effectively used to measure the dominance of the AGN. We extend the analysis, already done using the 6.2um PAH emission feature, to the equivalent width of the 11.25um PAH feature, which also anti-correlates with the dominance of the AGN. We measure that the 11.25um PAH feature has a constant ratio with the H_2 S(1) irrespective of Seyfert type, approximately 10 to 1. Using the ratio of accurate flux measurements at about 19um with the two spectrometer channels, having aperture areas differing by a factor 4, we measured the source extendness and correlated it with the emission line and PAH feature equivalent widths. The extendness of the source gives another measure of the AGN dominance and correlates both with the EWs of [NeII] and PAH emission. Using the rotational transitions of H2_2 we were able to estimate temperatures (200-300K) and masses (1-10 x 10^6 M_sun), or significant limits on them, for the warm molecular component in the galaxies observed.Comment: submitted to ApJ, Aug.2007, revised, in the refereeing proces

    A Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Survey of Nearby Active Glactic Nuclei

    We obtained 500-second F606W WFPC2 images of 256 of the nearest (z<0.035) Seyfert 1,Seyfert 2, and starburst galaxies. Less than 10% show tidal features or multiple nuclei. The incidence of inner starburst rings is about 10% in both classes of Sy galaxies. In contrast, galaxies with H II region emission line spectra appear substantially more irregular because of their much higher specific rates of star formation. An unresolved central continuum source in our HST images is a virtually perfect indicator of a Sy1 spectrum. 52% of these Sy1 point sources are saturated in our images; we use their wings to estimate their magnitudes. The converse is not however true, as over a third of Sy's with direct spectroscopic evidence for broad Balmer wings show no nuclear point source. Like the Sy2's, they have central surface brightnesses consistent with those expected for the bulges of normal galaxies. The frequency of bars in Sy1's and 2's and non-Sys are the same. The Sy2 galaxies are significantly more likely to show nuclear dust absorption, especially in lanes and patches which are irregular or reach close to the nucleus. The difference cannot be explained by different average redshifts or selection techniques. This is confirmed by our morphology classifications, which show that Sy1 nuclei reside in earlier type galaxies than Sy2 nuclei. This intrinsic difference in host galaxy properties may undermine the strong unification hypothesis for Sy galaxies that they appear different due to the orientation of their central engine. The excess galactic dust we see in Sy2's may cause substantial absorption which obscures their hypothesized broad emission-line regions and central nonstellar continua. This galactic dust could produce much of the absorption in Sy2 nuclei which had instead been attributed to a thick dusty accretion torus.Comment: The text of the paper is 23 pages (ms.tex), there are 8 tables, and 9 figures.     The far-infrared energy distributions of Seyfert and starburst galaxies in the Local Universe: ISO photometry of the 12 micron active galaxy sample

    New far-infrared photometry with ISOPHOT, onboard the Infrared Space Observatory, is presented for 58 galaxies with homogeneous published data for another 32 galaxies all belonging to the 12 micron galaxy sample. In total 29 Seyfert 1's, 35 Seyfert 2's and 12 starburst galaxies, about half of the 12 micron active galaxy sample, plus 14 normal galaxies for comparison. The ISO and the IRAS data are used to define color-color diagrams and spectral energy distributions (SED). Thermal dust emission at two temperatures (one cold at 15-30K and one warm at 50-70K) can fit the 60-200 micron SED, with a dust emissivity law proportional to the inverse square of the wavelength. Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's are indistinguishable longward of 100 micron, while, as already seen by IRAS, the former have flatter SEDs shortward of 60 micron. A mild anti-correlation is found between the [200 - 100] color and the "60 micron excess". We infer that this is due to the fact that galaxies with a strong starburst component, and thus a strong 60 micron flux, have a steeper far-infrared turnover. In non-Seyfert galaxies, increasing the luminosity corresponds to increasing the star formation rate, that enhances the 25 and 60 micron emission. This shifts the peak emission from around 150 micron in the most quiescent spirals to shorter than 60 micron in the strongest starburst galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal AASTeX preprint with 49 pages and 20 figures Also available at http://orion.ifsi.rm.cnr.it/publ.htm

    AGN Dusty Tori: I. Handling of Clumpy Media

    According to unified schemes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the central engine is surrounded by dusty, optically thick clouds in a toroidal structure. We have recently developed a formalism that for the first time takes proper account of the clumpy nature of the AGN torus. We now provide a detailed report of our findings in a two-paper series. Here we present our general formalism for radiative transfer in clumpy media and construct its building blocks for the AGN problem -- the source functions of individual dusty clouds heated by the AGN radiation field. We show that a fundamental difference from smooth density distributions is that in a clumpy medium, a large range of dust temperatures coexist at the same distance from the radiation central source. This distinct property explains the low dust temperatures found close to the nucleus of NGC1068 in 10 \mic interferometric observations. We find that irrespective of the overall geometry, a clumpy dust distribution shows only moderate variation in its spectral energy distribution, and the 10\mic\ absorption feature is never deep. Furthermore, the X-ray attenuating column density is widely scattered around the column density that characterizes the IR emission. All of these properties are characteristic of AGN observations.     Absorption-Line Probes of Gas and Dust in Galactic Superwinds

    We discuss moderate resolution spectra of the NaD absorption-line in a sample of 32 far-IR-bright starburst galaxies. In 18 cases, the line is produced primarily by interstellar gas, and in 12 of these it is blueshifted by over 100 km/s relative to the galaxy systemic velocity. The absorption-line profiles in these outflow sources span the range from near the galaxy systemic velocity to a maximum blueshift of 400 to 600 km/s. The outflows occur in galaxies systematically viewed more nearly face-on than the others. We therefore argue that the absorbing material consists of ambient interstellar gas accelerated along the minor axis of the galaxy by a hot starburst-driven superwind. The NaD lines are optically-thick, but indirect arguments imply total Hydrogen column densities of N_H = few X 10^{21} cm^{-2}. This implies that the superwind is expelling matter at a rate comparable to the star-formation rate. This outflowing material is very dusty: we find a strong correlation between the depth of the NaD profile and the line-of-sight reddening (E(B-V) = 0.3 to 1 over regions several-to-ten kpc in size). The estimated terminal velocities of superwinds inferred from these data and extant X-ray data are typically 400 to 800 km/s, are independent of the galaxy rotation speed, and are comparable to (substantially exceed) the escape velocities for LL_* (dwarf) galaxies. The resulting loss of metals can establish the mass-metallicity relation in spheroids, produce the observed metallicity in the ICM, and enrich a general IGM to 101^{-1} solar metallicity.     Beyond Simple AGN Unification with Chandra-observed 3CRR Sources at 0.5 &lt; z &lt; 1

    Low-frequency radio selection finds radio-bright galaxies regardless of the amount of obscuration by gas and dust. We report \chandra\ observations of a complete 178~MHz-selected, and so orientation unbiased, sample of 44 0.5<z<10.5<z<1 3CRR sources. The sample is comprised of quasars and narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRGs) with similar radio luminosities, and the radio structure serves as both an age and an orientation indicator. Consistent with Unification, intrinsic obscuration (measured by \nh, X-ray hardness ratio, and X-ray luminosity) generally increases with inclination. However, the sample includes a population not seen in high-zz 3CRR sources: NLRGs viewed at intermediate inclination angles with \nh~<1022<10^{22}~cm2^{-2}. Multiwavelength analysis suggests these objects have lower L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} than typical NLRGs at similar orientation. Thus both orientation and L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} are important, and a "radiation-regulated Unification" provides a better explanation of the sample's observed properties. In comparison with the 3CRR sample at 1<z<21<z<2, our lower-redshift sample shows a higher fraction of Compton-thin NLRGs (45\% vs.\ 29\%) but similar Compton-thick fraction (20\%), implying a larger covering factor of Compton-thin material at intermediate viewing angles and so a more "puffed-up" torus atmosphere. We posit that this is due to a range of L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} extending to lower values in this sample. In contrast, at high redshifts the narrower range and high L/LEddL/L_{\rm Edd} values allowed orientation (and so simple Unification) to dominate the sample's observed properties

    Development and Validation of a Risk Score for Chronic Kidney Disease in HIV Infection Using Prospective Cohort Data from the D:A:D Study

Development and implementation of a risk score model for CKD would allow comparison of the risks and benefits of adding potentially nephrotoxic antiretrovirals to a treatment regimen and would identify those at greatest risk of CKD. The aims of this study were to develop a simple, externally validated, and widely applicable long-term risk score model for CKD in HIV-positive individuals that can guide decision making in clinical practice. Methods and Findings A total of 17,954 HIV-positive individuals from the Data Collection on Adverse Events of Anti-HIV Drugs (D:A:D) study with >= 3 estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values after 1 January 2004 were included. Baseline was defined as the first eGFR > 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 after 1 January 2004; individuals with exposure to tenofovir, atazanavir, atazanavir/ritonavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, other boosted protease inhibitors before baseline were excluded. CKD was defined as confirmed (>3 mo apart) eGFR In the D:A:D study, 641 individuals developed CKD during 103,185 person-years of follow-up (PYFU; incidence 6.2/1,000 PYFU, 95% CI 5.7-6.7; median follow-up 6.1 y, range 0.3-9.1 y). Older age, intravenous drug use, hepatitis C coinfection, lower baseline eGFR, female gender, lower CD4 count nadir, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) predicted CKD. The adjusted incidence rate ratios of these nine categorical variables were scaled and summed to create the risk score. The median risk score at baseline was -2 (interquartile range -4 to 2). There was a 1: 393 chance of developing CKD in the next 5 y in the low risk group (risk score = 5, 505 events), respectively. Number needed to harm (NNTH) at 5 y when starting unboosted atazanavir or lopinavir/ritonavir among those with a low risk score was 1,702 (95% CI 1,166-3,367); NNTH was 202 (95% CI 159-278) and 21 (95% CI 19-23), respectively, for those with a medium and high risk score. NNTH was 739 (95% CI 506-1462), 88 (95% CI 69-121), and 9 (95% CI 8-10) for those with a low, medium, and high risk score, respectively, starting tenofovir, atazanavir/ritonavir, or another boosted protease inhibitor. The Royal Free Hospital Clinic Cohort included 2,548 individuals, of whom 94 individuals developed CKD (3.7%) during 18,376 PYFU (median follow-up 7.4 y, range 0.3-12.7 y). Of 2,013 individuals included from the SMART/ESPRIT control arms, 32 individuals developed CKD (1.6%) during 8,452 PYFU (median follow-up 4.1 y, range 0.6-8.1 y). External validation showed that the risk score predicted well in these cohorts. Limitations of this study included limited data on race and no information on proteinuria. Conclusions Both traditional and HIV-related risk factors were predictive of CKD. These factors were used to develop a risk score for CKD in HIV infection, externally validated, that has direct clinical relevance for patients and clinicians to weigh the benefits of certain antiretrovirals against the risk of CKD and to identify those at greatest risk of CKD.Peer reviewe

    IMPROVEMENT OF SACCADIC EYE MOVEMENTS AFTER HEAD-EYE VESTIBULAR MOTION (HEVM) THERAPY AND NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC CONSIDERATIONS

    Introduction: Eye movement pathology can assist in the identification, diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. Eyetracking paradigms have been utilized to provide greater ecological validity, and directly capture the detailed sequence of processes in perception and attention, while quantifying classifiers in mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. Saccadic eye movements serve as an endophenotype for various mental health disorders. Subjects and methods: Patients suffering from post-concussive syndrome and mental health concerns performed saccadic eye movements that were quantified for amplitude, velocity, latency and accuracy before and after Head-Eye Vestibular Motion therapy (HEVM). Results: HEVM therapy is associated with statistical and substantive significant improvements in mental health and in saccadic metrics. Conclusions: Oculomotor dysfunction is related to the symptom dimensions of mental health disorders that may be treated with physical rehabilitation modalities. We feel it reasonable to suggest that psychiatrists and others involved in the treatment of mental health disorders quantify eye movements and use them as biomarkers in the evaluation of the outcomes of varied therapies

    Development of a clot-adhesive coating to improve the performance of thrombectomy devices

    BackgroundThe first-pass complete recanalization by mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for the treatment of stroke remains limited due to the poor integration of the clot within current devices. Aspiration can help retrieval of the main clot but fails to prevent secondary embolism in the distal arterial territory. The dense meshes of extracellular DNA, recently described in stroke-related clots, might serve as an anchoring platform for MT devices. We aimed to evaluate the potential of a DNA-reacting surface to aid the retention of both the main clot and small fragments within the thrombectomy device to improve the potential of MT procedures. MethodsDevice-suitable alloy samples were coated with 15 different compounds and put in contact with extracellular DNA or with human peripheral whole blood, to compare their binding to DNA versus blood elements in vitro. Clinical-grade MT devices were coated with two selected compounds and evaluated in functional bench tests to study clot retrieval efficacy and quantify distal emboli using an M1 occlusion model. ResultsBinding properties of samples coated with all compounds were increased for DNA (approximate to 3-fold) and decreased (approximate to 5-fold) for blood elements, as compared with the bare alloy samples in vitro. Functional testing showed that surface modification with DNA-binding compounds improved clot retrieval and significantly reduced distal emboli during experimental MT of large vessel occlusion in a three-dimensional model. ConclusionOur results suggest that clot retrieval devices coated with DNA-binding compounds can considerably improve the outcome of the MT procedures in stroke patients
