Frequency and properties of bars in cluster and field galaxies at intermediate redshifts
We present a study of large-scale bars in field and cluster environments out
to redshifts of ~0.8 using a final sample of 945 moderately inclined disk
galaxies drawn from the EDisCS project. We characterize bars and their host
galaxies and look for relations between the presence of a bar and the
properties of the underlying disk. We investigate whether the fraction and
properties of bars in clusters are different from their counterparts in the
field. The total optical bar fraction in the redshift range z=0.4-0.8 (median
z=0.60), averaged over the entire sample, is 25% (20% for strong bars). For the
cluster and field subsamples, we measure bar fractions of 24% and 29%,
respectively. We find that bars in clusters are on average longer than in the
field and preferentially found close to the cluster center, where the bar
fraction is somewhat higher (~31%) than at larger distances (~18%). These
findings however rely on a relatively small subsample and might be affected by
small number statistics. In agreement with local studies, we find that
disk-dominated galaxies have a higher optical bar fraction (~45%) than
bulge-dominated galaxies (~15%). This result is based on Hubble types and
effective radii and does not change with redshift. The latter finding implies
that bar formation or dissolution is strongly connected to the emergence of the
morphological structure of a disk and is typically accompanied by a transition

Absorption of the and Mesons in Nuclei
Due to their long lifetimes, the and mesons are the ideal
candidates for the study of possible modifications of the in-medium
meson-nucleon interaction through their absorption inside the nucleus. During
the E01-112 experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility,
the mesons were photoproduced from H, C, Ti, Fe, and Pb targets. This
paper reports the first measurement of the ratio of nuclear transparencies for
the channel. The ratios indicate larger in-medium widths compared
with what have been reported in other reaction channels.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Differential cross sections and recoil polarizations for the reaction gamma p -> K+ Sigma0
High-statistics measurements of differential cross sections and recoil
polarizations for the reaction have been
obtained using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. We cover center-of-mass
energies () from 1.69 to 2.84 GeV, with an extensive coverage in the
production angle. Independent measurements were made using the
() and () final-state topologies,
and were found to exhibit good agreement. Our differential cross sections show
good agreement with earlier CLAS, SAPHIR and LEPS results, while offering
better statistical precision and a 300-MeV increase in coverage.
Above GeV, - and -channel Regge scaling behavior
can be seen at forward- and backward-angles, respectively. Our recoil
polarization () measurements represent a substantial increase in
kinematic coverage and enhanced precision over previous world data. At forward
angles we find that is of the same magnitude but opposite sign as
, in agreement with the static SU(6) quark model prediction of
. This expectation is violated in some mid- and
backward-angle kinematic regimes, where and are of
similar magnitudes but also have the same signs. In conjunction with several
other meson photoproduction results recently published by CLAS, the present
data will help constrain the partial wave analyses being performed to search

Unravelling the origins of S0 galaxies using maximum likelihood analysis of planetary nebulae kinematics
To investigate the origins of S0 galaxies, we present a new method of analysing their stellar kinematics from discrete tracers such as planetary nebulae. This method involves binning the data in the radial direction so as to extract the most general possible non-parametric kinematic profiles, and using a maximum-likelihood fit within each bin in order to make full use of the information in the discrete kinematic tracers. Both disc and spheroid kinematic components are fitted, with a two-dimensional decomposition of imaging data used to attribute to each tracer a probability of membership in the separate components. Likelihood clipping also allows us to identify objects whose properties are not consistent with the adopted model, rendering the technique robust against contaminants and able to identify additional kinematic features. The method is first tested on an N-body simulated galaxy to assess possible sources of systematic error associated with the structural and kinematic decomposition, which are found to be small. It is then applied to the S0 system NGC 1023, for which a planetary nebula catalogue has already been released and analysed by Noordermer et al. The correct inclusion of the spheroidal component allows us to show that, contrary to previous claims, the stellar kinematics of this galaxy are indistinguishable from those of a normal spiral galaxy, indicating that it may have evolved directly from such a system via gas stripping or secular evolution. The method also successfully identifies a population of outliers whose kinematics are different from those of the main galaxy; these objects can be identified with a stellar stream associated with the companion galaxy NGC 1023A
The ROSAT International X-ray/Optical Survey (RIXOS): source catalogue
We describe the ROSAT International X-ray/Optical Survey (RIXOS), a medium-sensitivity survey and optical identification of X-ray sources discovered in ROSAT high Galactic latitude fields (|b|>28°) and observed with the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) detector. The survey made use of the central 17 arcmin of each ROSAT field. A flux limit of 3×10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 (0.5–2 keV) was adopted for the survey, and a minimum exposure time of 8000 s was required for qualifying ROSAT observations. X-ray sources in the survey are therefore substantially above the detection threshold of each field used, and many contain enough counts to allow the X-ray spectral slope to be estimated.
Spectroscopic observations of potential counterparts were obtained of all sources down to the survey limit in 64 fields, totalling a sky area of 15.77 deg2. Positive optical identifications are made for 94 per cent of the 296 sources thus examined. A further 18 fields (4.44 deg2), containing 105 sources above the 3×10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 survey limit, are completely optically identified to a higher flux of 8×10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 (0.5–2 keV). Optical spectroscopic data are supplemented by deep CCD imaging of many sources to reveal the morphology of the optical counterparts, and objects too faint to register on Sky Survey plates. The faintest optical counterparts have R∼22.
This paper describes the survey method, and presents a catalogue of the RIXOS sources and their optical identifications. Finding charts based on Sky Survey data are given for each source, supplemented by CCD imaging where necessary
Measurement of the Nucleon Structure Function F2 in the Nuclear Medium and Evaluation of its Moments
We report on the measurement of inclusive electron scattering off a carbon
target performed with CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory. A combination of three
different beam energies 1.161, 2.261 and 4.461 GeV allowed us to reach an
invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W~2.4 GeV with four-momentum
transfers Q2 ranging from 0.2 to 5 GeV2. These data, together with previous
measurements of the inclusive electron scattering off proton and deuteron,
which cover a similar continuous two-dimensional region of Q2 and Bjorken
variable x, permit the study of nuclear modifications of the nucleon structure.
By using these, as well as other world data, we evaluated the F2 structure
function and its moments. Using an OPE-based twist expansion, we studied the
Q2-evolution of the moments, obtaining a separation of the leading-twist and
the total higher-twist terms. The carbon-to-deuteron ratio of the leading-twist
contributions to the F2 moments exhibits the well known EMC effect, compatible
with that discovered previously in x-space. The total higher-twist term in the
carbon nucleus appears, although with large systematic uncertainites, to be
smaller with respect to the deuteron case for n<7, suggesting partial parton
deconfinement in nuclear matter. We speculate that the spatial extension of the
nucleon is changed when it is immersed in the nuclear medium.Comment: 37 pages, 15 figure

The first one (carried out in GTC semesters 09B, 10A, and 13B; hereafter referred to as "centre position") targeted the Hα/[NII], Hα and [OIII] lines.
