Composite polymer membranes for laserinduced fluorescence thermometry
We demonstrate a modified version of laser-induced fluorescence thermometry (LIFT) for mapping temperature gradients in the vicinity of small photothermal devices. Our approach is based on temperature sensitive fluorescent membranes fabricated with rhodamine B and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Relevant membrane features for LIFT, such as temperature sensitivity, thermal quenching and photobleaching are presented for a range of 25 °C to 90 °C, and their performance is evaluated upon obtaining the temperature gradients produced in the proximity of optical fiber micro-heaters. Our results show that temperature measurements in regions as small as 750 μm x 650 μm, with a temperature resolution of 1 °C, can be readily obtained

We study the effect of new physics on the Z-decay into b anti-b pairs in the
framework of 331 models. The decay Z -> b anti-b is computed at one loop level
and, using previous results, we evaluate this branching fraction in the
framework of 331 models. A wide range of the space parameter of the model is
considered and possible deviations from the standard model predictions are
explored. From precision measurements at the Z-pole we find the allowed region

Identifying most important skills for PhD students in Food Science and Technology: a comparison between industry and academic stakeholders
Nowadays, there is an increasing need of new skills for PhD students to face the future labour market prospects. PhD graduates must have qualities attractive not only in academia but also outside, in both manufacture and service-oriented enterprises, in small innovative companies, and in the civil services and public administration, among others. To know what the needs of these future employees are, is of great importance to be able to improve their personal and academic formation. The aim of this work was, in the framework of the EC-funded ISEKI Food 4 network, to evaluate the most desirable specific and soft skills that PhD students should acquire by the end of their doctoral studies. To this aim, several surveys were conducted and sent to the different stakeholders (academia and food industry partners) in order to collect the information needed. Results showed that competences related to research skills and techniques, research management, personal effectiveness and communication skills were considered to be the most valuable skills to be acquired by our PhD students to meet the future needs of the labour market. The importance of these skills was appreciated differently, depending on the stakeholder. To sum up, some recommendations to integrate such valuable skills into the curricula of the PhD student are given
Effect of pharmaceutical intervention on medication adherence and blood pressure control in treated hypertensive patients: Rationale, design and methods of the AFenPA pilot study.
Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de una intervención farmacéutica protocolizada sobre el control de la presión arterial y la adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico en pacientes usuarios de farmacias comunitarias.Material y métodos: Estudio cuasi-experimental con grupo control en el que se comparará el efecto de una intervención farmacéutica (grupo intervención) con el proceso de atención habitual (grupo control), sobre la presión arterial y la adherencia al tratamiento de pacientes hipertensos tratados farmacológicamente en farmacias comunitarias. Los pacientes serán distribuidos de forma equitativa en ambos grupos (n control = n intervención) y serán seguido durante 6 meses. El programa de la intervención farmacéutica constará de tres partes fundamentales: 1) educación/información al paciente sobre aspectos relacionados con la hipertensión y adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico, 2) automonitorización de la presión arterial y, 3) interacción con el médico mediante informes personalizados cuando la media de las cifras de presión arterial realizadas en el domicilio superen el objetivo terapéutico acorde con la situación clínica del paciente. Para evaluar el efecto de la intervención farmacéutica sobre la adherencia terapéutica y la presión arterial se obtendrán medidas de presión arterial en la farmacia y porcentaje de cumplimiento terapéutico mediante recuento de comprimidos en ambos grupos al principio y al final del estudio.Discusión: Según nuestros conocimientos, éste es el primer estudio que se realiza en farmacia comunitaria en España para probar la efectividad de una intervención farmacéutica conjuntamente con la automedida de la presión arterial sobre el control de la presión arterial. Además, la intervención farmacéutica se ha diseñado de forma que pueda integrase como práctica habitual enmarcada dentro de la Atención Farmacéutica.Objective: To assess the effect of a protocol-based pharmacist intervention on blood pressure control and medication adherence among treated hypertensive patients who are users of community pharmacies.Methods: A quasi experimental study design with control group has been designed to compare the effect of pharmaceutical intervention (intervention group) versus the standard healthcare procedure (control group) on blood pressure and medication adherence among hypertensive patients receiving drug therapy in community pharmacies. The patients will be allocated evenly between the two groups (ncontrol = nintervention), with a 6-month follow-up. The pharmaceutical intervention program will comprise three main parts: 1) patient education / information on issues relating to hypertension and medication adherence; 2) self-monitoring of blood pressure; and 3) interaction with the physician through personalized reports when the mean blood pressure values recorded at home exceed the treatment goal according to the clinical condition of the patient. In order to evaluate the effect of the pharmaceutical intervention upon medication adherence and blood pressure, blood pressure recordings will be made in the pharmacy, while percent medication adherence will be established based on pill count in both groups at the start and end of the study.Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first study in the community pharmacy setting in Spain to evaluate the effectiveness of pharmaceutical intervention in combination with home blood pressure monitoring on blood pressure control. In addition, the pharmaceutical intervention has been designed for inclusion as standard practice in the context of Pharmaceutical Care
Continuous and Localized Mn Implantation of ZnO
We present results derived from continuous and localized 35 keV (55)Mn(+) ion implantations into ZnO. Localized implantations were carried out by using self-ordered alumina membranes as masks leading to ordered arrays of implanted volumes on the substrate surfaces. Defects and vacancies in the small implantation volumes of ZnO were generated due to the implantation processes besides the creation of new phases. Rapid thermal annealing was applied in the case of continuous implantation. The samples were characterized by HRSEM, GIXRD, Raman spectroscopy and RBS/C. Magnetic characterization of the samples pointed out appreciable differences among the samples obtained by the different implantation methods. This fact was mainly attributed to the different volume/surface ratios present in the implanted zones as well as to the increase of Mn atom concentrations along the grain frontiers in the nanostructured surfaces. The samples also showed a ferromagnetic transition phase at temperature value higher than room temperature
Invited review:Novel methods and perspectives for modulating the rumen microbiome through selective breeding as a means to improve complex traits: Implications for methane emissions in cattle
The rumen microbiome is responsible for methane emission in ruminants. The study of microbes in the rumen has attracted great interest in the last decade. High-throughput sequencing technologies have been key in expanding the knowledge of the microorganisms that populate the rumen through metagenomic studies. There is substantial evidence that the composition of the rumen microbiota is influenced by host genotype. Therefore, modulation of the microbiota poses an important tool for breeding for lower emissions in large and small ruminants. The main challenges of metagenomic studies are addressed and some solutions are proposed when available, including the incorporation of metagenomic information into statistical models regularly used in animal breeding. To incorporate microbiome information into breeding programs, the particularities of the rumen microbiome must be considered, from sampling to inclusion in selection indices.
