New physics in WWγWW\gamma at one loop via Majorana neutrinos

Current experimental data guarantees the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model in the neutrino sector. The responsible physical description might show itself through virtual effects on low-energy observables. In particular, massive neutrinos are able to produce contributions to the triple gauge coupling WWγWW\gamma. The present paper deals with the calculation, estimation and analysis of one-loop contributions from Majorana neutrinos to the Lorentz-covariant WWγWW\gamma parametrization. Our calculations show that CP-odd effects vanish exactly, whereas CP-even contributions, Δκ\Delta\kappa and ΔQ\Delta Q, remain. According to our estimations, the effects from heavy neutrinos with masses in the range of hundreds of GeVs dominate over those from light neutrinos. This investigation shows that contributions from heavy Majorana neutrinos to the anomaly Δκ\Delta\kappa could be as large as O(103)\sim{\cal O}(10^{-3}), one order of magnitude below the Standard-Model contribution. We find that the International Linear Collider, sensitive to triple gauge couplings participating in WWWW production, might measure these effects in electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 800GeV800\,{\rm GeV}, as long as heavy-neutrino masses are 300GeV\gtrsim300\,{\rm GeV} and below 1500GeV\sim1500\,{\rm GeV}.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

Electronics with shape actuation for minimally invasive spinal cord stimulation.

Spinal cord stimulation is one of the oldest and most established neuromodulation therapies. However, today, clinicians need to choose between bulky paddle-type devices, requiring invasive surgery under general anesthetic, and percutaneous lead-type devices, which can be implanted via simple needle puncture under local anesthetic but offer clinical drawbacks when compared with paddle devices. By applying photo- and soft lithography fabrication, we have developed a device that features thin, flexible electronics and integrated fluidic channels. This device can be rolled up into the shape of a standard percutaneous needle then implanted on the site of interest before being expanded in situ, unfurling into its paddle-type conformation. The device and implantation procedure have been validated in vitro and on human cadaver models. This device paves the way for shape-changing bioelectronic devices that offer a large footprint for sensing or stimulation but are implanted in patients percutaneously in a minimally invasive fashion

Planes of satellites around simulated disk galaxies I: finding high-quality planar configurations from positional information and their comparison to MW/M31 data

    Get PDF
We address the “plane of satellites problem” by studying planar configurations around two disk galaxies with no late major mergers, formed in zoom-in hydro-simulations. Due to the current lack of good-quality kinematic data for M31 satellites, we use only positional information. So far, positional analyses of simulations are unable to find planes as thin and populated as the observed ones. We follow a novel systematic and detailed plane searching technique to study the properties and quality of planes of satellites, in both simulations or real data. In particular, (i) we extend the four-galaxy-normal density plot method (Pawlowski et al. 2013) in a way designed to efficiently identify high-quality planes (i.e., thin and populated) without imposing extra constraints on their properties, and (ii), we apply it for the first time to simulations. Using zoom-in simulations allows us to mimic Milky Way/M31- like systems regarding the number of satellites involved as well as galactic disk effects. In both simulations, we find satellite planar configurations that are compatible, along given time intervals, with all of the spatial characteristics of observed planes identified using the same methodology. During most of these periods, planes are approximately perpendicular to the galactic disk. However, the fraction of co-orbiting satellites within them is, in general, low, suggesting time-varying satellite membership. We conclude that high-quality positional planes of satellites could be not infrequent in ΛCDM-formed disk galaxies with a quiet assembly history. Detecting kinematically coherent, time-persistent planes demands considering the full six-dimensional phase-space information of satellites

Recovering lost light: discovery of supernova remnants with integral field spectroscopy

We present results from a systematic search for broad (\geq 400 \kms) \ha\ emission in Integral Field Spectroscopy data cubes of \sim1200 nearby galaxies obtained with PMAS and MUSE. We found 19 unique regions that pass our quality cuts, four of which match the locations of previously discovered SNe: one Type IIP, and three Type IIn, including the well-known SN 2005ip. We suggest that these objects are young Supernova Remnants, with bright and broad \ha\ emission powered by the interaction between the SN ejecta and dense circumstellar material. The stellar ages measured at the location of these SNR candidates are systematically lower by about 0.5 dex than those measured at the location of core collapse SNe, implying that their progenitors might be shorter lived and therefore more massive than a typical CC SN progenitor. The methods laid out in this work open a new window into the study of nearby SNe with Integral Field Spectroscopy.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submitted to AAS journal

On the relationship between environment and galaxy properties in clusters of galaxies

We study the correlation between different properties of bright (L>L*) galaxies in clusters and the environment in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Samples of clusters of galaxies used in this paper are those selected by Coenda & Muriel that are drawn from the Popesso et al. and Koester et al. samples. Galaxies in these clusters have been identified in the Main Galaxy Sample of the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of SDSS. We analyse which galaxy properties correlate best with either, cluster mass or cluster-centric distance using the technique by Blanton et al. We find that galaxy properties do not clearly depend on cluster mass for clusters more massive than M~10^{14}M_sun. On the other hand, galaxy properties correlate with cluster-centric distance. The property most affected by the cluster-centric distance is g-r colour, closely followed by the u-r colour. These results are irrespective of the cluster selection criteria. The two samples of clusters were identified based on the X-ray emission and the galaxy colours, respectively. Moreover, the parameter that best predicts environment (i.e. cluster-centric distance) is the same found by Martinez & Muriel for groups of galaxies and Blanton at al. for the local density of field galaxies.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Accepted in MNRA

Extension of the equilibration period up to 24 h maintains the post-thawing quality of Holstein bull semen frozen with OPTIXcell®

[EN] Semen cryopreservation in bovine livestock is well established, but logistics often require deviations from standard protocols. Extending the equilibration time to the following day is convenient in many situations. To improve our knowledge of the effects of this modification, we studied the post-thawing and post-incubation (4 h, 38 °C) sperm quality after freezing with 4 or 24-h extension in the OPTIXcell extender by using an ample panel of analyses: CASA for motility; flow cytometry for viability, physiology, oxidative stress, and chromatin parameters (DNA fragmentation, chromatin compaction, and thiol groups status); and spectrometry for malondialdehyde production. Semen was obtained from 12 Holstein bulls. The 24-h equilibration time showed few significant effects, with only a tiny decrease in progressive motility and a positive impact on chromatin structure. The incubation removed some of these effects, with the pattern for chromatin compaction remaining the same. No detrimental oxidative stress or increase in apoptotic or capacitation markers was detected. Additionally, the individual bull interacted with the effects of the incubation and the equilibration, especially regarding the chromatin status. Whereas this interaction did not critically affect sperm quality, it could be relevant in practice. Bull fertility as non-return rates (NRR56) was associated with some sperm parameters (especially with an improved chromatin structure) but not in the 4-h post-thawing analysis. Our study supports that extending the equilibration time by at least 24-h is feasible for bull semen freezing with the OPTIXcell extender.S

Luminosity function of galaxies in groups in the SDSS DR7: the dependence on mass, environment and galaxy type

We perform an analysis of the luminosities of galaxies in groups in the SDSS DR7. We analyse the luminosity function (LF) as a function of group mass for different photometric bands, galaxy populations, galaxy positions within the groups, and the group surrounding large scale density. We find that M* brightens and alpha becomes steeper as a function of mass in all SDSS photometric bands, in agreement with previous results. From the analysis of different galaxy populations, we observe that different methods to split galaxy populations, based on the concentration index or the colour-magnitude diagram, produce quite different behaviours in the luminosity trends, mainly for alpha. These discrepancies and the trends with mass mentioned above are explained when analysing the LF of galaxies classified simultaneously according to their concentrations and colours. We find that only the red spheroids have a LF that strongly depends on group mass. Late type galaxies, whether blue or red, have luminosity functions that do not depend on group mass. The intrinsic change in the LF of spheroids and the varying number contributions of the different types explain all the observed trends with group mass. On the other hand, dividing the galaxy members in the inner and outer regions of the groups do not introduce a significant difference in the Schechter parameter trends, except for the characteristic absolute magnitude in the high group virial mass range (M>1x10^13 M_sun/h) which is an indication of luminosity segregation in massive groups. Finally, we also analyse the possible influence of the large scale surrounding environment on the LF. We find that galaxies inhabiting groups at low density regions experience more pronounced variations on the Schechter parameters as a function of groups mass, while galaxies in groups at high density regions show an almost constant behaviour.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, final version published in MNRA
