    Resumen: Tras el golpe de Estado que depuso al presidente Cáceres en 1895, la novelista Clorinda Matto, una de sus más significadas partidarias, se marchó del Perú. Después de una visita a Chile, se estableció definitivamente en Buenos Aires, donde levantó la revista Búcaro Americano. El artículo explora su largo y fructífero exilio, el periodo menos atendido de su biografía. En sus escritos, Clorinda  continuó con la defensa de la emancipación femenina, pero desde posiciones políticas más conservadoras. Poco antes de morir protagonizó un interesante viaje por Europa, donde entró en contacto con otras escritoras y conoció diversas realidades relativas al mundo de las mujeres. Palabras clave: Clorinda Matto, mujeres escritoras, feminismo, Perú, Chile, Argentina. Abstract: After the "coup d'état" that overthrew president Cáceres in 1895, the novelist Clorinda Matto, who was one of his most significant supporters, left Perú. After being to Chile, she definitively established herself in Buenos Aires. There, she founded the "Búcaro Americano" magazine. This article explores her long and productive exile, the least handled period of her biography. In her writings, Clorinda continued with her defense of feminine emancipation. Nonetheless, she did it from a more conservative political view. Little time before her death, she was involved in an interesting European tour, in which she contacted with other writers and knew about many realities related with women's world.Key words: Clorinda Matto, women writers, feminism, Perú, Chile, Argentina

    A functional variant of TLR10 modifies the activity of NFkB and may help predict a worse prognosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Background: Toll-like receptor (TLR) family members are key players in inflammation. TLR10 has been poorly studied in chronic inflammatory disorders, and its clinical relevance in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is as yet unknown. We aimed at identifying TLR10 variants within all coding regions of the gene in patients with RA as well as studying their functional and clinical significance. Methods: TLR10 gene variants were studied by performing sequencing of 66 patients with RA and 30 control subjects. A selected variant, I473T, was then analyzed in 1654 patients and 1702 healthy control subjects. The capacity of this TLR10 variant to modify the transcriptional activity of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFkB) was determined by using a luciferase reporter assay and analyzing the expression of NFkB target genes by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Differences between groups were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test and the unpaired two-tailed Student’s t test. Results: We detected ten missense variants in the TLR10 gene and focused on the I473T substitution based on allele frequencies and the predicted functional impact. I473T variant is not associated with susceptibility to RA, but it significantly correlates with erosive disease in patients seropositive for antibodies to citrullinated protein antigens (p = 0.017 in the total cohort and p = 0.0049 in female patients) and with a lower response to infliximab treatment as measured by the change in Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (p = 0.012) and by the European League Against Rheumatism criteria (p = 0.049). Functional studies showed that TLR10 reduced activation of the NFkB inflammatory pathway in hematopoietic cells, whereas the I473T variant lacked this inhibitory capacity. Consistently, after exposure to infliximab, cells expressing the I437T variant showed higher NFkB activity than cells carrying wild-type TLR10. Conclusions: A TLR10 allelic variant, I473T, has impaired NFkB inhibitory activity and is highly associated with disease severity and low response to infliximab in patients with RA

    Innate and adaptive immune assessment at admission to predict clinical outcome in covid-19 patients

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, many studies have been carried out to evaluate different immune system components to search for prognostic biomarkers of the disease. A broad multiparametric antibody panel of cellular and humoral components of the innate and the adaptative immune response in patients with active SARS-CoV-2 infection has been evaluated in this study. A total of 155 patients were studied at admission into our center and were categorized according to the requirement of oxygen therapy as mild or severe (the latter being those with the requirement). The patients with severe disease were older and had high ferritin, D-dimer, C-reactive protein, troponin, interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, and neutrophilia with lymphopenia at admission. Moreover, the patients with mild symptoms had significantly increased circulating non-classical monocytes, innate lymphoid cells, and regulatory NK cells. In contrast, severe patients had a low frequency of Th1 and regulatory T cells with increased activated and exhausted CD8 phenotype (CD8+CD38+HLADR+ and CD8+CD27-CD28-, respectively). The predictive model included age, ferritin, D-dimer, lymph counts, C4, CD8+CD27-CD28-, and non-classical monocytes in the logistic regression analysis. The model predicted severity with an area under the curve of 78%.     Seguimiento de la cubierta vegetal en la península ibérica a partir de sensores de nueva generación y su interrelación con variables climáticas

    Ponencia presentada en: XIII Congreso de la Asociación Española de Teledetección celebrado en Calatayud del 23 al 26 septiembre 2009.[ES]El objetivo principal del proyecto DULCINEA ha sido el desarrollo de una metodología multi-sensor para estimar parámetros biofísicos de la cubierta vegetal. La metodología desarrollada ha proporcionado estimaciones precisas de variables biofísicas de la vegetación (FVC, LAI) que han mostrado ser adecuadas para observar las variaciones inter- e intra-anuales de la cubierta en la Península Ibérica durante un periodo de 9 años (2000-2008). Los parámetros biofísicos obtenidos han permitido evaluar la vulnerabilidad de la vegetación ante condiciones ambientales extremas a nivel de la Península Ibérica. Un paso previo ha consistido en la elaboración de mapas detallados de parámetros climáticos y tipos de cubierta dominantes en la zona. Los modelos estadísticos aplicados han evidenciado una correlación significativa entre las variables biofísicas extraídas y algunas variables meteorológicas e índices de sequía operacionales. Esta interrelación es muy dependiente del tipo de cubierta y de las características climáticas de cada región. Se han encontrado correlaciones entre las anomalías de la cobertura vegetal y el SPI especialmente significativas para el caso de las regiones más secas, con valores típicos de R2 entre 0.4 y 0.7 durante los meses de Mayo y Junio.[EN]The main objective of the DULCINEA project is to provide coherent estimates of bio-physical variables such as fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and leaf area index (LAI) at regional to global scales. One of the goals of the project is to assess the potential of derived biophysical variables in the field of drought conditions monitoring. The aim was to analyse the vulnerability of natural ecosystems against the effects of climate fluctuations like drought and extreme events in the Iberian Peninsula, from the inter-correlation between the retrieved parameters and drought indices such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The climatic disturbances affected both the growing season and the total amount of vegetation.     From Cell to Symptoms: The Role of SARS-CoV-2 Cytopathic Effects in the Pathogenesis of COVID-19 and Long COVID

    Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection triggers var-ious events from the molecular to the tissue level, which in turn is given by the intrinsic character-istics of each patient. Given the molecular diversity characteristic of each cellular phenotype, the possible cytopathic, tissue, and clinical effects are difficult to predict, which determines the hetero-geneity of COVID-19 symptoms. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 on various cell types, focusing on the development of COVID-19, which in turn may lead, in some patients, to the persistence of symptoms after recovery from the disease, a condition known as long COVID. We describe the molecular mechanisms un-derlying virus–host interactions, including alterations in protein expression, intracellular signaling pathways, and immune responses. In particular, the article highlights the potential impact of these cytopathies on cellular function and clinical outcomes, such as immune dysregulation, neuropsy-chiatric disorders, and organ damage. The article concludes by discussing future directions for re-search and implications for the management and treatment of COVID-19 and long COVID
