    Post-embryonic organogenesis and plant regeneration from tissues: two sides of the same coin?

    Plants have extraordinary developmental plasticity as they continuously form organs during post-embryonic development. In addition they may regenerate organs upon in vitro hormonal induction. Advances in the field of plant regeneration show that the first steps of de novo organogenesis through in vitro culture in hormone containing media (via formation of a proliferating mass of cells or callus) require root post-embryonic developmental programs as well as regulators of auxin and cytokinin signaling pathways. We review how hormonal regulation is delivered during lateral root initiation and callus formation. Implications in reprograming, cell fate and pluripotency acquisition are discussed. Finally, we analyze the function of cell cycle regulators and connections with epigenetic regulation. Future work dissecting plant organogenesis driven by both endogenous and exogenous cues (upon hormonal induction) may reveal new paradigms of common regulation

    Analysis of Global Research on Malaria and Plasmodium vivax

    Background: Malaria is one of the infectious diseases of greatest interest to the scientific community and of greatest concern to international health authorities. Traditionally, the focus has been on Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes the most severe form of the disease in Africa. However, in the last twenty years, the Plasmodium vivax parasite, responsible for a large number of cases in Latin America, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, the Horn of Africa, and Oceania, has also generated enormous interest due, among other things, to the published evidence that it can cause severe malaria. Methods: In this paper, the international scientific publication on malaria and P. vivax has been analyzed using the Scopus database to try to define global trends in this field of study. Results: It has been shown that events such as the emergence of resistance to certain drugs can break a trend. The important role of non-malaria-endemic countries such as the USA or Switzerland in malaria research is also evident. Conclusions: International cooperation will be essential for the eradication of the disease. Moreover, in this sense, the general vision given by the bibliometric analysis of malaria caused by P. vivax is fundamental to paint the picture regarding the current situation and encourage international cooperation and control efforts

    Patterns of Sedentary Time and Quality of Life in Women With Fibromyalgia: Cross-Sectional Study From the al-Ándalus Project

    Background: Sedentary time (ST) has been associated with detrimental health outcomes in fibromyalgia. Previous evidence in the general population has shown that not only is the total amount of ST harmful but the pattern of accumulation of sedentary behaviors is also relevant to health, with prolonged unbroken periods (ie, bouts) being particularly harmful. Objective: To examine the association of the patterns of ST with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in women with fibromyalgia and to test whether these associations are independent of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Methods: A total of 407 women (mean 51.4 years of age [SD 7.6]) with fibromyalgia participated. ST and MVPA were measured with triaxial accelerometry. The percentage of ST accumulated in bouts and the frequency of sedentary bouts of different lengths (>= 10 min, >= 20 min, >= 30 min, and >= 60 min) were obtained. Four groups combining total ST and sedentary bout duration (>= 30 min) were created. We assessed HRQoL using the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Results: A greater percentage of ST spent in all bout lengths was associated with worsened physical function, bodily pain, vitality, social function, and physical component summary (PCS) (all P= 30 min and >= 60 min), physical role (>= 60 min), bodily pain (>= 60 min), and vitality (>= 20 min, >= 30 min, and >= 60 min) (all P<.05). Overall, for different domains of HRQoL, these associations were independent of MVPA for higher bout lengths. Patients with high total ST and high sedentary bout duration had significantly worsened physical function (mean difference 8.73 units, 95% CI 2.31-15.15; independent of MVPA), social function (mean difference 10.51 units, 95% CI 2.59-18.44; not independent of MVPA), and PCS (mean difference 2.71 units, 95% CI 0.36-5.06; not independent of MVPA) than those with low ST and low sedentary bout duration. Conclusions: Greater ST in prolonged periods of any length and a higher frequency of ST bouts, especially in longer bout durations, are associated with worsened HRQoL in women with fibromyalgia. These associations were generally independent of MVPA

    A lo largo de la Historia la resolución de ecuaciones no lineales ha preocupado a gran cantidad de científicos. Hoy en día, con los adelantos tecnológicos, estas ecuaciones son aproximadas de forma eficiente por medio de métodos iterativos. La idea es generar una sucesión de aproximaciones x0, x1, x2, ... que bajo ciertas condiciones converge a la raíz deseada. En este trabajo, presentamos una extensión a espacios de Banach de un método de tercer orden recientemente presentado en el caso escalar [6] M.A. Noor et al., An iterative method with cubic convergence for nonlinear equations, Appl. Math. Comp., 183, (2006), 1249-1255. Se introducirán varios teoremas de convergencia, modificaciones que no necesitan el cómputo de derivadas y varios experimentos numéricos

    Auxin and epigenetic regulation of SKP2B, an F-box that represses lateral root formation

    In plants, lateral roots originate from pericycle founder cells that are specified at regular intervals along the main root. Here, we show that Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) SKP2B (for S-Phase Kinase-Associated Protein2B), an F-box protein, negatively regulates cell cycle and lateral root formation as it represses meristematic and founder cell divisions. According to its function, SKP2B is expressed in founder cells, lateral root primordia and the root apical meristem. We identified a novel motif in the SKP2B promoter that is required for its specific root expression and auxin-dependent induction in the pericycle cells. Next to a transcriptional control by auxin, SKP2B expression is regulated by histone H3.1/H3.3 deposition in a CAF-dependent manner. The SKP2B promoter and the 59 end of the transcribed region are enriched in H3.3, which is associated with active chromatin states, over H3.1. Furthermore, the SKP2B promoter is also regulated by H3 acetylation in an auxin-and IAA14-dependent manner, reinforcing the idea that epigenetics represents an important regulatory mechanism during lateral root formation

Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is used to handle this situation. The principle of GBR is to use a membrane to prevent the colonization of soft tissue cells of the bone defect and favors the migration of osteogenic linages. Currentmembranes do not completely fulfill the requirements that an optimal membrane should have, sometimes resulting in non-predictable results. Thus, the need to develop an ideal membrane to perform this duty is clear. Recent developments in bio-manufacturing are driving innovations in membranes technology permitting the active participation of the membrane in the healing and regenerative process trough native tissue mimicking, drug-delivery and cells interaction, away from being a passive barrier. New membranes features need specific evaluation techniques, beyond the International Standard for membrane materials (last reviewed in 2004), being this the rationale for the present review.Nanotechnology application has completely shifted the way of analyzing structural characterization. New progresses on osteoimmmunomodulation have also switched the understanding of cells-membranes interaction. Data and Sources:To propose an updated protocol for GBR membranes evaluation, critical reading of therelevant published literature was carried out after a MEDLINE/PubMed database search. Conclusions:The main findings are that a potential active membrane should be assessed in its nanostructure, physicochemical and nanomechanical properties,bioactivityand antibacterial,osteoblasts proliferation, differentiation and mineralization.
