Shape descriptors and statistical classification on areal topography data for tile inspection in tessellated surfaces

    Get PDF
Verification of conformance to design specifications in production, and identification of defects related to wear or other damage during maintenance, are key metrological aspects that must be addressed for micro-scale tessellated surfaces. A new algorithmic approach is presented that operates on topography datasets as obtained by areal topography instruments. The approach combines segmentation algorithms with a novel implementation of the angular radial transform, originally adopted by the MPEG-7 standard, to implement shape descriptors and associated similarity metrics. Applications to the inspection and verification of laser-manufactured micro-embossing topographies are illustrated. The topographies are first segmented to extract the individual tiles; the tiles are then encoded through shape descriptors. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis are used to investigate the behaviour of the angular radial transform coefficients. Finally, an algorithmic classifier based on supervised learning (k-nearest neighbours) is implemented and shown to be effective at identifying defects and at discriminating between defect types

Study of weighted fusion methods for the measurement of surface geometry

    Get PDF
Four types of weighted fusion methods, including pixel-level, least-squares, parametrical and non-parametrical, have been classified and theoretically analysed in this study. In particular, the uncertainty propagation of the weighted least-squares fusion was analysed and its relation to the Kalman filter was studied. In cooperation with different fitting models, these four weighted fusion methods can be applied to a range of measurement challenges. The experimental results of this study show that the four weighted fusion methods compose a computationally efficient and reliable system for multi-sensor measurement problems, especially for freeform surface measurement. A comparison of weighted fusion with residual approximation-based fusion has also been conducted by providing the input datasets with different noise levels and sample sizes. The results demonstrated that weighted fusion and residual approximation-based fusion are complementary approaches applicable to most fusion scenarios

Alkynyliodonium Salt Mediated Alkynylation of Azlactones: Fast Access to Cα‑Tetrasubstituted α‑Amino Acid Derivatives

An efficient electrophilic alkynylation of azlactones (oxazol-5(4<i>H</i>)-ones) is developed using alkynyl(phenyl)iodonium salts as the electrophilic alkyne source. After remarkably short reaction times, the desired alkyne functionalized azlactones are obtained in 60–97% yield and can be transformed easily into a variety of quaternary α-amino acid derivatives

    Computed tomography for dimensional metrology

    No full text
The paper gives a survey of the upcoming use of X-ray computed tomography (CT) for dimensional quality control purposes: i.e. for traceable measurement of dimensions of technical (mechanical) components and for tolerance verification of such components. It describes the basic principles of CT metrology, putting emphasis on issues as accuracy, traceability to the unit of length (the meter) and measurement uncertainty. It provides a state of the art (anno 2011) and application examples, showing the aptitude of CT metrology to: (i) check internal dimensions that cannot be measured using traditional coordinate measuring machines and (ii) combine dimensional quality control with material quality control in one single quality inspection run

    Bulk forming of sheet metal

    No full text
Ever increasing demands on functional integration of high strength light weight products leads to the development of a new class of manufacturing processes. The application of bulk forming processes to sheet or plate semi-finished products, sometimes in combination with conventional sheet forming processes creates new products with the requested properties. The paper defines this new class of sheet-bulk metal forming processes, gives an overview of the existing processes belonging to this class, highlights the tooling aspects as well as the resulting product properties and presents a short summary of the relevant work that has been done towards modeling and simulation. © 2012 CIRP
