Estimating the Uncertainty in Population Projections by Resampling Methods
This paper proposes a new approach to introducing quantitatively measured uncertainty into population projections. It is to a lesser degree based on past time-series than other approaches, since it uses random walk models for migration, mortality and fertility, for which upper and lower bounds are defined. No parametric distribution is fitted to the observations, but the random walk is resampled from the past data. By putting bounds on the level that fertility can reach in the future, further substantive information is introduced that transcends the information derived from the observed time series. By sampling 10.000 path of the random walks in fertility, mortality and migration, the distributions of population size and structure up to 2050 for Austria, Mauritius and USA are estimated

Study of the effect of different hole sizes on mechanical strength of wafers for back contact solar cells
Drilling process on wafers to produce EWT or MWT solar cells is a critical fabrication step, which affects on their mechanical stability. The amount of damage introduced during drilling process depends on the density of holes, their size and the chemical process applied afterwards. To quantify the relation between size of the holes and reduction of mechanical strength, several sets of wafers have been prepared, with different hole diameter. The mechanical strength of these sets has been measured by the ring on ring bending test, and the stress state in the moment of failure has been deduced by FE simulation
Recent progress on the chiral unitary approach to meson meson and meson baryon interactions
We report on recent progress on the chiral unitary approach, analogous to the
effective range expansion in Quantum Mechanics, which is shown to have a much
larger convergence radius than ordinary chiral perturbation theory, allowing
one to reproduce data for meson meson interaction up to 1.2 GeV. Applications
to physical processes so far unsuited for a standard chiral perturbative
approach are presented. Results for the extension of these ideas to the meson
baryon sector are discussed, together with applications to kaons in a nuclear
medium and atoms.Comment: Contribution to the KEK Tanashi Symposium on Physics of Hadrons and

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD)
The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) completes the three layers of the
Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) to make an inner tracking system located inside
the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This additional fourth layer provides two
dimensional hit position and energy loss measurements for charged particles,
improving the extrapolation of TPC tracks through SVT hits. To match the high
multiplicity of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC the double sided silicon strip
technology was chosen which makes the SSD a half million channels detector.
Dedicated electronics have been designed for both readout and control. Also a
novel technique of bonding, the Tape Automated Bonding (TAB), was used to
fullfill the large number of bounds to be done. All aspects of the SSD are
shortly described here and test performances of produced detection modules as
well as simulated results on hit reconstruction are given.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
Antiflow of kaons in relativistic heavy ion collisions
We compare relativistic transport model calculations to recent data on the
sideward flow of neutral strange K^0_s mesons for Au+Au collisions at 6 AGeV. A
soft nuclear equation of state is found to describe very well the positive
proton flow data measured in the same experiment. In the absence of kaon
potential, the K^0 flow pattern is similar to that of protons. The kaon flow
becomes negative if a repulsive kaon potential determined from the impulse
approximation is introduced. However, this potential underestimates the data
which exhibits larger antiflow. An excellent agreement with the data is
obtained when a relativistic scalar-vector kaon potential, that has stronger
density dependence, is used. We further find that the transverse momentum
dependence of directed and elliptic flow is quite sensitive to the kaon
potential in dense matter.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex, 4 figure
Neutron star properties in the quark-meson coupling model
The effects of internal quark structure of baryons on the composition and
structure of neutron star matter with hyperons are investigated in the
quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. The QMC model is based on mean-field
description of nonoverlapping spherical bags bound by self-consistent exchange
of scalar and vector mesons. The predictions of this model are compared with
quantum hadrodynamic (QHD) model calibrated to reproduce identical nuclear
matter saturation properties. By employing a density dependent bag constant
through direct coupling to the scalar field, the QMC model is found to exhibit
identical properties as QHD near saturation density. Furthermore, this modified
QMC model provides well-behaved and continuous solutions at high densities
relevant to the core of neutron stars. Two additional strange mesons are
introduced which couple only to the strange quark in the QMC model and to the
hyperons in the QHD model. The constitution and structure of stars with
hyperons in the QMC and QHD models reveal interesting differences. This
suggests the importance of quark structure effects in the baryons at high
densities.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Physical Review
Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider
This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below. We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the ϒ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the ϒ(3S) and ϒ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to ϒ→e+e-X background. For data collected off the ϒ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs. The relative uncertainties on the luminosities of the on-resonance (off-resonance) samples are 0.43% (0.43%) for the ϒ(4S), 0.58% (0.72%) for the ϒ(3S), and 0.68% (0.88%) for the ϒ(2S).This work is supported by the US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (Canada), the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique and Institut National de Physique Nucléaire et de Physiquedes Particules (France), the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Germany), the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (Italy), the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (The Netherlands), the Research Council of Norway, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Spain), and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (United Kingdom). Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives ps.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
