    Get PDF
Starting from the famous and enigmatic quotation of the Aristotle’s Poetics, who argues that the human has a natural desire and pleasure to see corpses if mediated by art, is intended to show the relationship between the attraction for the horror and some contemporary art practices surrounding the depiction of death, particularly with regard to the ultimate use of the human corpse as an artistic resource. Avoiding any kind of ethical approach or questioning of the limits of the artistic production, is meant to highlight the phenomenon through the examples brought out by the work of some contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Eric Fischl, Damien Hirst, Von Hagens, Andres Serrano, Joel-Peter Witkin and Teresa Margolles: From those who use the corpse in and turn it in something aesthetically pleasant, to others who turn human corpses in sculptures of scientific value, and further other kind of artists who assume the morbid and dramatic life of the corpse in their art production as something structural.

Dissertation presented to obtain the Ph.D degree in BiochemistryOver the last thirty years, the tremendous biotechnological potential of nonaqueous biocatalysis has boosted research efforts in this area. Numerous studies have tried to elucidate how enzymes work in these nonconventional media and many properties are now well understood. However, when this thesis was initiated, some aspects of this field were poorly characterized at the molecular level. In particular, the molecular determinants of protein-ion interactions, enzyme stability, and molecular memory, are important issues which were lacking a thorough molecular analysis. These three subjects are herein investigated using molecular simulation methodologies.(...

Theoretical Analysis of a Potentiostat for Studying Microbial Fuel Cells

    Get PDF
For many years, Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) have been developed as alternatives for generating electricity via the oxidation of organic matter by bacteria. Even though individual MFC units are low in power, significant progress has been achieved in terms of MFC material and configurations, enabling them to generate higher output levels. Nonetheless, MFCs are are mainly produced using conventional laboratory methods that can take up to several months to bring the MFCs to their maximum power aptitudes. In this dissertation, an approach to use a low-cost potentiostat was developed in order to study MFCs comportament. Initially, the work focused on establishing an interface on Node-RED and an interconnection between the living cells in the MFC. In order to achieve that, was used a mbed NXP LPC1768 microcontroller to communicate with the interface created and also with the potentiostat. To fully explore the potentiostat, were studied several electrochemical tests possible to execute in the MFC reactor and the expected results. Finally, is possible to say that the potentiostat is fast, produces low noise and is a versatile instrument, very promising in the study of this emerging renewable energy like is MFCs.Há vários anos, que as Células de Combustível Microbianas têm sido desenvolvidas como alternativas para gerar eletricidade através da oxidação da matéria orgânica por bactérias.

Monitoring Architecture for Real Time Systems

    Get PDF
It can be hard to understand how an operating system - and software in general - reached a certain output just by looking at said output. A simple approach is to use loggers, or simple print statements on some specific critical areas, however that is an approach that does not scale very well in a consistent and manageable way. The purpose of this thesis is to propose and develop a tool - a Monitoring Tool - capable of capturing and recording the execution of a given application with minimal intrusion in the context of real-time embedded systems, namely using a space-qualified version of the RTEMS real-time operating system, and making that information available for further processing and analysis. Multicore environments are also considered. The current state of the art in monitoring and execution tracing is presented, featuring both a literature review and a discussion of existing tools and frameworks. Using an implementation of the proposed architecture, the tool was tested in both unicore and multicore configurations in both sparc and arm architectures, and was able to record execution data of a sample application, with varying degrees of verbosity.

UIDB/04666/2021 UIDP/04666/2021This paper aims to review the biography and work of Nise da Silveira, a Brazilian psychiatrist who carried out revolutionary work in the treatment of the mentally ill. This paper follows a qualitative methodology with a narrative and documentary base, highlighting the importance of her innovative action that rescued Occupational Therapy with artistic tools, in which free expression and affective contact are favored as an alternative to the conventional treatments of the time, such as electroshock and lobotomy. From a comparative perspective, Jung’s analytical psychology concepts such as myths, archetypes and the collective unconscious are related to Nise’s psychiatric therapeutic experience. The presentation of some patients case studies leads to the conclusion that the symbols and archetypes revealed in the artistic images created in occupational therapy have a structuring and healing impact, which is still followed today in various therapeutic contexts.publishersversionpublishe

Guido Crepax – Valentina – The Shape of Her Time

The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women
