Alpha lipoic acid efficacy in burning mouth syndrome: a controlled clinical trial
Background: A double-blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted in order to evaluate the efficacy of alpha
lipoic acid (ALA) and determine the statistical significance of the outcome variables. Burning mouth syndrome
(BMS) is defined as an oral burning sensation in the absence of clinical signs which could justify the syndrome.
Recent studies suggest the existence of neurological factors as a possible cause of the disease.
Material and Methods: 60 patients with BMS, in two groups: case group with 600 mg/day and placebo as control
group; with follow up of 2 months.
Results: 64% of ALA patients reported some level of improvement, with a level of maintenance of 68.75% one
month after treatment. 27.6% of the placebo group also demonstrated some reduction in BMS symptoms.
Conclusions: Long-term evolution and the intensity of symptoms are variables that reduce the probability of improvement with ALA treatmen

MAREJADAS RURALES Y LUCHA POR LA VIDA, VOL. I:CONSTRUCCIÓN SOCIOCULTURAL Y ECONÓMICA DEL CAMPO.
Association Between Preexisting Versus Newly Identified Atrial Fibrillation and Outcomes of Patients With Acute Pulmonary Embolism
Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) may exist before or occur early in the course of pulmonary embolism (PE). We determined the PE outcomes based on the presence and timing of AF. Methods and Results Using the data from a multicenter PE registry, we identified 3 groups: (1) those with preexisting AF, (2) patients with new AF within 2 days from acute PE (incident AF), and (3) patients without AF. We assessed the 90-day and 1-year risk of mortality and stroke in patients with AF, compared with those without AF (reference group). Among 16 497 patients with PE, 792 had preexisting AF. These patients had increased odds of 90-day all-cause (odds ratio [OR], 2.81; 95% CI, 2.33-3.38) and PE-related mortality (OR, 2.38; 95% CI, 1.37-4.14) and increased 1-year hazard for ischemic stroke (hazard ratio, 5.48; 95% CI, 3.10-9.69) compared with those without AF. After multivariable adjustment, preexisting AF was associated with significantly increased odds of all-cause mortality (OR, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.57-2.32) but not PE-related mortality (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 0.85-2.66). Among 16 497 patients with PE, 445 developed new incident AF within 2 days of acute PE. Incident AF was associated with increased odds of 90-day all-cause (OR, 2.28; 95% CI, 1.75-2.97) and PE-related (OR, 3.64; 95% CI, 2.01-6.59) mortality but not stroke. Findings were similar in multivariable analyses. Conclusions In patients with acute symptomatic PE, both preexisting AF and incident AF predict adverse clinical outcomes. The type of adverse outcomes may differ depending on the timing of AF onset.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Repensar els estudis catalans des de la teoria queer
Catalan Studies are basically focused on national/linguistic identity, but recent debate on Catalan identity triggered by the current pro-independent process in Catalonia, may help reshape this academic field. A more diverse approach to Catalan culture should consider sexuality, which has traditionally been banished from literary analysis as a ‘private’ matter. Here, we discussed how queer theory can reframe Catalan Studies mainly by building a specific LGBT literary tradition, identifying queer episodes and characters in the canon, questioning received meanings, promoting interdisciplinary analysis of Catalan culture and exploring the role of queer subjectivity in history

Ten millennia of hepatitis B virus evolution
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been infecting humans for millennia and remains a global health problem, but its past diversity and dispersal routes are largely unknown. We generated HBV genomic data from 137 Eurasians and Native Americans dated between ~10,500 and ~400 years ago. We date the most recent common ancestor of all HBV lineages to between ~20,000 and 12,000 years ago, with the virus present in European and South American hunter-gatherers during the early Holocene. After the European Neolithic transition, Mesolithic HBV strains were replaced by a lineage likely disseminated by early farmers that prevailed throughout western Eurasia for ~4000 years, declining around the end of the 2nd millennium BCE. The only remnant of this prehistoric HBV diversity is the rare genotype G, which appears to have reemerged during the HIV pandemic
Plasma Membrane-porating Domain in Poliovirus 2B Protein. A Short Peptide Mimics Viroporin Activity
Picornavirus 2B, a non-structural protein required for effective viral replication, has been implicated in cell membrane permeabilization during the late phases of infection. Here, we have approached the molecular mechanism of this process by assessing the pore-forming activity of an overlapping peptide library that spanned the complete 2B sequence. At non-cytopathic concentrations, only the P3 peptide, spanning 2B residues 35–55, effectively assembled hydrophilic pores that allowed diffusion of low molecular mass solutes across the cell plasma membrane (IC50 ≈ 4 × 10−7 M) and boundary liposome bilayers (starting at peptide to lipid molar ratios > 1:104). Circular dichroism data were consistent with its capacity to fold as a helix in a membrane-like environment. Furthermore, addition of this peptide to a sealed plasma-membrane model, consisting of retinal rod outer segments patch-clamped in a whole-cell configuration, induced ion channel activity within seconds at concentrations as low as 10−8 M. Thus, we have established a “one-helix” 2B version that possesses the intrinsic pore-forming activity required to directly and effectively permeabilize the cell plasma membrane. We conclude that 2B viroporin can be classified as a genuine pore-forming toxin of viral origin, which is produced intracellularly at certain times post infectionWe acknowledge the financial support of the DGICYT project numbers BFU2006-02182/BMC (to V.M. and L.C.) and BFU2005-06095/BMC (to S.S.M. and J.L.N.).
