Re-thinking historical consciousness in a pandemic : from commemoration to contestability

    No full text
The paper critiques the curriculum construction of historical consciousness within Australian school systems. National and trans-national discourses about identity, culture, gender, race and class influence the development of historical consciousness in Australian classrooms. During this unprecedented period of shared grief and global trauma, re-interpreting historical narratives that build children's concepts of social justice, equity and global inclusivity is important epistemological work for the future. This paper uses survey data and interviews from Australian school children and teachers as the COVID-19 pandemic emerged to examine what are the key narratives about Indigenous stories, resilience, adversity, global migration, and national identity, and how these narratives distort present realities. The analysis considers how historical consciousness is enacted within the current Australian school curriculum with stories from commemoration to contestability. Survey data from students from school years 6–12 is analysed in terms of how personal agency and empathy is formed through historical practices and inquiry in the classroom. This is supported by interviews about teaching practices. This paper reveals how globalized experiences can bridge historic boundaries of racism, prejudice and exclusion and how curriculum frameworks can develop critical historical consciousness for the future

Extraction of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene and cumene from soil using methanol at elevated temperature and pressure

A system for solvent extraction at elevated temperature and pressure has been constructed from parts of HPLC and GC instruments, The apparatus has been used successfully to remove benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, p-xylene and cumene from vapour-fortified clay soil, Quantitative recoveries (100 +/- 10%) were obtained for all analytes, provided the collection vial was cooled to around -3 degrees C in an ice-salt mixture, When the performance was compared with that of a commercial, accelerated solvent extraction system, similar levels of ethyl benzene, p-xylene and cumene were extracted, However, the recoveries and, in particular, the reproducibility were significantly better for benzene and toluene with the system developed

    The elite athlete´s mental recovery

To many people, resting physically is a matter of course, however, mental recovery is rarely talked about. Both are important and have major impact on performance and health. In this study, the aim is to investigate athletes experiences of mental recovery. In order to find out, we have conducted qualitative interviews. In what way the respondents receive recovery, how they are affected by the absence of mental recovery and if these athletes experience a connection between the absence of mental recovery and mental illness is presented in the results. When we analyzed the results of the interviews, we used content analyses. We concluded that all respondents receive recovery by thinking about other things than sport and by doing activities that are fun. In the absence of mental recovery, the majority experienced a deterioration in performance and a negative impact on health. The respondents described a link between mental illness and the absence of mental recovery. There is limited research in this area, but the results were consistent with previous research available today

DUNE Offline Computing Conceptual Design Report

    No full text
International audienceThis document describes Offline Software and Computing for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) experiment, in particular, the conceptual design of the offline computing needed to accomplish its physics goals. Our emphasis in this document is the development of the computing infrastructure needed to acquire, catalog, reconstruct, simulate and analyze the data from the DUNE experiment and its prototypes. In this effort, we concentrate on developing the tools and systems thatfacilitate the development and deployment of advanced algorithms. Rather than prescribing particular algorithms, our goal is to provide resources that are flexible and accessible enough to support creative software solutions as HEP computing evolves and to provide computing that achieves the physics goals of the DUNE experiment

The DUNE Far Detector Vertical Drift Technology, Technical Design Report

International audienceDUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also stand ready to observe supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with the sub-centimeter spatial resolution required to image those events with high precision. The addition of a photon detection system enhances physics capabilities for all DUNE physics drivers and opens prospects for further physics explorations. Given its size, the far detector will be implemented as a set of modules, with LArTPC designs that differ from one another as newer technologies arise. In the vertical drift LArTPC design, a horizontal cathode bisects the detector, creating two stacked drift volumes in which ionization charges drift towards anodes at either the top or bottom. The anodes are composed of perforated PCB layers with conductive strips, enabling reconstruction in 3D. Light-trap-style photon detection modules are placed both on the cryostat's side walls and on the central cathode where they are optically powered. This Technical Design Report describes in detail the technical implementations of each subsystem of this LArTPC that, together with the other far detector modules and the near detector, will enable DUNE to achieve its physics goals
