    Communication and marketing as tools to cultivate the public's health: a proposed "people and places" framework

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Communication and marketing are rapidly becoming recognized as core functions, or core competencies, in the field of public health. Although these disciplines have fostered considerable academic inquiry, a coherent sense of precisely how these disciplines can inform the practice of public health has been slower to emerge.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>In this article we propose a framework – based on contemporary ecological models of health – to explain how communication and marketing can be used to advance public health objectives. The framework identifies the attributes of people (as individuals, as social networks, and as communities or populations) and places that influence health behaviors and health. Communication, i.e., the provision of information, can be used in a variety of ways to foster beneficial change among both people (e.g., activating social support for smoking cessation among peers) and places (e.g., convincing city officials to ban smoking in public venues). Similarly, marketing, i.e., the development, distribution and promotion of products and services, can be used to foster beneficial change among both people (e.g., by making nicotine replacement therapy more accessible and affordable) and places (e.g., by providing city officials with model anti-tobacco legislation that can be adapted for use in their jurisdiction).</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>Public health agencies that use their communication and marketing resources effectively to support people in making healthful decisions and to foster health-promoting environments have considerable opportunity to advance the public's health, even within the constraints of their current resource base.</p

    A Journey into the City. Migrant Workers' Relation with the Urban Space and Struggle for Existence in Xu Zechen's Early Jingpiao Fiction

    In contemporary China, rural-urban migrants constitute a new urban subject with entirely new identity-related issues. This study aims at demonstrating how literature can be a valid field in investigating such evolving subjectivities, through an analysis of Xu Zechen’s early novellas depicting migrants’ vicissitudes in Beijing. Combining a close reading of the texts and a review of the main social problems characterising rural-urban migration in China, this paper focuses on the representation of the identity crisis within the migrant self in Xu’s stories, taking into account the network of meanings employed by the writer to signify the objective and subjective tension between the city and the countryside

    Following the “community” thread from sociology to information behavior and informatics: Uncovering theoretical continuities and research opportunities

    The authors review five paradigms from the discipline of community sociology (functionalism, evolution, conflict, interactionism, and exchange) to assess their potential utility for understanding everyday life information behavior and technology use. Their analysis considers the ways in which each paradigm defines the concepts of community, information, and technology. It also explores the insights offered by each paradigm regarding relationships between community and both information and technology. Accordingly, the authors highlight the ways in which existing information behavior and informatics scholarship draws from similar conceptual roots. Key insights drawn from this research, as well as remaining gaps and research questions, are examined. Additionally, they consider the limitations of each approach. The authors conclude by arguing for the value of a vigorous research program regarding information behavior and technology use in communities, particularly that which takes the community as the central unit of analysis.     Identification of Seven Additional Genome Segments of Grapevine-Associated Jivivirus 1

    Jiviruses are a group of recently described viruses characterized with a tripartite genome and having affinities with Virgaviridae (RNA1 and 2) and Flaviviridae (RNA3). Using a combination of high-throughput sequencing, datamining and RT-PCR approaches, we demonstrate here that in grapevine samples infected by grapevine-associated jivivirus 1 (GaJV-1) up to 7 additional molecules can be consistently detected with conserved 5′ and 3′ non-coding regions in common with the three previously identified GaJV-1 genomic RNAs. RNA4, RNA5, RNA6, RNA7, RNA8 and RNA10, together with a recombinant RNArec7-8, are all members of a family sharing a previously non recognized conserved protein domain, while RNA9 is part of a distinct family characterized by another conserved motif. Datamining of pecan (Carya illinoinensis) public transcriptomic data allowed the identification of two further jiviviruses and the identification of supplementary genomic RNAs with homologies to those of GaJV-1. Taken together, these results reshape our vision of the divided genome of jiviviruses and raise novel questions about the function(s) of the proteins encoded by jiviviruses supplementary RNAs

    PEGylated isoprenaline reveals distinct functions of cardiac β-adrenergic receptors located in the T-tubule vs . outer surface membrane

    Membrane proteins are present in both cardiac T-tubule (TTM) and outer surface membrane (OSM), although at a different density. Classical pharmacology does not allow to explore the function of a membrane protein separately in OSM vs. TTM. Here, we developed a technology based on size exclusion to explore the function of β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) located in the OSM. We synthetized a PEG-Iso molecule by covalent linking between isoprenaline (Iso) and a 5000 Da PolyEthylene-Glycol (PEG). Using confocal microscopy, we show that PEGylation constrains molecules outside the T-tubule network. PEG-Iso produced similar effects as Iso on I ca,L , sarcomere shortening and Ca 2+ transients. However, PEG-Iso increased [cAMP] i with a lower efficacy than Iso, produced a much lower stimulation of nuclear PKA activity than Iso but a larger stimulation of cytosolic PKA at equivalent levels of [cAMP] i . Our results show that activation of OSM β-ARs is sufficient to activate cytosolic PKA and excitation-contraction coupling, but insufficient to activate nuclear PKA or nuclear protein phosphorylation for which additional activation of TTM β-ARs is needed

    Fungal contamination of wind instruments: Immunological and clinical consequences for musicians

    International audienceINTRODUCTION:Playing a wind instrument is an increasingly reported cause of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. However, current knowledge about contamination of wind instruments by fungi and specific fungal sensitization is scarce. Therefore, we aimed: (i) to assess the current prevalence and type of fungal contamination of wind instruments, (ii) to identify potential risk factors associated with instrument contamination, and (iii) to evaluate the prevalence of sensitization to these fungi among musicians.MATERIAL AND METHODS:Musicians from music schools in eastern France and who played a wind instrument were prospectively recruited (NCT01487850). The mouthpiece and the reed of their instrument were sampled to quantify the magnitude and type of fungi. Each subject had a physical examination, a mycological analysis of saliva and a blood sample in search of serum precipitins against the most frequent fungi isolated from instruments. The results were compared with those of 40 healthy non-exposed controls.RESULTS:Forty musicians playing a wind instrument (bassoon, clarinet, oboe, saxophone) were included. (i) 95% of wind instruments were colonized by fungi, mainly with Phoma spp., Penicillium spp. and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa; (ii) absence of systematic drying of the instrument was a main contributing factor; (iii) serum precipitins were significantly more present in the musicians' sera than in control sera and were consistent with the fungi present in their instrument.CONCLUSION:This study reveals a constant and specific fungal contamination among wind reed instruments with a significant sensitization among musicians, pleading in favour of regular instrument cleaning. Physicians should be aware of this possible source of antigenic exposure

    Biocompatible and Photostable Photoacoustic Contrast Agents as Nanoparticles Based on Bodipy Scaffold and Polylactide Polymers: Synthesis, Formulation, and In Vivo Evaluation

    International audienceWe have designed a new Bodipy scaffold for efficient in vivo photoacoustic (PA) imaging of nanoparticles commonly used as drug nanovectors. The new dye has an optimized absorption band in the near-infrared window in biological tissue and a low fluorescence quantum yield that leads to a good photoacoustic generation efficiency. After Bodipy-initiated ring opening polymerization of lactide, the polylactide-Bodipy was formulated into PEGylated nanoparticles (NPs) by mixing with PLA-PEG at different concentrations. Formulated NPs around 100 nm exhibit excellent PA properties: absorption band at 760 nm and molar absorption coefficient in between molecular PA absorbers and gold NPs. Highly improved photostability-compared to cyanine-labelled PLA NPs as well as innocuity in cultured macrophages were demonstrated. After intravenous injection in healthy animals, NPs were easily detected using a commercial PA imaging system and spectral unmixing, opening the way to their use as theranostic agents
