Fluctuations of Quantum Radiation Pressure in Dissipative Fluid
Using the generalized Langevin equations involving the stress tensor
approach, we study the dynamics of a perfectly reflecting mirror which is
exposed to the electromagnetic radiation pressure by a laser beam in a fluid at
finite temperature. Based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the minimum
uncertainty of the mirror's position measurement from both quantum and thermal
noises effects including the photon counting error in the laser interferometer
is obtained in the small time limit as compared with the "standard quantum
limit".
The result of the large time behavior of fluctuations of the mirror's
velocity in a dissipative environment can be applied to the laser

Inflationary cosmology, a dissipative quantum field theory process
The current status of early universe cosmology can be summarized as
precision, but inherently limited, data requiring explanation from precision
and robust theory. Specifically inflation is presently the single concrete hope
for solving the early universe problem, since it is generically realizable in
quantum field theory, but treatment of interactions needs considerable

Extent of differential allelic expression of candidate breast cancer genes is similar in blood and breast.
INTRODUCTION: Normal gene expression variation is thought to play a central role in inter-individual variation and susceptibility to disease. Regulatory polymorphisms in cis-acting elements result in the unequal expression of alleles. Differential allelic expression (DAE) in heterozygote individuals could be used to develop a new approach to discover regulatory breast cancer susceptibility loci. As access to large numbers of fresh breast tissue to perform such studies is difficult, a suitable surrogate test tissue must be identified for future studies. METHODS: We measured differential allelic expression of 12 candidate genes possibly related to breast cancer susceptibility (BRCA1, BRCA2, C1qA, CCND3, EMSY, GPX1, GPX4, MLH3, MTHFR, NBS1, TP53 and TRXR2) in breast tissue (n = 40) and fresh blood (n = 170) of healthy individuals and EBV-transformed lymphoblastoid cells (n = 19). Differential allelic expression ratios were determined by Taqman assay. Ratio distributions were compared using t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test, for mean ratios and variances respectively. RESULTS: We show that differential allelic expression is common among these 12 candidate genes and is comparable between breast and blood (fresh and transformed lymphoblasts) in a significant proportion of them. We found that eight out of nine genes with DAE in breast and fresh blood were comparable, as were 10 out of 11 genes between breast and transformed lymphoblasts. Characterization of the rumen lipidome and microbiome of steers fed a diet supplemented with flax and echium oil
Developing novel strategies for improving the fatty acid composition of ruminant products relies upon increasing our understanding of rumen bacterial lipid metabolism. This study investigated whether flax or echium oil supplementation of steer diets could alter the rumen fatty acids and change the microbiome. Six Hereford × Friesian steers were offered grass silage/sugar beet pulp only (GS), or GS supplemented either with flax oil (GSF) or echium oil (GSE) at 3% kg(-1) silage dry matter in a 3 × 3 replicated Latin square design with 21-day periods with rumen samples taken on day 21 for the analyses of the fatty acids and microbiome. Flax oil supplementation of steer diets increased the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, but a substantial degree of rumen biohydrogenation was seen. Likewise, echium oil supplementation of steer diets resulted in increased intake of 18:4n-3, but this was substantially biohydrogenated within the rumen. Microbiome pyrosequences showed that 50% of the bacterial genera were core to all diets (found at least once under each dietary intervention), with 19.10%, 5.460% and 12.02% being unique to the rumen microbiota of steers fed GS, GSF and GSE respectively. Higher 16S rDNA sequence abundance of the genera Butyrivibrio, Howardella, Oribacterium, Pseudobutyrivibrio and Roseburia was seen post flax feeding. Higher 16S rDNA abundance of the genus Succinovibrio and Roseburia was seen post echium feeding. The role of these bacteria in biohydrogenation now requires further study
Accurate Atmospheric Parameters at Moderate Resolution Using Spectral Indices: Preliminary Application to the MARVELS Survey
Studies of Galactic chemical and dynamical evolution in the solar
neighborhood depend on the availability of precise atmospheric parameters
(Teff, [Fe/H] and log g) for solar-type stars. Many large-scale spectroscopic
surveys operate at low to moderate spectral resolution for efficiency in
observing large samples, which makes the stellar characterization difficult due
to the high degree of blending of spectral features. While most surveys use
spectral synthesis, in this work we employ an alternative method based on
spectral indices to determine the atmospheric parameters of a sample of nearby
FGK dwarfs and subgiants observed by the MARVELS survey at moderate resolving
power (R~12,000). We have developed three codes to automatically normalize the
observed spectra, measure the equivalent widths of the indices and, through the
comparison of those with values calculated with pre-determined calibrations,
derive the atmospheric parameters of the stars. The calibrations were built
using a sample of 309 stars with precise stellar parameters obtained from the
analysis of high-resolution FEROS spectra. A validation test of the method was
conducted with a sample of 30 MARVELS targets that also have reliable
atmospheric parameters from high-resolution spectroscopic analysis. Our
approach was able to recover the parameters within 80 K for Teff, 0.05 dex for
[Fe/H] and 0.15 dex for log g, values that are lower or equal to the typical
external uncertainties found between different high-resolution analyzes. An
additional test was performed with a subsample of 138 stars from the ELODIE
stellar library and the literature atmospheric parameters were recovered within
125 K for Teff, 0.10 dex for [Fe/H] and 0.29 dex for log g. These results show
that the spectral indices are a competitive tool to characterize stars with the

The Metallicity Distribution Functions of SEGUE G and K dwarfs: Constraints for Disk Chemical Evolution and Formation
We present the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for 24,270 G and
16,847 K dwarfs at distances from 0.2 to 2.3 kpc from the Galactic plane, based
on spectroscopy from the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and
Exploration (SEGUE) survey. This stellar sample is significantly larger in both
number and volume than previous spectroscopic analyses, which were limited to
the solar vicinity, making it ideal for comparison with local volume-limited
samples and Galactic models. For the first time, we have corrected the MDF for
the various observational biases introduced by the SEGUE target selection
strategy. The SEGUE sample is particularly notable for K dwarfs, which are too
faint to examine spectroscopically far from the solar neighborhood. The MDF of
both spectral types becomes more metal-poor with increasing |Z|, which reflects
the transition from a sample with small [alpha/Fe] values at small heights to
one with enhanced [alpha/Fe] above 1 kpc. Comparison of our SEGUE distributions
to those of two different Milky Way models reveals that both are more
metal-rich than our observed distributions at all heights above the plane. Our
unbiased observations of G and K dwarfs provide valuable constraints over the
|Z|-height range of the Milky Way disk for chemical and dynamical Galaxy
evolution models, previously only calibrated to the solar neighborhood, with

Postoperative Pain Management in DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction: Identification of Patients With Poor Pain Control
Objective: Adequate control of postoperative pain directly improves patient satisfaction and outcomes, and timely identification of patients with poorly controlled pain is essential. Pain management protocols are best studied in patients recovering from the same operation. In our institution, the postoperative pain regimen for patients undergoing deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction is standardized using patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) followed by conversion to oral narcotics. From this uniform population, we were able to identify a subgroup of patients with poor pain control. Methods: Over a 44-month period, 179 consecutive patients underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction with 242 flaps performed. A retrospective chart review recorded PCA usage, visual analog scale pain scores, and length of stay. Results: Pain management with PCA after DIEP flap breast reconstruction was uniformly controlled. Most patients (74.9%) required PCA usage in the first 2 days with conversion to oral analgesics. A subgroup of patients (25.1%) continued to require PCA usage on the third postoperative day. These “nonresponder” patients had a higher visual analog scale score on the first postoperative day, higher total intravenous morphine use, and a longer length of stay (all, P < .05). A multivariate analysis revealed more nonresponders among patients undergoing immediate breast reconstruction (P < .05); however, all other factors analyzed had no correlation. Conclusion: We report a subgroup of patients with poor pain control after DIEP flap breast reconstruction. This group of patients required a longer course of pain management and subsequently a longer hospital stay. Pain management protocols that identify these patients promptly can allow for appropriate modifications
Severe Chronic Active EBV Infection in an Adult Patient: Case Report
Severe chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is a rare and life-threatening illness. Although the criteria for diagnosis include chronic or recurrent infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms lasting more than 6 months and high titers of anti-EBV antibodies, clinical and laboratory findings may be heterogeneous and flexible application of those criteria is necessary in cases showing typical clinical and pathologic findings. We report a case of severe chronic active EBV infection in a 62-yr-old female patient who showed classical clinical findings with infiltration of EBV-infected T lymphocytes in the bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes, and died four months after presentation
