The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Data Characterization and Map Making
We present a description of the data reduction and mapmaking pipeline used
for the 2008 observing season of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The
data presented here at 148 GHz represent 12% of the 90 TB collected by ACT from
2007 to 2010. In 2008 we observed for 136 days, producing a total of 1423 hours
of data (11 TB for the 148 GHz band only), with a daily average of 10.5 hours
of observation. From these, 1085 hours were devoted to a 850 deg^2 stripe (11.2
hours by 9.1 deg) centered on a declination of -52.7 deg, while 175 hours were
devoted to a 280 deg^2 stripe (4.5 hours by 4.8 deg) centered at the celestial
equator. We discuss sources of statistical and systematic noise, calibration,
telescope pointing, and data selection. Out of 1260 survey hours and 1024
detectors per array, 816 hours and 593 effective detectors remain after data
selection for this frequency band, yielding a 38% survey efficiency. The total
sensitivity in 2008, determined from the noise level between 5 Hz and 20 Hz in
the time-ordered data stream (TOD), is 32 micro-Kelvin sqrt{s} in CMB units.
Atmospheric brightness fluctuations constitute the main contaminant in the data
and dominate the detector noise covariance at low frequencies in the TOD. The
maps were made by solving the least-squares problem using the Preconditioned
Conjugate Gradient method, incorporating the details of the detector and noise
correlations. Cross-correlation with WMAP sky maps, as well as analysis from
simulations, reveal that our maps are unbiased at multipoles ell > 300. This
paper accompanies the public release of the 148 GHz southern stripe maps from
2008. The techniques described here will be applied to future maps and data

Safety and efficacy of fluoxetine on functional outcome after acute stroke (AFFINITY): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Background
Trials of fluoxetine for recovery after stroke report conflicting results. The Assessment oF FluoxetINe In sTroke recoverY (AFFINITY) trial aimed to show if daily oral fluoxetine for 6 months after stroke improves functional outcome in an ethnically diverse population.
Methods
AFFINITY was a randomised, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial done in 43 hospital stroke units in Australia (n=29), New Zealand (four), and Vietnam (ten). Eligible patients were adults (aged â„18 years) with a clinical diagnosis of acute stroke in the previous 2â15 days, brain imaging consistent with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and a persisting neurological deficit that produced a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 1 or more. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 via a web-based system using a minimisation algorithm to once daily, oral fluoxetine 20 mg capsules or matching placebo for 6 months. Patients, carers, investigators, and outcome assessors were masked to the treatment allocation. The primary outcome was functional status, measured by the mRS, at 6 months. The primary analysis was an ordinal logistic regression of the mRS at 6 months, adjusted for minimisation variables. Primary and safety analyses were done according to the patient's treatment allocation. The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12611000774921.
Findings
Between Jan 11, 2013, and June 30, 2019, 1280 patients were recruited in Australia (n=532), New Zealand (n=42), and Vietnam (n=706), of whom 642 were randomly assigned to fluoxetine and 638 were randomly assigned to placebo. Mean duration of trial treatment was 167 days (SD 48·1). At 6 months, mRS data were available in 624 (97%) patients in the fluoxetine group and 632 (99%) in the placebo group. The distribution of mRS categories was similar in the fluoxetine and placebo groups (adjusted common odds ratio 0·94, 95% CI 0·76â1·15; p=0·53). Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients in the fluoxetine group had more falls (20 [3%] vs seven [1%]; p=0·018), bone fractures (19 [3%] vs six [1%]; p=0·014), and epileptic seizures (ten [2%] vs two [<1%]; p=0·038) at 6 months.
Interpretation
Oral fluoxetine 20 mg daily for 6 months after acute stroke did not improve functional outcome and increased the risk of falls, bone fractures, and epileptic seizures. These results do not support the use of fluoxetine to improve functional outcome after stroke
Mechanism of oxidative dehydrogenation of an amine coordinated to osmium(II)
The synthesis and characterization of [Os(bpy)â(ampy)]ÂČâș{bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; ampy = 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine} have been studied, together with its irreversible two-electron oxidative dehydrogenation to the corresponding osmium(II) imine species in aqueous solution, by utilizing electrochemical and stopped-flow kinetic techniques. The kinetic data were analysed by using numerical integration methods to obtain solutions for the differential equations derived from mechanistic proposals. The results were consistent with the initial oxidation of the metal centre to Os(III) and the intermediacy of a deprotonated Os(IV) species, formed by disproportionation, in the subsequent ligand dehydrogenation
EPR Characterisation of the Cr(V) Intermediates in the Cr(VI/V) Oxidations of Organic Substrates and of Relevance to Cr-Induced Cancers
An empirical method has been developed for determining the coordination number of Cr complexes (five- or six-coordinate) and the donor groups bound to Cr from the measured g and A values. The g values depend only on the nature of the donor groups and the number of each group, which is very useful in the characterisation of the coordination number and donors. By contrast, the A values appear to be sensitive to the nature of the equatorial donor atoms and the coordination geometry. Strong correlations have been found between the g values of isoelectronic Cr and V complexes and between the A values of analogous complexes of these two metal ions. These, combined, have been used to understand the solution chemistry of Cr using EPR spectroscopy. Such studies have also been invaluable in unravelling the biochemistry that occurs in cell media and cells exposed to carcinogenic Cr and, hence, possible mechanisms of Cr-induced cancers
A Novel Dual Air-Bearing Fixed-Ï Diffractometer for Small-Molecule Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction on Beamline I19 at Diamond Light Source
Herein, we describe the development of a novel dual air-bearing fixed-Ï diffractometer for beamline I19 at Diamond Light Source. The diffractometer is designed to facilitate the rapid data collections possible with a Dectris Pilatus 2M pixel-array photon-counting detector, while allowing remote operation in conjunction with a robotic sample changer. The sphere-of-confusion is made as small as practicably possible, through the use of air-bearings for both the Ï and Ï axes. The design and construction of the new instrument is described in detail and an accompanying paper by Johnson et al. (also in this issue) will provide a user perspective of its operation
