The perception and management of risk in UK office property development
Risk is an ever-present aspect of business, and risk taking is necessary for profit and economic progress. Speculative property development is popularly perceived as a 'risky business' yet, like other entrepreneurs, developers have opportunities to manage the risks they face; techniques include phasing and joint ventures. The associated areas of investment portfolio risk, development risk analysis and construction risk management have all been addressed by research. This article presents new knowledge about how developers perceive risks and the means they subsequently adopt to manage them. The developers of office projects across the UK were sent questionnaires by post. Respondents were asked about their perceptions of risks at the first appraisal stage and currently and about the risk management techniques that they had adopted. In-depth interviews with a selection of respondents were then used to discuss and augment the findings. Developers were most concerned about market-based risks at both stages. Concern about production-orientated risks was lower and fell significantly between the two stages. A fixed price contract was the most common risk management technique. Risk management techniques were used more often outside London and the South East. Developer type affects both the perception and management of risk. While developers do manage risk, decisions are made on the basis of professional and business experience. These findings should help development companies manage risk in a more objective and analytical way
Thin Film Ceramic Strain Sensor Development for High Temperature Environments
The need for sensors to operate in harsh environments is illustrated by the need for measurements in the turbine engine hot section. The degradation and damage that develops over time in hot section components can lead to catastrophic failure. At present, the degradation processes that occur in the harsh hot section environment are poorly characterized, which hinders development of more durable components, and since it is so difficult to model turbine blade temperatures, strains, etc, actual measurements are needed. The need to consider ceramic sensing elements is brought about by the temperature limits of metal thin film sensors in harsh environments. The effort at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to develop high temperature thin film ceramic static strain gauges for application in turbine engines is described, first in the fan and compressor modules, and then in the hot section. The near-term goal of this research effort was to identify candidate thin film ceramic sensor materials and provide a list of possible thin film ceramic sensor materials and corresponding properties to test for viability. A thorough literature search was conducted for ceramics that have the potential for application as high temperature thin film strain gauges chemically and physically compatible with the NASA GRCs microfabrication procedures and substrate materials. Test results are given for tantalum, titanium and zirconium-based nitride and oxynitride ceramic films

Serum albumin and hospitalization among pediatric patients with end-stage renal disease who started dialysis therapy.
BackgroundHypoalbuminemia is a strong predictor of hospitalization and mortality among adult dialysis patients. However, data are scant on the association between serum albumin and hospitalization among children new to dialysis.MethodsIn a retrospective cohort study of children 1-17 years old with end-stage renal disease receiving dialysis therapy in a large US dialysis organization 2007-2011, we examined the association of serum albumin with hospitalization frequency and total hospitalization days using a negative binomial regression model.ResultsAmong 416 eligible patients, median (interquartile range) age was 14 (10-16) years and mean ± SD baseline serum albumin level was 3.7 ± 0.8 g/dL. Two hundred sixty-six patients (64%) were hospitalized during follow-up with an incidence rate of 2.2 (95%CI, 1.9-2.4) admissions per patient-year. There was a U-shaped association between serum albumin and hospitalization frequency; hospitalization rates (95%CI) were 2.7 (2.2-3.2), 1.9 (1.5-2.4), 1.6 (1.3-1.9), and 2.7 (1.7-3.6) per patient-year among patients with serum albumin levels < 3.5, 3.5- < 4.0, 4.0- < 4.5, and ≥ 4.5 g/dL, respectively. Case mix-adjusted hospitalization incidence rate ratios (IRRs) (95%CI) were 1.63 (1.24-2.13), 1.32 (1.10-1.58), and 1.25 (1.06-1.49) at serum albumin levels 3.0, 3.5, and 4.5 g/dL, respectively (reference: 4.0 g/dL). Similar trends were observed in hospitalization days. These associations remained robust against further adjustment for laboratory variables associated with malnutrition and inflammation.ConclusionsBoth high and low serum albumin were associated with higher hospitalization in children starting dialysis. Because the observed association is novel and not fully explainable especially for high serum albumin levels, interpreting the results requires caution and further studies are needed to confirm and elucidate this association before clinical recommendations are made
Leg disorders in broiler chickens : prevalence, risk factors and prevention
Broiler (meat) chickens have been subjected to intense genetic selection. In the past 50 years, broiler growth rates have increased
by over 300% (from 25 g per day to 100 g per day). There is growing societal concern that many broiler chickens have impaired
locomotion or are even unable to walk. Here we present the results of a comprehensive survey of commercial flocks which
quantifies the risk factors for poor locomotion in broiler chickens.We assessed the walking ability of 51,000 birds, representing 4.8
million birds within 176 flocks.We also obtained information on approximately 150 different management factors associated with
each flock. At a mean age of 40 days, over 27.6% of birds in our study showed poor locomotion and 3.3% were almost unable to
walk. The high prevalence of poor locomotion occurred despite culling policies designed to remove severely lame birds from
flocks. We show that the primary risk factors associated with impaired locomotion and poor leg health are those specifically
associated with rate of growth. Factors significantly associated with high gait score included the age of the bird (older birds), visit
(second visit to same flock), bird genotype, not feeding whole wheat, a shorter dark period during the day, higher stocking density
at the time of assessment, no use of antibiotic, and the use of intact feed pellets. The welfare implications are profound. Worldwide
approximately 261010 broilers are reared within similar husbandry systems.We identify a range of management factors that could
be altered to reduce leg health problems, but implementation of these changes would be likely to reduce growth rate and
production. A debate on the sustainability of current practice in the production of this important food source is required
Essential versus accessory aspects of cell death: recommendations of the NCCD 2015
Cells exposed to extreme physicochemical or mechanical stimuli die in an uncontrollable manner, as a result of their immediate structural breakdown. Such an unavoidable variant of cellular demise is generally referred to as ‘accidental cell death’ (ACD). In most settings, however, cell death is initiated by a genetically encoded apparatus, correlating with the fact that its course can be altered by pharmacologic or genetic interventions. ‘Regulated cell death’ (RCD) can occur as part of physiologic programs or can be activated once adaptive responses to perturbations of the extracellular or intracellular microenvironment fail. The biochemical phenomena that accompany RCD may be harnessed to classify it into a few subtypes, which often (but not always) exhibit stereotyped morphologic features. Nonetheless, efficiently inhibiting the processes that are commonly thought to cause RCD, such as the activation of executioner caspases in the course of apoptosis, does not exert true cytoprotective effects in the mammalian system, but simply alters the kinetics of cellular demise as it shifts its morphologic and biochemical correlates. Conversely, bona fide cytoprotection can be achieved by inhibiting the transduction of lethal signals in the early phases of the process, when adaptive responses are still operational. Thus, the mechanisms that truly execute RCD may be less understood, less inhibitable and perhaps more homogeneous than previously thought. Here, the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death formulates a set of recommendations to help scientists and researchers to discriminate between essential and accessory aspects of cell death
Race–Gender Differences in the Impact of History of Heavy Drinking on Current Alcohol Consumption during the Transition to Adulthood
American youth transitioning to adulthood consume more alcohol than in any other period of the life course. This high level of consumption can result in serious consequences, including lost productivity, death and disability, sexual assault, and addiction. Nevertheless, relatively little is known, especially by race and gender, about how prior history of heavy drinking (e.g., in late adolescence) impacts drinking in young adulthood. Utilizing data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1994-2004) for African Americans, Latinos, and Whites (N = 2,300), we found that Whites and Latinos drink more than African Americans, and men report drinking more than women. However, accounting for a history of heavy drinking introduces considerable variation in current drinking patterns by race–gender status. A history of heavy drinking more than doubles the number of drinks consumed by African American women, putting their drinking levels on par with African American men and White women and raising their level of drinking above Latinas. Further, African American women\u27s probability of heavy drinking becomes indistinguishable from that of African American men and White women, once accounting for a prior history of binge drinking. For Latinas with a history of heavy drinking, the probability of being a current binge drinker is equal to Latinos and White men and higher than African Americans and White women
The Structure and Function of Alkamides in Mammalian Systems
Alkamides, or alkylamides, are fatty acid amides produced by plants from the genera Echinacea, Acmella, Spilanthes, and Heliopsis among others. Alkamides contain varying head groups, an amide moiety, and a fatty acid tail with varying numbers of carbons and double and triple bonds. Extracts from these plants have been used worldwide by native peoples for the treatment of numerous medical disorders, including bacterial and viral infections, inflammation, liver and kidney disorders, and pain. In vitro, these molecules display a variety of different activities depending on the cell type tested. Studies with neurons, macrophages and mast cells have revealed interactions between alkamides and a number of different cells surface receptors and intracellular signaling molecules. Generally, the alkamides have been found to exert suppressive effects, inhibiting cellular activation. In this report we introduce the structure of alkamides and review their effects in a number of different cellular systems. We also describe structure:function studies that have been performed with alkamides. While these studies have not as yet revealed general rules for alkamide activity, interesting insights have been revealed. The stage is set for the development of synthetic, designer alkamides with targeted in vivo activities
Agenesia e lipoma de corpo caloso: relato de caso
The agenesis and lipoma of the corpus callosum is a very rare association. We report the case of a 18-years old woman with rare epileptic seizures since the age of 6 years, normal neurological examination, as well as normal electroencephalogram. The brain computed tomography scanning and the magnetic resonance showed the lipoma and the agenesis of the corpus callosum.A agenesia e lipoma do corpo caloso é uma associação muito rara. Comparison of histochemical methods for the analysis of eosinophils and mast cells using a porcine model of eosinophilic esophagitis
IntroductionAccurate identification of eosinophils in tissue sections is required for diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis in humans and the assessment of severity of disease in allergy models. The pig may be a good model for sensitization and allergy models due to anatomical, physiological, and immunological similarities to humans. However, comparative studies on histochemical detection of eosinophils in fixed porcine tissue are lacking.MethodsQualitative and quantitative comparisons were performed for six histochemical methods previously reported for eosinophil and mast cell detection in other species. Astra Blue/Vital New Red, Congo Red, Luna, Sirius Red, Toluidine Blue, and modified regressive Hematoxylin & Eosin were applied to formalin-fixed paraffin embedded full-thickness sections of porcine esophagus. Specimens were collected from young, crossbred pigs sensitized to ovalbumin with or without subsequent oral exposure to ovalbumin to produce eosinophilic esophagitis lesions for comparison to non-allergic controls.ResultsEase of eosinophil quantitation was analyzed, and varied by histochemical stain, to determine whether stain selection increased accuracy and efficiency of evaluation. Noticeable differences in color contrast between intracytoplasmic granules, surrounding tissue, and cellular components aided detection and identification of eosinophils and mast cells with Astra Blue/New Vital Red and Toluidine Blue, respectively. For eosinophils, Congo Red and H&E were adequate, while Luna and Sirius Red presented challenges for quantitation.DiscussionIn this case, rapid and reliable characterization of porcine esophageal allergy models was made possible by using Astra Blue/New Vital Red for eosinophils and Toluidine Blue for mast cells
