Inspiratory muscle training reduces blood lactate concentration during volitional hyperpnoea

    Get PDF
Although reduced blood lactate concentrations ([lac−]B) have been observed during whole-body exercise following inspiratory muscle training (IMT), it remains unknown whether the inspiratory muscles are the source of at least part of this reduction. To investigate this, we tested the hypothesis that IMT would attenuate the increase in [lac−]B caused by mimicking, at rest, the breathing pattern observed during high-intensity exercise. Twenty-two physically active males were matched for 85% maximal exercise minute ventilation (V˙Emax) and divided equally into an IMT or a control group. Prior to and following a 6 week intervention, participants performed 10 min of volitional hyperpnoea at the breathing pattern commensurate with 85% V˙Emax

Phase Transition in Anyon Superconductivity at Finite Temperature

The magnetic response of the charged anyon fluid at temperatures larger than the fermion energy gap is investigated in the self-consistent field approximation. In this temperature region a new phase, characterized by an inhomogeneous magnetic penetration, is found. The inhomogeneity is linked to the existence of an imaginary magnetic mass which increases with the temperature. The system stability in the new phase is proved by investigating the electromagnetic field rest-energy spectrum.Comment: 18 pages, revte

Iron, silicate, and light co-limitation of three Southern Ocean diatom species

    Get PDF
The effect of combined iron, silicate, and light co-limitation was investigated in the three diatom species Actinocyclus sp. Ehrenberg, Chaetoceros dichaeta Ehrenberg, and Chaetoceros debilis Cleve, isolated from the Southern Ocean (SO). Growth of all species was co-limited by iron and silicate, reflected in a significant increase in the number of cell divisions compared to the control. Lowest relative Si uptake and drastic frustule malformation was found under iron and silicate co-limitation in C. dichaeta, while Si limitation in general caused cell elongation in both Chaetoceros species. Higher light intensities similar to SO surface conditions showed a negative impact on growth of C. dichaeta and Actinocyclus sp. and no effect on C. debilis. This is in contrast to the assumed light limitation of SO diatoms due to deep wind driven mixing. Our results suggest that growth and species composition of Southern Ocean diatoms is influenced by a sensitive interaction of the abiotic factors, iron, silicate, and light

Impaired perceptual learning in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome is mediated by parvalbumin neuron dysfunction and is reversible.

To uncover the circuit-level alterations that underlie atypical sensory processing associated with autism, we adopted a symptom-to-circuit approach in the Fmr1-knockout (Fmr1-/-) mouse model of Fragile X syndrome. Using a go/no-go task and in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, we find that impaired visual discrimination in Fmr1-/- mice correlates with marked deficits in orientation tuning of principal neurons and with a decrease in the activity of parvalbumin interneurons in primary visual cortex. Restoring visually evoked activity in parvalbumin cells in Fmr1-/- mice with a chemogenetic strategy using designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs was sufficient to rescue their behavioral performance. Strikingly, human subjects with Fragile X syndrome exhibit impairments in visual discrimination similar to those in Fmr1-/- mice. These results suggest that manipulating inhibition may help sensory processing in Fragile X syndrome

Dilution versus pollution in watercourses affected by acid mine drainage: a graphic model for the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain)

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to chemically characterize the water quality impacts of the 88 acid mine drainage (AMD) generating mines in the Spanish sector of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). This was necessary because the Water Framework Directive of the European Union and the hydrological plans of the Tinto, Odiel, and Piedras river basins require that water quality be improved enough to allow at least some of the rivers in the IPB to sustain healthy fish populations by 2027. The results indicate a clear decrease in metals, arsenic, and sulfate concentrations and increased pH between the AMD-sources and the river channels.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Immediate vaginal reconstruction following pelvic exenteration using the pedicled vertical Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap: A technical note

    Get PDF

    Graphene plasmonics

Two rich and vibrant fields of investigation, graphene physics and plasmonics, strongly overlap. Not only does graphene possess intrinsic plasmons that are tunable and adjustable, but a combination of graphene with noble-metal nanostructures promises a variety of exciting applications for conventional plasmonics. The versatility of graphene means that graphene-based plasmonics may enable the manufacture of novel optical devices working in different frequency ranges, from terahertz to the visible, with extremely high speed, low driving voltage, low power consumption and compact sizes. Here we review the field emerging at the intersection of graphene physics and plasmonics.Comment: Review article; 12 pages, 6 figures, 99 references (final version available only at publisher's web site

Effect of milk production on reproductive performance in dairy herds

    Get PDF
The objective of the present study was to assess the relationship between individual cow milk yield and fertility, accounting for the contextual effect of the herd. A data set including 657,968 lactations from 677 dairy herds in Argentina from 2001 to 2012 was used. The odds of pregnancy by 100 d in milk (DIM) were assessed by a multilevel logistic model (with cow as the first and herd as the second hierarchical level), and time to pregnancy was assessed by a proportional hazards regression model. Multilevel logistic models included the fixed effects of milk yield by 80 DIM, parity, year, and calving season at cow level and quartiles of herd milk yield by 80 DIM as a contextual effect. The proportional hazards model included the effect of daily cow-level milk yield as time-dependent variable, with milk yield at herd level as the stratification variable. Cows producing 1 standard deviation over the mean milk yield of their herd had 1.3 percentage point lower pregnancy by 100 DIM (from 31.4 to 30.1%; odds ratio = 0.942) when in herds in the top quartile of milk yield, whereas they increased 0.5 percentage points (from 27.9 to 28.4%) when in herds in the lowest quartile of milk yield. Only 4% of the observed variation in pregnancy by 100 DIM was explained by the random effect of the herd. Similarly, cows producing 1 standard deviation (8 kg/d) greater than the herd mean daily milk had 1.3% lower hazard of pregnancy (hazard ratio = 0.987) at 63 DIM in herds in the top quartile of milk yield, whereas they had 14.8% higher hazard (hazard ratio = 1.148) in herds in the lowest quartile of milk yield. The magnitude of the negative association between the cow's daily milk yield and the hazard of pregnancy increased with DIM. In conclusion, the relationship between milk yield and reproductive performance is statistically significant, but the effect size is practically small and is modulated by herd production level.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

Introduction: the quality scale of life for stroke may offer a more detailed information and on the total recovery of the patient, besides a more significant evaluation from his perspective. Objective: to determine the quality of life of the patients with ischemic stroke six months after their discharge. Methods: a cross descriptive study was developed in 123 patients with the clinical and/or imaging diagnosis of a first ischemic stroke, admitted in the stroke unit at the University General Hospital Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Cienfuegos, in the period between November 1st 2015 and October 31st 2016. The variables analyzed were: demographic (age, sex, origin, and labor relationship), related with the event (type of brain infarction and rehabilitation treatment). The descriptive procedure was done through central measure trends and percentages. Results: the male sex predominated with an average age of 69,29 years. The 84,6 % of the patients received rehabilitation treatment, those presenting a lower punctuation from the scale media of the quality of life for stroke. From the 31 patients with labor relationship 27 could return to work with an average punctuation of 12,07 in that scale. The 53,6 % from presented mild involvement of the quality of life and only and only 4,9 % classified as a severe involvement. Conclusion: mild involvement of quality of life predominated. The most affected areas were: emotions, socio-familiar functioning and cognition
