Sixteen Years of Sound and Music Computing: A Look Into the History and Trends of the Conference and Community

    Get PDF
This contribution provides an overview of the Sound & Music Computing conference and community over the course of its sixteen years. As a sequel to a previous corresponding contribution investigating the community ten years ago, here we analyze the proceedings of the past editions, as well as the changes in the organization of the conference itself. The analysis reveals the growth of the SMC community in terms of attendees and countries represented at the conference, highlights the changes in trends and topics, and provides insights on the directions of the conference. A reflection is made with regards to the SMC roadmap originally conceived in 2004. Motivated by similar initiatives in "sister" communities, this resource is made available to the community at http://smc.lim.di.unimi.it/

Formalizing Schoenberg's Fundamentals of Musical Composition through Petri Nets

The formalization of musical composition rules is a topic that has been studied for a long time. It can lead to a better understanding of the underlying processes, and provide a useful tool for musicologist to aid and speed up the analysis process. In our attempt we introduce Schoenberg\u2019s rules from Fundamentals of Musical Composition using a specialized version of Petri nets, called Music Petri nets.Petri nets are a formal tool for studying systems that are concurrent, asynchronous, distributed, parallel, non-deterministic, and/or stochastic. We present some examples highlighting how multiple approaches to the analysis task can find counterparts in specific instances of PNs

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate antithrombin III (AT), thrombin (Fragment 1+2 [F1+2] and thrombin-antithrombin [TAT]) generation markers, as well as other coagulation parameters, such as prothrombin time, partial activated thromboplastin time, thrombin time, fibrinogen, euglobulin lysis time, and platelet count, in postmenopausal women after hormonal therapy. STUDY DESIGN: Forty-five patients who received either 0.625 mg/day unopposed oral conjugated equine estrogen (CEE), 0.625 mg/day oral CEE plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (MP), or 50 µg/day transdermal 17beta-estradiol plus MP, were included. Tests were performed before (T0) and after 3 (T3), 6 (T6) and 12 (T12) months of treatment. AT was determined by an amidolytic method, whereas F1+2 and TAT complex were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in the AT level of patients who received oral CEE plus MP at T3. There was no AT reduction in patients taking either oral CEE alone or transdermal 17beta-estradiol plus MP. F1+2 increased in all patients, but it reached statistical significance only in patients receiving transdermal 17beta-estradiol MP at T3. CONCLUSIONS: The CEE associated with MP treatment may reduce AT levels, whereas unopposed CEE or transdermal 17beta-estradiol plus MP does not change AT. These changes might not be clinically relevant in the general population; however, hormonal replacement therapy may increase the risk of thrombosis in women with congenital or acquired thrombophilia.OBJETIVO: Avaliar os marcadores antitrombina III (AT), fragmento 1 + 2 da trombina (F1+2) e complexo trombina-antitrombina (TAT), bem como outros parâmetros da coagulação, como tempo de pró-trombina, tempo parcial de tromboplastina ativado, tempo de trombina, fibrinogênio e tempo de lise da euglobulina em mulheres na pós-menopausa após terapia hormonal.

Diagnosis of central disorders of hypersomnolence: A reappraisal by European experts

Summary The aim of this European initiative is to facilitate a structured discussion to improve the next edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD), particularly the chapter on central disorders of hypersomnolence. The ultimate goal for a sleep disorders classification is to be based on the underlying neurobiological causes of the disorders with clear implication for treatment or, ideally, prevention and or healing. The current ICSD classification, published in 2014, inevitably has important shortcomings, largely reflecting the lack of knowledge about the precise neurobiological mechanisms underlying the majority of sleep disorders we currently delineate. Despite a clear rationale for the present structure, there remain important limitations that make it difficult to apply in routine clinical practice. Moreover, there are indications that the current structure may even prevent us from gaining relevant new knowledge to better understand certain sleep disorders and their neurobiological causes. We suggest the creation of a new consistent, complaint driven, hierarchical classification for central disorders of hypersomnolence; containing levels of certainty, and giving diagnostic tests, particularly the MSLT, a weighting based on its specificity and sensitivity in the diagnostic context. We propose and define three diagnostic categories (with levels of certainty): 1/“Narcolepsy” 2/“Idiopathic hypersomnia”, 3/“Idiopathic excessive sleepiness” (with subtypes)Peer reviewe

Reply to the discussion and comments of Azerêdo et al. (2023) and Schneider et al. (2023) on the paper by Magalhães et al. ‘Middle Jurassic multi-scale transgressive–regressive cycles: An example from the Lusitanian Basin’, The Depositional Record, 9, 174–202

cently published paper. The exchange of ideas, data and interpretation improves our knowledge and is the right way to discuss science\u27s advances. This reply considers the points raised by Azerêdo et al. (2023) and Schneider et al. (2023). In both manuscripts, these authors raised many issues about sedimentological and stratigraphic aspects that can be separated into two groups: (a) those related to the age of the studied succession; and (b) those assigning the studied succession to the Candeeiros Formation

The objective of this work was to evaluate the plastic overhead cover (POC) effect on must and wine composition of the cultivar Moscato Giallo. In 2006 vintage, it was performed a completely randomly designed experiment, in a vineyard covered with an impermeable plastic cloth, and without covering as control. From each vineyard, three microvinification (20 L) were elaborated. Physico-chemical analysis were performed for: musts – oBrix, reducer sugar contents, density, total acidity, tartaric acid, malic acid and pH; and wines – density, alcohol degree, acidity, volatile acidity, pH, dry extract, reducer sugar contents, ashes, I 420, volatile compounds and minerals. The must of the covered vineyard presented higher yield, but lower sugar content, due to delay on ripening. As consequence, the POC wines showed lower alcohol degree, but with the benefit of a lower ethyl-acetate and volatile acidity levels. The POC microclimate also caused a decrease of some minerals (mainly P and K) in the wines. POC improved the enological quality, however, this demands delay in the harvest date to achieve the adequate physiological and technological maturation of grapes

Evidence for a mixed mass composition at the `ankle' in the cosmic-ray spectrum

We report a first measurement for ultra-high energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the `ankle' at lg(E/eV)=18.519.0\lg(E/{\rm eV})=18.5-19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4A > 4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavoured as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth.Comment: Published version.
