    Micro-morphologies, habitats and associated biodiversity in a fluid venting submarine structure using ROV underwater images: Mercator mud volcano (Gulf of Cádiz)

    Mercator mud volcano has been explored by direct visual observations using a ROV at 350 to 370 m depth. Underwater images, taken mainly at the summit, have allowed characterizing the fluid venting environment, where different microforms, habitats and associated biota, with typical seepage components have been identified. Chemosynthetic bacterial communities were detected and sampled at the northeastern side of the summit at 350 m, next to pockmark-like depressions with diameters ranging 1 to 3 m, bioturbation marks, sediment mounds and authigenic carbonates of different sizes (0.1-5m length). Chemosynthesis-based communities were mainly composed by bacterial mats (patch diameter 10-30 cm), however some remains of cold seep chemosymbiotic bivalves (Lucinoma asapheus) were also found on the sediment. Habitat types at Mercator MV are influenced by oceanographic and sedimentation processes deposition and favouring fauna colonizing diverse substrate types, such as large sponges on slabs and sea-pens and annelids on soft bottoms

    RESUMEN Se examinó la estructura factorial, la confiabilidad, la validez convergente y discriminante, y la invarianza factorial por sexo, de la Satisfaction with Family Life Scale (SWFLS). Los participantes fueron 804 estudiantes de primaria y secundaria de escuelas privadas de Lima, con un promedio de edad de 13.5 años (DE = 1.6). Los resultados confirman la estructura unidimensional de la escala (χ2 = 3.49, df = 5, p = 0.63; χ2/df = 0.69; GFI = 0.998; CFI = 1; NFI = 0.998; RMSEA = 0 [IC90% 0, 0.038] y SRMR = 0.007), la invarianza factorial por sexo y una consistencia interna adecuada (α = 0.84; ω = 0.84; H = 0.85). Se obtuvieron evidencias satisfactorias de validez convergente y discriminante de las SWFLS con medidas de funcionalidad familiar, bienestar subjetivo y depresión. En conclusión, la SWFLS presenta excelentes propiedades psicométricas para medir la satisfacción con la vida familiar en escolares limeños.     Appliying inmersive worlds for solving real problems of Agronomic and Forest Engineering and Enology

    El Plan de Innovación Docente 2016-2017 de la Universidad de Córdoba planteaba en sus líneas prioritarias de proyectos el trabajo por competencias, las actividades académicamente dirigidas y la transferencia del conocimiento teórico a la práctica. En este contexto, se planteó desarrollar una serie de casos prácticos en un espacio virtual adaptado a las características de los mismos donde, a través de juegos de rol (en los que participaran no sólo los estudiantes sino profesionales del sector) los estudiantes organizados en grupos tendrían que resolver problemas y/o plantear y analizar sus posibles soluciones. Se presenta en el siguiente trabajo un proyecto colectivo donde diferentes escenarios prácticos y agentes involucrados en los temarios de asignaturas como Proyectos y Comercialización y Regulación de Mercados Agrarios comunes al Grado de Ingeniería Agroalimentaria y del Medio Rural, Ingeniería. Forestal y Enología fueron representados. En el primer caso, se propuso la elaboración y presentación de una licitación pública y en el segundo caso, la simulación de los actores de una subasta pública en una lonja. Entre los resultados del proyecto, se destacan los vídeos protagonizados por los alumnos reproduciendo las entrevistas reales y negociaciones de los agentes de la lonja o en el caso de la licitación, la preparación de los pliegos de una licitación por parte de los técnicos de un ayuntamiento, la elaboración de las plicas por parte de empresas licitadoras y la evaluación de las mismas por parte de la mesa de contratación. Además, los resultados de las encuestas a los estudiantes pusieron de manifiesto la importancia de este tipo de proyectos para mejorar la adquisición de conocimiento práctico de las asignaturas así como competencias de comportamiento y particularmente de tipo creativo.The Teaching Innovation Plan 2016-2017 of the University of Cordoba proposed in its priority lines of projects the work by competences, the academically directed activities and the transfer of theoretical knowledge to the practice. In this context, the development of a series of practical cases in a virtual space or role plays were proposed in which not only students but professionals of the sector participated. The students, organized in groups, had to solve problems and / or raise and analyze their possible solutions. We presented in the following work a collective project where different practical scenarios and agents involved in the subjects “Projects” and “Marketing and Regulation of Agrarian Markets” of the Degrees of Agri-food Engineering and Rural Environment, Forest Engineering and Oenology were represented. The first case was the preparation and the presentation of a public contract whereas in the second case, the simulation of the actors of a public auction was played. Among the results of the project, it is worth highlighting the videos played by the students reproducing the actual interviews and negotiations of the agents of the auction or in the case of the tender, the preparation of the bidding documents by the technicians of a town hall, the offers of the bidding companies and the evaluation of the same by the contracting table. In addition, the results of the student surveys showed the importance of this type of projects to improve the acquisition of practical knowledge of the subjects as well as behavioural competences and, particularly, of a creative type

    The Biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea: Estimates, Patterns, and Threats

    The Mediterranean Sea is a marine biodiversity hot spot. Here we combined an extensive literature analysis with expert opinions to update publicly available estimates of major taxa in this marine ecosystem and to revise and update several species lists. We also assessed overall spatial and temporal patterns of species diversity and identified major changes and threats. Our results listed approximately 17,000 marine species occurring in the Mediterranean Sea. However, our estimates of marine diversity are still incomplete as yet—undescribed species will be added in the future. Diversity for microbes is substantially underestimated, and the deep-sea areas and portions of the southern and eastern region are still poorly known. In addition, the invasion of alien species is a crucial factor that will continue to change the biodiversity of the Mediterranean, mainly in its eastern basin that can spread rapidly northwards and westwards due to the warming of the Mediterranean Sea. Spatial patterns showed a general decrease in biodiversity from northwestern to southeastern regions following a gradient of production, with some exceptions and caution due to gaps in our knowledge of the biota along the southern and eastern rims. Biodiversity was also generally higher in coastal areas and continental shelves, and decreases with depth. Temporal trends indicated that overexploitation and habitat loss have been the main human drivers of historical changes in biodiversity. At present, habitat loss and degradation, followed by fishing impacts, pollution, climate change, eutrophication, and the establishment of alien species are the most important threats and affect the greatest number of taxonomic groups. All these impacts are expected to grow in importance in the future, especially climate change and habitat degradation. The spatial identification of hot spots highlighted the ecological importance of most of the western Mediterranean shelves (and in particular, the Strait of Gibraltar and the adjacent Alboran Sea), western African coast, the Adriatic, and the Aegean Sea, which show high concentrations of endangered, threatened, or vulnerable species. The Levantine Basin, severely impacted by the invasion of species, is endangered as well

    Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

    The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.     Searching for a Cell-Based Therapeutic Tool for Haemophilia A within the Embryonic/Foetal Liver and the Aorta-Gonads-Mesonephros Region

    The development of new strategies based on cell therapy approaches to correct haemophilia A (HA) requires further insights into new cell populations capable of producing coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) and presenting stable engraftment potential. The major producers of FVIII in the adult are liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) and in a lesser degree bone marrow-derived cells, both of which have been shown to ameliorate the bleeding phenotype in adult HA mice after transplantation. We have previously shown that cells from the foetal liver (FL) and the aorta-gonads-mesonephros (AGM) haematopoietic locations possess higher LSEC engraftment potential in newborn mice compared with adult-derived LSECs, constituting likely therapeutic targets for the treatment of HA in neonates. However, less is known about the production of FVIII in embryonic locations. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis were performed to assess the relative level of FVIII production in different embryonic tissues and at various developmental stages, identifying the FL and AGM region from day 12 (E12) as prominent sources of FVIII. Furthermore, FL-derived VE-cad+CD45-Lyve1+/− endothelial/endothelial progenitor cells, presenting vascular engraftment potential, produced high levels of F8 ribonucleic acid compared with CD45+ blood progenitors or Dlk1+ hepatoblasts. In addition, we show that the E11 AGM explant cultures expanded cells with LSEC repopulation activity, instrumental to further understand signals for in vitro generation of LSECs.
