Sinotubular Junction Remodeling with Aortic Cusp repair. An alternative to Bentall operation for Ascending Aortic aneurysm with Aortic Valve Regurgitation.

We present a 72-year-old female patient with ascending aortic aneurysm and aortic valve regurgitation, who was referred for surgery. Preoperative echocardiography demonstrated a dilated sinutubular junction (STJ), preserved sinus dimensions and moderate to severe aortic valve insufficiency with central regurgitant jet. During surgery, comprehensive visual assessment of aortic cusp configuration revealed prolapse of the non-coronary cusp, which was repaired by appropriate techniques. Ascending aorta pathology was corrected with sinutubular junction remodelling (STJR). The combination of STJR and cusp repair is an excellent alternative to root replacement with no prosthesis-related long term complications

Elements of F-ast Proton Decay

Gauge coupling unification in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) strongly suggests the existence of a Grand Unified Theory (GUT), which could be probed by the observation of proton decay. Proton lifetime in the p \to (e+|mu+) pi0 dimension six mode is proportional in the fourth power to the GUT mass scale, and inversely proportional in the fourth power to the GUT coupling. We provide an updated dictionary of solutions for the relevant unification parameters with generic beta-function coefficients, significantly upgrading the level of detail with which second order effects are treated, and correcting subtle published errors. F-lipped SU(5) with strict MSSM field content is known to survive existing null detection limits for proton decay approaching 10^34 years, and indeed, the lifetime predicted by prior studies can be so long that successful detection is not currently plausible. Recently studied classes of F-theory derived GUT models postulate additional vector-like multiplets at the TeV scale which modify the renormalization group to yield a substantial increase in the SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L unified coupling. We find the conjunction of these models with the F-resh analysis employed to be comparatively F-ast proton decay, only narrowly evading existing detection limits, and likely falling within the observable range of proposed next generation detectors such as DUSEL and Hyper-Kamiokande. The TeV-scale vector multiplets are themselves suitable for cross correlation by the Large Hadron Collider. Their presence moreover magnifies the gap between the dual mass scales of Flipped SU(5), allowing for an elongated second stage renormalization, pushing grand unification to the doorstep of the reduced Planck mass.Comment: V2, As published in Nuclear Physics B; 57 pages, 7 figures, 12 table

Optimal Charge and Color Breaking conditions in the MSSM

In the MSSM, we make a careful tree-level study of Charge and Color Breaking conditions in the plane $(H_2, \tilde{u}_L, \tilde{u}_R)$, focusing on the top quark scalar case. A simple and fast procedure to compute the VEVs of the dangerous vacuum is presented and used to derive a model-independent optimal CCB bound on $A_t$. This bound takes into account all possible deviations of the CCB vacuum from the D-flat directions. For large $\tan \beta$, it provides a CCB maximal mixing for the stop scalar fields $\tilde{t}_1,\tilde{t}_2$, which automatically rules out the Higgs maximal mixing $|A_t|=\sqrt{6} m_{\tilde{t}}$. As a result, strong limits on the stop mass spectrum and a reduction, in some cases substantial, of the one-loop upper bound on the CP-even lightest Higgs boson mass, $m_h$, are obtained. To incorporate one-loop leading corrections, this tree-level CCB condition should be evaluated at an appropriate renormalization scale which proves to be the SUSY scale.Comment: 41 pages, 7 eps figures, minor corrections, references added, to appear in Nucl. SuSpect: a Fortran Code for the Supersymmetric and Higgs Particle Spectrum in the MSSM

We present the Fortran code SuSpect version 2.3, which calculates the Supersymmetric and Higgs particle spectrum in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The calculation can be performed in constrained models with universal boundary conditions at high scales such as the gravity (mSUGRA), anomaly (AMSB) or gauge (GMSB) mediated breaking models, but also in the non-universal MSSM case with R-parity and CP conservation. Care has been taken to treat important features such as the renormalization group evolution of parameters between low and high energy scales, the consistent implementation of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking and the calculation of the physical masses of the Higgs bosons and supersymmetric particles taking into account the dominant radiative corrections. Some checks of important theoretical and experimental features, such as the absence of non desired minima, large fine-tuning in the electroweak symmetry breaking condition, as well as agreement with precision measurements can be performed. The program is user friendly, simple to use, self-contained and can easily be linked with other codes; it is rather fast and flexible, thus allowing scans of the parameter space with several possible options and choices for model assumptions and approximations.Comment: 44 pages, 1 figure. Echocardiography in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: usefulness of old and new techniques in the diagnosis and pathophysiological assessment

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common inherited cardiomyopathy. The identification of patients with HCM is sometimes still a challenge. Moreover, the pathophysiology of the disease is complex because of left ventricular hyper-contractile state, diastolic dysfunction, ischemia and obstruction which can be coexistent in the same patient. In this review, we discuss the current and emerging echocardiographic methodology that can help physicians in the correct diagnostic and pathophysiological assessment of patients with HCM

The urban popular song of greek regions during the early recording period: style, music modes, performance

The present thesis explores the ontology of modal music creation, and especially the models used in early recordings of the Greek-speaking urban popular song, taking into account the singularities that stem from the characteristics of oral musical traditions.For research purposes, part of the repertoire of the selected recordings is based on the a priori statement of the modal model of music development, from the aspect of social actors themselves. In particular, the recordings self-categorized as maggiore in the title of the musical work, are selected as a case study. Subsequent to the comparative analysis of the recordings, what is also explored is the consistency in composition and performance based on a sequence of melodic development models, with the ultimate aim to examine the modal system of “laikoi dromoi” (popular modes).Aiming to profile musical customs/practices and collective cognitive structures however, points to the need for an interdisciplinary approach, due to the orality condition of proposed cultural practices. This need is satisfied via the utilization of methodological and conceptual approaches of social sciences and especially via the utilization of the Actor Network Theory.A musicological analysis of musical modes also allows for the re-examination of issues regarding musical style and performance. These include the role played by instrumentation, orchestral composition and composers in the shaping of musical genre characteristics, the contribution of the recording industry, the interaction between musical heterogeneities and the role of musical networks, the influence of historical and social phenomena, etc.The overall aim of the thesis is to introduce a method of musicological analysis for the urban popular song and at the same time renegotiate social and cultural practices related to the repertoire established as “rebetiko”.Η παρούσα διατριβή διερευνά την οντολογία των τροπικών μοντέλων της μουσικής στις πρώιμες ηχογραφήσεις του ελληνόφωνου αστικού λαϊκού τραγουδιού, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις ιδιαιτερότητες που απορρέουν από τον προφορικό τους χαρακτήρα, καθώς και από την διαπολιτισμική τους φύση. Οι «δρόμοι» που αποτελούν τον θεμέλιο λίθο αυτής της τροπικότητας είναι ένα πεδίο εξαιρετικού μουσικολογικού ενδιαφέροντος, που ωστόσο αντιστέκεται στην συστηματική προσέγγιση. Ποιος είναι ο βαθμός συνέπειας στην χρήση της σχετικής ονοματολογίας και πώς αυτή μπορεί να αξιολογηθεί ως εργαλείο για την σύνθεση, τον αυτοσχεδιασμό και την εν γένει αισθητική του εν λόγω ρεπερτορίου; Η παρούσα έρευνα προτείνει την συγκριτική ανάλυση των σωζόμενων ιστορικών ηχογραφήσεων, εκκινώντας από την a priori κατηγοριοποίηση ανά μουσικό τρόπο, η οποία προκύπτει από τις σχετικές ενδείξεις που συνοδεύουν την αναγραφή του τίτλου στις ετικέτες των δίσκων 78 στροφών.Οι αναγραφές αυτές προσφέρουν μια πολύτιμη ένδειξη από την πλευρά των ίδιων των κοινωνικών δρώντων. Η ένδειξη αυτή είναι μοναδική, δεδομένου του ότι δεν διαθέτουμε άλλες αναφορές στον τρόπο με τον οποίον χρησιμοποιούνται οι σχετικές ονοματολογίες, αφού δεν μας έχει παραδοθεί καμιάς μορφής θεωρητικό πόνημα ή σχόλιο σύγχρονο της υπό μελέτης περιόδου.Με αφετηρία την ως άνω κατηγοριοποίηση, επιχειρείται στη συνέχεια μια συστηματική μουσικολογική ανάλυση των ηχογραφημάτων που αυτο-κατατάσσονται στην κατηγορία ματζόρε, μέσα από την καταγραφή και τον σχολιασμό της μορφής και του συντακτικού τους. Με τον τρόπο αυτό, η «αρχαιολογία» των μουσικών τρόπων προσφέρει τη δυνατότητα θεώρησης ζητημάτων τα οποία αφορούν την μουσική υφολογία και επιτέλεση. Μεταξύ αυτών συγκαταλέγονται ο ρόλος του οργανολογίου, της σύνθεσης ορχήστρας και των συνθετών στην διαμόρφωση των ειδολογικών μουσικών χαρακτηριστικών, η συμβολή της βιομηχανίας της δισκογραφίας, η αλληλεπίδραση με μουσικές ετερότητες και ο ρόλος των μουσικών δικτύων, καθώς και η επίδραση ιστορικών και κοινωνικών φαινομένων.Το εγχείρημα της σκιαγράφησης μουσικών έξεων και κατ’ επέκταση συλλογικών γνωστικών δομών, λόγω της συνθήκης της προφορικότητας των μελετώμενων πολιτισμικών πρακτικών, δεν είναι εφικτό χωρίς μια διεπιστημονική προσέγγιση, η οποία διασφαλίζεται εδώ με την αξιοποίηση μεθοδολογικών και εννοιολογικών προσεγγίσεων των κοινωνικών επιστημών, και πιο συγκεκριμένα της Actor-Network Theory. Μέσα από το πρίσμα αυτό, η μουσικολογία του αστικού λαϊκού τραγουδιού ολοκληρώνεται με μια απόπειρα επαναδιαπραγμάτευσης ζητημάτων τα οποία αφορούν σε κοινωνικές και πολιτισμικές πρακτικές που σχετίζονται με το ρεπερτόριο που χαρακτηρίζεται στον τρέχοντα λόγο ως «ρεμπέτικο»

85 σ.Η εργασία αυτή παρουσιάζει την εξέλιξη της ιστιοπλοϊκής τέχνης, μέσα από τη παράλληλη σχέση της με την παρόχθια υποστήριξή της, μια σχέση πάντα πολύ στενά συνδεδεμένη . Από την αρχαία Ελλάδα με την κατασκευή των νεώσοικων (κτήρια που φυλάσσονταν οι τριήρεις ) ευρήματα των οποίων βρίσκουμε σε πόλεις που είχαν ναυτική δύναμη, μέχρι σήμερα με τους ναυτικούς ομίλους, μέσα από τις ανάγκες των οποίων έχουν διευρυνθεί και οι κτιριολογικές απαιτήσεις . Ένα μέρος της εργασίας αναφέρεται στην ιστορική εξέλιξη της ιστιοπλοΐας από τη γένεση της μέχρι τη σημερινή χρήση της, για αθλητισμό και αναψυχή. Παράλληλα παρουσιάζει την εξέλιξη των χερσαίων εγκαταστάσεων οι οποίες ποικίλουν ανάλογα με την εποχή, την χρήση αλλά και την οικονομική και πολιτιστική περίοδο που διανύει η κάθε κατασκευή. Η εμφάνιση των πρώτων Ναυτικών club δημιουργήματα της μεγαλοαστικής τάξης, εξελίσσονται ραγδαία με τις σύγχρονες εγκαταστάσεις που στηρίζουν τους ολυμπιακούς αγώνες και δίνουν προβάδισμα στο άθλημα της ιστιοπλοΐας. Με την εξάπλωση του αθλήματος εμφανίζονται όλο και περισσότερες κατασκευές πιο ευέλικτες και πιο άρτιες για την υποστήριξή του. Η παρουσίαση χαρακτηριστικών παραδειγμάτων ομίλων επηρεασμένων από διάφορα αρχιτεκτονικά ρεύματα, η σύγκριση ολυμπιακών ιστιοπλοϊκών κέντρων και ο διαφορετικός τρόπος εξέλιξή τους, δίνουν μία καθαρή εικόνα της σημερινής κατάστασης στο χώρο των κτηριακών εγκαταστάσεων για την στήριξη του ναυταθλητισμού. Τέλος η προσπάθεια αξιολόγησης των παραδειγμάτων πάντα με γνώμονα την κοινωνικοπολιτική επιρροή των κατασκευών και των αναγκών του αθλήματος δίνουν τη δυνατότητα δημιουργίας ενός οργανογράμματος για την κατασκευή σύγχρονων ναυταθλητικών εγκαταστάσεων . Όλα αυτά μέσα από μία ελλιπή βιβλιογραφία αλλά και μία πρωτότυπη προσπάθεια παρουσίασης της συνεύρεσης ενός αθλήματος που δραστηριοποιείτε στη θάλασσα και της ενδιαφέρουσας αρχιτεκτονικής έκφρασης που εμφανίζεται μέσα από τις ανάγκες του στη στεριανή υποστήριξή του.This paper presents the development of the sailing art, through the parallel relationship with riparian support, a relationship always very closely connected. From ancient Greece to the construction of the ship sheds (buildings kept triremes) findings of which are in cities that had naval power today with seafarers groups, through whose needs have broadened and building requirements. A part of this work refers to the historical evolution of sailing from the birth until the present use, for sport and recreation. At the same time shows the evolution of land plants which vary depending on the season, but the use and economic and cultural period spent each construction. The appearance of the first yacht clubs was the creations of the bourgeoisie, rapidly evolving with modern facilities that support the Olympic Games and give precedence to the sport of sailing. With the expansion of the sport more and more structures are becoming more flexible and more robust for its support. The presentation of typical examples of sailing clubs influenced by various architectural styles, the comparison of Olympic sailing centers and the different way of evolution, giving a clear picture of the current situation in the field of building facilities for the support of the sport. Finally, the attempt to evaluate the examples always driven the sociopolitical influence of structures and needs of the sport allow the creation of an organizational structure for the construction of modern sailing facilities. All this through a lack of bibliography and an attempt to approach a subject that the main activities of the sport are in the sea but there is an interesting architectural expression that occurs through the needs of the sport in the mainland support
