A sum rule approach to the violation of Dashen's theorem
A classic sum rule by Das et al. is extended to seven of the low-energy
constants , introduced by Urech, which parameterize electromagnetic
corrections at chiral order . Using the spurion formalism, a simple
convolution representation is shown to hold and the structure in terms of the
chiral renormalization scale, the QCD renormalization scale and the QED gauge
parameter is displayed. The role of the resonances is studied as providing
rational interpolants to relevant QCD n-point functions in the euclidian
domain. A variety of asymptotic constraints must be implemented which have
phenomenological consequences. A current assumption concerning the dominance of
the lowest-lying resonances is shown clearly to fail in some cases.Comment: A few corrections and improvements made, the list of references is

Flavour in supersymmetric Grand Unification: a democratic approach
We consider the flavour problem in a supersymmetric Grand Unified theory with
gauged SU(6) group, where the Higgs doublets are understood as pseudo-Goldstone
bosons of a larger \SU(6)\otimes\SU(6) global symmetry of the Higgs
superpotential. A key element of this work is that we never appeal to any
flavour symmetry. One main interesting feature emerges: only one of the light
fermions, an up-type quark, to be identified with the top, can get a Yukawa
coupling at renormalizable level. This fact, together with bottom-tau Yukawa
unification, also implied in our scheme, gives rise to a characteristic
correlation between the top and the Higgs mass. By including a flavour-blind
discrete symmetry and requiring that all higher dimensional operators be
mediated by the exchange of appropriate heavy multiplets, it is possible to
give an approximate description of all masses and mixing angles in term of a
hierarchy of grand unified scales. A special ``texture'' arises, implying a
relation between the top mass and the third generation mixing angles. Several
other possible consequences of this approach are pointed out, concerning the
mass ratio, the Cabibbo angle and the proton decay.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures in LaTeX, IFUP -- TH. 7/9
One Loop Effects of Non-Standard Triple Gauge Boson Vertices
Low energy effects of generic extensions of the Standard Model can be
comprehensively parametrized in terms of higher dimensional effective
operators. After the success of all the recent precission tests on the Standard
Model, we argue that any sensible description of these extensions at the
Z-scale must be stable under higher order quantum corrections. The imposition
of gauge invariance seems to be the simplest and most
natural way to fulfill this requirement. With this assumption, all the possible
deviations from the standard triple gauge boson vertices can be consistently
parametrized in terms of a finite set of gauge invariant operators. We deal
here with those operators that do not give any tree level effect on present
experimental observables and constrain them by computing their effects at the
one-loop level. We conclude that for a light Higgs boson, the direct
measurement at LEP200 can improve present bounds on these "blind directions",
while for a heavy Higgs it is most unlikely to provide any new information.Comment: 17 pags. 2 figures not included, available on request. Latex. CERN-TH

Optimal Charge and Color Breaking conditions in the MSSM
In the MSSM, we make a careful tree-level study of Charge and Color Breaking
conditions in the plane , focusing on the top
quark scalar case. A simple and fast procedure to compute the VEVs of the
dangerous vacuum is presented and used to derive a model-independent optimal
CCB bound on . This bound takes into account all possible deviations of
the CCB vacuum from the D-flat directions. For large , it provides
a CCB maximal mixing for the stop scalar fields ,
which automatically rules out the Higgs maximal mixing . As a result, strong limits on the stop mass spectrum and a
reduction, in some cases substantial, of the one-loop upper bound on the
CP-even lightest Higgs boson mass, , are obtained. To incorporate one-loop
leading corrections, this tree-level CCB condition should be evaluated at an
appropriate renormalization scale which proves to be the SUSY scale.Comment: 41 pages, 7 eps figures, minor corrections, references added, to

Three Neutrino scales and Singular Seesaw Mechanism
It is shown that the singular seesaw mechanism can simultaneously explain all
the existing data supporting nonzero neutrino masses and mixing. The three
mass-squared differences that are needed to accommodate the atmospheric
neutrino data (through oscillation), the solar neutrino data
via MSW mechanism (through oscillation), and the positive
result of oscillation from LSND can be generated by this
mechanism, whereas the vacuum oscillation solution to the solar neutrino
problem is disfavored. We find that the electron and tau neutrino masses are of
order eV, and the muon neutrino and a sterile neutrino are almost
maximally mixed to give a mass of order 1 eV. Two heavy sterile neutrinos have
a mass of order 1 keV which can be obtained by the double seesaw mechanism with
an intermediate mass scale GeV. A possible origin of such a scale
is discussed.Comment: Revtex, 7 pages with 1 epsfig (uuencoded
The purpose of this master study was to review literature, which was discussing ante mortem and post mortem factors influencing meat quality in cattle. This thesis focuses on the effects of breed and age at slaughter time due to the amount of intramuscular fat (IMF), measured by NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), and to the tenderness, measured by Warner-Bratzler shear force (WB) in M. longissimus dorsi (LD), M. psoas major (PM) and M. Semitendinous (ST) in steers. The three muscles focused on in this study will henceforth be referred to as respectively LD, PM and ST. The thesis consists of two parts, one part which deals with theory and one part with own experiences. The results from tenderness measurements by WB will also be commented even though this practical accomplishment has not been a part of my study.
The experimental animals were 46 steers of 4 breed and crossbreeds; NRF, Angus x NRF, Angus x Jersey, and Jersey. These were separated in 8 groups (two groups for each breed), where half of the animals were slaughtered at 18 months of age, and the other half at 24 months of age. Daily amount of grain feed for animals slaughtered at 18 months of age was 3,5 kg, while for those slaughtered at 24 months of age it was 0,5 kg. All animals had silage ad libitum. The groups had respectively 1 and 2 summers at pasture. After slaughter the carcasses were classified using the EUROP-classification system before the muscles of interest was cut out and placed to tenderize.
The results from the NMR-analysis and WB shear force showed no significant effects of breed and age at slaughter time. Still there was a tendency for effect of breed on tenderness in LD (p = 0,0530).
Jersey and Angus x Jersey achieved a higher amount of IMF (mean values respectively for LD 6,28 % and 6,58 %, for PM 8,26 % and 7,24 %, and for ST 2,77 % and 2,85 %) compared to NRF and Angus x NRF (mean for LD 17 % and 5,29 %, for PM 5,94 % and 5,62 %, for ST 2,4 % and 2,33 %) PM and LD had a higher amount of fat than ST with respectively 6,76 %, 5,83 % and 2,58 %.
Jersey and Jersey x Angus seemed to have lower WBSF means (respectively for LD 42,92 N/cm2 and 50,38 N/cm2, for PM 32 N/cm2 and 33,43 N/cm2, for ST 50,84 N/cm2 and 49,1 N/cm2) than NRF and Angus x NRF (respectively for LD 49,84 N/cm2 and 53,18 N/cm2, for PM 33,98 N/cm2 and 35,63 N/cm2, for ST 52,93 N/cm2 and 54,3 N/cm2. PM got the lowest WB values with mean 33,76 N/cm2. LD and ST seemed both less tender (mean 49,1 N/cm2 og 51,78 N/cm2)
