    Influence of an external magnetic field on the decoherence of a central spin coupled to an antiferromagnetic environment

    Using the spin wave approximation, we study the decoherence dynamics of a central spin coupled to an antiferromagnetic environment under the application of an external global magnetic field. The external magnetic field affects the decoherence process through its effect on the antiferromagnetic environment. It is shown explicitly that the decoherence factor which displays a Gaussian decay with time depends on the strength of the external magnetic field and the crystal anisotropy field in the antiferromagnetic environment. When the values of the external magnetic field is increased to the critical field point at which the spin-flop transition (a first-order quantum phase transition) happens in the antiferromagnetic environment, the decoherence of the central spin reaches its highest point. This result is consistent with several recent quantum phase transition witness studies.     Recognizing Speech in a Novel Accent: The Motor Theory of Speech Perception Reframed

    The motor theory of speech perception holds that we perceive the speech of another in terms of a motor representation of that speech. However, when we have learned to recognize a foreign accent, it seems plausible that recognition of a word rarely involves reconstruction of the speech gestures of the speaker rather than the listener. To better assess the motor theory and this observation, we proceed in three stages. Part 1 places the motor theory of speech perception in a larger framework based on our earlier models of the adaptive formation of mirror neurons for grasping, and for viewing extensions of that mirror system as part of a larger system for neuro-linguistic processing, augmented by the present consideration of recognizing speech in a novel accent. Part 2 then offers a novel computational model of how a listener comes to understand the speech of someone speaking the listener's native language with a foreign accent. The core tenet of the model is that the listener uses hypotheses about the word the speaker is currently uttering to update probabilities linking the sound produced by the speaker to phonemes in the native language repertoire of the listener. This, on average, improves the recognition of later words. This model is neutral regarding the nature of the representations it uses (motor vs. auditory). It serve as a reference point for the discussion in Part 3, which proposes a dual-stream neuro-linguistic architecture to revisits claims for and against the motor theory of speech perception and the relevance of mirror neurons, and extracts some implications for the reframing of the motor theory

    Stream sediment analysis for Lithium (Li) exploration in the Douro region (Portugal): A comparative study of the spatial interpolation and catchment basin approaches

    Lithium (Li) was recently added to the list of critical raw materials by the European Union due to its significance for the green energy transition. Thus, the development of new toolchains to make Li exploration more economic and more effective is needed. Stream sediment analysis can play an important part in these new tool chains. In this work, two historical stream sediment datasets covering parts of the Fregeneda-Almendra pegmatite field in the Douro region (Portugal) were reprocessed considering two distinct approaches: spatial interpolation through inverse distance weighting (IDW) and the catchment basin approach using the concentration area (C-A) fractal analysis. The following objectives were delineated: (i) determine pathfinder elements for Li, considering relevant associations in the mineralization sources; (ii) compare the performance of both approaches; (iii) identify new target areas for Li. In the case of spatial interpolation, the highest Li values were associated to granites although the use of key elements allowed lithological discrimination and the delineation of target areas. In the catchment basin approach, fractal analysis proved to be effective in decreasing the number of areas of interest with high accuracy (>75%) when considering the previously mapped Li-pegmatites. One of the limitations identified was the number of anomalous basins related to the granites, despite the use of pathfinder elements allowing discriminating granite-from pegmatite-related Li anomalies. Comparing the two approaches, the spatial interpolation method is more adequate for the early stages of exploration (reconnaissance), while the catchment basin approach is more suited for prospect-scale exploration. Field validation of the results identified one pegmatite containing Li mineralization and three others with favorable signs for Li mineralization in the Douro region

    The Lyman-alpha forest at redshifts 0.1 -- 1.6: good agreement between a large hydrodynamic simulation and HST spectra

    We give a comprehensive statistical description of the Lyman-alpha absorption from the intergalactic medium in a hydrodynamic simulation at redshifts 0.1-1.6, the range of redshifts covered by HST spectra of QSOs. We use the ENZO code to make a 76 comoving Mpc cube simulation using 75 kpc cells, for a Hubble constant of 71 km/s/Mpc. The best prior work, by \citet{dave99},used an SPH simulation in a 15.6 Mpc box with an effective resolution of 245 kpc and slightly different cosmological parameters. At redshifts z=2 this simulation is different from data. \citet{tytler07b} found that the simulated spectra at z=2 have too little power on large scales, Lyman-alpha lines are too wide, there is a lack high column density lines, and there is a lack of pixels with low flux. Here we present statistics at z<1.6, including the flux distribution, the mean flux, the effective opacity, and the power and correlation of the flux. We also give statistics of the lyman alpha lines including the line width distribution, the column density distribution, the number of lines per unit equivalent width and redshift, and the correlation between the line width and column density. We find that the mean amount of absorption in the simulated spectra changes smoothly with redshift with DA(z)=0.01(1+z)^{2.25}. Both the trend and absolute values are close to measurements of HST spectra by \citet{kirkman07a}. The column density and line width distributions are also close to those measured from HST spectra by \citet{janknecht06a}, except for the mode of the line width distribution which is smaller in the HST spectra. Although some differences that we saw at z=2 are too subtle to be seen in existing HST spectra, overall, the simulation gives an good description of HST spectra at 0.1<z<1.6

    Management of Swallowing Disorders: A Program for Professionals Working in Rural Areas

    Research indicates that 74% of all nursing home patients experience eating difficulties sometime during their stay (Trupe, Siebens, & Siebens, 1984). Additionally, 59% of patients suffering from stroke experience some degree of dysphagia and aspiration difficulties (Echelard, Thoppil, & Melvin 1984). A significant number of the high risk dysphagia patients described above suffer from life threatening aspiration pneumonia. Consequently the management of swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) is of critical concern to hospital and nursing home personnel. Patients specficially at risk for dysphagia, according to recent studies, include those with head injury, stroke (CVA), and cerebral palsy. Also, patients experiencing cancer of the swallowing structures, diseases or disorders of the cranial nerves, and other neurological dysfuctions have been identified to be at increased risk. In rural areas, however, sophisticated diagnostic equipment that would facilitate dysphagia diagnosis is often unavailable. In addition, rural hospital and nursing home personnel (occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists and registered nurses) are often in a position to identify early signs of dysphagia but may not be trained in dysphagia identification or treatment. Consequently, it is imperative for these care providers to learn the screening skills necessary to identify dysphagia. When patients are identified as having, or being at an increased risk for, swallowing disorders are are treated accordingly, additional problems resulting from undiagnosed dysphagia may be prevented

    Este trabajo expone el diseño, desarrollo y evaluación de un software como apoyo docente en una materia de formación musical básica para futuros maestros generalistas. La evaluación del programa fue realizada por estudiantes de primer año del Grado de Maestro en Educación Primaria. Cumplimentaron un cuestionario que recogió sus opiniones (versatilidad, eficacia, facilidad de uso, calidad del entorno gráfico, adecuación, interés, facilitación del aprendizaje, feedback, funcionalidad) y percepciones sobre aspectos más generales (control, orientación, afectividad, consulta, verificación, seguimiento). Los resultados sugieren que el alumnado percibe EMOLab como herramienta de gran ayuda en el desarrollo de sus habilidades musicales

    Effect of mobile phase additives on solute retention at low aqueous pH in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography

Trifluoracetic acid (TFA) added to the aqueous acetonitrile mobile phase induces some unexpected changes in the ionic component of retention in hydrophilic interaction separations when using Type B silica and amide-bonded silica columns. TFA use results in anion exchange properties which contrast with the cation exchange typically found with ammonium salt buffers. The significant cation exchange properties of silica hydride columns are also moderated by TFA. Similar behaviour was shown in a metal- free amide column operated on a system washed with a metal complexing agent, suggesting that adsorbed metal cations were not responsible for this anion exchange behaviour. Both suppression of silanol ionisation at low pH and ion pairing of bases with TFA could contribute to this effect. It is also possible that the column surface acquires some positive charges at the low pH of TFA. A surprising reversal of the properties of the columns back to predominately cation exchange behaviour was shown using methanesulfonic acid (MSA), which appears to be a stronger acid than TFA in high concentrations of acetonitrile. MSA maintains sufficient ionic strength in the mobile phase even at low concentrations, giving good peak shape, which could be useful for mass spectrometry detection. Besides giving different selectivity to TFA, MSA also gives different selectivity to that of ammonium salt buffers, suggesting it may be useful in manipulating the selectivity of a separation. Similar changes to the selectivity with TFA could be achieved by adding neutral methylsulfonate salts to the TFA mobile phase. While it is possible that methylsulfonate ions are retained on the stationary phase surface, experiments using ion pair reagents of opposite charge yielded the same results as MSA salts. It therefore seems more likely that the higher ionic strength of these solutions negates the influence of charges that may be formed in TFA solutions.     Spin qubits with electrically gated polyoxometalate molecules

    Spin qubits offer one of the most promising routes to the implementation of quantum computers. Very recent results in semiconductor quantum dots show that electrically-controlled gating schemes are particularly well-suited for the realization of a universal set of quantum logical gates. Scalability to a larger number of qubits, however, remains an issue for such semiconductor quantum dots. In contrast, a chemical bottom-up approach allows one to produce identical units in which localized spins represent the qubits. Molecular magnetism has produced a wide range of systems with tailored properties, but molecules permitting electrical gating have been lacking. Here we propose to use the polyoxometalate [PMo12O40(VO)2]q-, where two localized spins-1/2 can be coupled through the electrons of the central core. Via electrical manipulation of the molecular redox potential, the charge of the core can be changed.     Receptor subtype‐dependent galanin actions on gamma‐aminobutyric acidergic neurotransmission and ethanol responses in the central amygdala

    The neuropeptide galanin and its three receptor subtypes (GalR1‐3) are expressed in the central amygdala (CeA), a brain region involved in stress‐ and anxiety‐related behaviors, as well as alcohol dependence. Galanin also has been suggested to play a role in alcohol intake and alcohol dependence. We examined the effects of galanin in CeA slices from wild‐type and knockout (KO) mice deficient of GalR2 and both GalR1 and GalR2 receptors. Galanin had dual effects on gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA)‐ergic transmission, decreasing the amplitudes of pharmacologically isolated GABAergic inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) in over half of CeA neurons but augmenting IPSPs in the others. The increase in IPSP size was absent after superfusion of the GalR3 antagonist SNAP 37889, whereas the IPSP depression was absent in CeA neurons of GalR1 × GalR2 double KO and GalR2 KO mice. Paired‐pulse facilitation studies showed weak or infrequent effects of galanin on GABA release. Thus, galanin may act postsynaptically through GalR3 to augment GABAergic transmission in some CeA neurons, whereas GalR2 receptors likely are involved in the depression of IPSPs. Co‐superfusion of ethanol, which augments IPSPs presynaptically, together with galanin caused summated effects of ethanol and galanin in those CeA neurons showing galanin‐augmented IPSPs, suggesting the two agents act via different mechanisms in this population. However, in neurons showing IPSP‐diminishing galanin effects, galanin blunted the ethanol effects, suggesting a preemptive effect of galanin.
