Many-core applications to online track reconstruction in HEP experiments
Interest in parallel architectures applied to real time selections is growing
in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. In this paper we describe performance
measurements of Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) and Intel Many Integrated Core
architecture (MIC) when applied to a typical HEP online task: the selection of
events based on the trajectories of charged particles. We use as benchmark a
scaled-up version of the algorithm used at CDF experiment at Tevatron for
online track reconstruction - the SVT algorithm - as a realistic test-case for
low-latency trigger systems using new computing architectures for LHC
experiment. We examine the complexity/performance trade-off in porting existing
serial algorithms to many-core devices. Measurements of both data processing
and data transfer latency are shown, considering different I/O strategies

Utilizing x-ray computed tomography for heritage conservation : the case of megalosaurus bucklandii
Of key importance to any cultural institution is the practice of conservation, the method by which specimens at risk of severe degradation or destruction are treated to ensure that they survive into the future. However, surface inspection is often insufficient to properly inform conservators of the best treatment approach, and where there is little to no record of the conservational history of an object it can be difficult to identify exactly what form of conservation has been undertaken. X-Ray Computed Tomography (XCT) grants a way to overcome these issues by allowing conservators to non-destructively investigate the subsurface details of an artefact to provide essential information on condition of a specimen. Here, the potential of this approach is demonstrated using the first XCT scans of the iconic dentary of Megalosaurus bucklandii Mantell, 1827 (1); the first dinosaur ever named and described scientifically. XCT analysis reveals that the degree of repair is less extensive than previously thought and also elucidates two different material types, M1 and M2, thought to be representative of at least two phases of repair. Finally the potential of this approach is further explored, highlighting its importance for conservation practice, identifying forgeries and hoaxes in addition to potential applications in public engagement
Proton Motive Force-Dependent Hoechst 33342 Transport by the ABC Transporter LmrA of Lactococcus lactis
The fluorescent compound Hoechst 33342 is a substrate for many multidrug resistance (MDR) transporters and is widely used to characterize their transport activity. We have constructed mutants of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) binding cassette (ABC)-type MDR transporter LmrA of Lactococcus lactis that are defective in ATP hydrolysis. These mutants and wild-type LmrA exhibited an atypical behavior in the Hoechst 33342 transport assay. In membrane vesicles, Hoechst 33342 transport was shown to be independent of the ATPase activity of LmrA, and it was not inhibited by orthovanadate but sensitive to uncouplers that collapse the proton gradient and to N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, an inhibitor of the F0F1-ATPase. In contrast, transport of Hoechst 33342 by the homologous, heterodimeric MDR transporter LmrCD showed a normal ATP dependence and was insensitive to uncouplers of the proton gradient. With intact cells, expression of LmrA resulted in an increased rate of Hoechst 33342 influx while LmrCD caused a decrease in the rate of Hoechst 33342 influx. Cellular toxicity assays using a triple knockout strain, i.e., L. lactis ΔlmrA ΔlmrCD, demonstrate that expression of LmrCD protects cells against the growth inhibitory effects of Hoechst 33342, while in the presence of LmrA, cells are more susceptible to Hoechst 33342. Our data demonstrate that the LmrA-mediated Hoechst 33342 transport in membrane vesicles is influenced by the transmembrane pH gradient due to a pH-dependent partitioning of Hoechst 33342 into the membrane.

REDUCE-IT USA: Results From the 3146 Patients Randomized in the United States.
BackgroundSome trials have found that patients from the United States derive less benefit than patients enrolled outside the United States. This prespecified REDUCE-IT (Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl - Intervention Trial) subgroup analysis was conducted to determine the degree of benefit of icosapent ethyl in the United States.MethodsREDUCE-IT randomized 8179 statin-treated patients with qualifying triglycerides ≥135 and <500 mg/dL and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol >40 and ≤100 mg/dL and a history of atherosclerosis or diabetes mellitus to icosapent ethyl 4 g/d or placebo. The primary composite end point was cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina. The key secondary composite end point was cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. A hierarchy was prespecified for examination of individual and composite end points.ResultsA total of 3146 US patients (38.5% of the trial) were randomized and followed for a median of 4.9 years; 32.3% were women and 9.7% were Hispanic. The primary composite end point occurred in 24.7% of placebo-treated patients versus 18.2% of icosapent ethyl-treated patients (hazard ratio [HR], 0.69 [95% CI, 0.59-0.80]; P=0.000001); the key secondary composite end point occurred in 16.6% versus 12.1% (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.57-0.83]; P=0.00008). All prespecified hierarchical end points were meaningfully and significantly reduced, including cardiovascular death (6.7% to 4.7%; HR, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.49-0.90]; P=0.007), myocardial infarction (8.8% to 6.7%; HR, 0.72 [95% CI, 0.56-0.93]; P=0.01), stroke (4.1% to 2.6%; HR, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.43-0.93]; P=0.02), and all-cause mortality (9.8% to 7.2%; HR, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.55-0.90]; P=0.004); for all-cause mortality in the US versus non-US patients, Pinteraction=0.02. Safety and tolerability findings were consistent with the full study cohort.ConclusionsWhereas the non-US subgroup showed significant reductions in the primary and key secondary end points, the US subgroup demonstrated particularly robust risk reductions across a variety of individual and composite end points, including all-cause mortality.Clinical trial registrationURL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Orbital Instabilities in a Triaxial Cusp Potential
This paper constructs an analytic form for a triaxial potential that
describes the dynamics of a wide variety of astrophysical systems, including
the inner portions of dark matter halos, the central regions of galactic
bulges, and young embedded star clusters. Specifically, this potential results
from a density profile of the form , where the radial
coordinate is generalized to triaxial form so that . Using the resulting analytic form of the potential, and the
corresponding force laws, we construct orbit solutions and show that a robust
orbit instability exists in these systems. For orbits initially confined to any
of the three principal planes, the motion in the perpendicular direction can be
unstable. We discuss the range of parameter space for which these orbits are
unstable, find the growth rates and saturation levels of the instability, and
develop a set of analytic model equations that elucidate the essential physics
of the instability mechanism. This orbit instability has a large number of
astrophysical implications and applications, including understanding the
formation of dark matter halos, the structure of galactic bulges, the survival

Silicone optical elements for cost-effective freeform solar concentration
The use of silicone optical elements is demonstrated for a concentrated photovoltaic system. These components show over 96% transmission through most of the solar spectrum and excellent temperature stability. Unique moldability enables the use of complex freeform designs. A light, compact, and cost-effective concentrated photovoltaic system based on silicone optics is proposed. In this system, air-plasma treatment is utilized to overcome the mechanical properties of silicone and difficulties with coating to reduce Fresnel loss. Lens arrays and waveguides are fabricated by injection molding following freeform optical design by LightTools. First-order characterizations are also performed. The Optical Alignment System of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer Endcaps
The muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN consists of over a thousand muon precision chambers, arranged in three concentrical cylinders in the barrel region, and in four wheels in each of the two endcaps. The endcap wheels are located between 7m and 22m from the interaction point, and have diameters between 13m and 24m. Muon chambers are equipped with a complex on-line optical alignment system to monitor their positions and deformations during ATLAS data-taking. We describe the layout of the endcap part of the alignment system and the design and calibration of the optical sensors, as well as the various software components. About 1% of the system has been subjected to performance tests in the H8 beam line at CERN, and results of these tests are discussed. The installation and commissioning of the full system in the ATLAS cavern is well underway, and results from approximately half of the system indicate that we will reach the ambitious goal of a 40mu alignment accuracy, required for reconstructing final-state muons at the highest expected energies
Direct Analysis of Spectra of the Unusual Type Ib Supernova 2005bf
Synthetic spectra generated with the parameterized supernova
synthetic-spectrum code SYNOW are compared to spectra of the unusual Type Ib
supernova 2005bf. We confirm the discovery by Folatelli et al. (2006) that very
early spectra (about 30 days before maximum light) contain both
photospheric-velocity (8000 km/s) features of He I, Ca II, and Fe II, and
detached high-velocity (14,000 km/s) features of H-alpha, Ca II, and Fe II. An
early spectrum of SN 2005bf is an almost perfect match to a near-maximum-light
spectrum of the Type Ib SN 1999ex. Although these two spectra were at very
different times with respect to maximum light (20 days before maximum for SN
2005bf and five days after for SN 1999ex), they were for similar times after
explosion - about 20 days for SN 2005bf and 24 days for SN 1999ex. The almost
perfect match clinches the previously suggested identification of H-alpha in SN
1999ex and supports the proposition that many if not all Type Ib supernovae
eject a small amount of hydrogen. The earliest available spectrum of SN 2005bf
resembles a near-maximum-light spectrum of the Type Ic SN 1994I. These two
spectra also were at different times with respect to maximum light (32 days
before maximum for SN 2005bf and four days before for SN 1994I) but at similar
times after explosion - about eight days for SN 2005bf and 10 days for SN
1994I. The resemblance motivates us to consider a reinterpretation of the
spectra of Type Ic supernovae, involving coexisting photospheric-velocity and
high-velocity features. The implications of our results for the geometry of the
SN 2005bf ejecta, which has been suggested to be grossly asymmetric, are

Observation of the Baryonic Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decay Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu-
We report the first observation of the baryonic flavor-changing neutral
current decay Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu- with 24 signal events and a
statistical significance of 5.8 Gaussian standard deviations. This measurement
uses ppbar collisions data sample corresponding to 6.8fb-1 at sqrt{s}=1.96TeV
collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. The total and
differential branching ratios for Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu- are measured. We
find B(Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu-) = [1.73+-0.42(stat)+-0.55(syst)] x 10^{-6}.
We also report the first measurement of the differential branching ratio of B_s
-> phi mu+ mu- using 49 signal events. In addition, we report branching ratios
for B+ -> K+ mu+ mu-, B0 -> K0 mu+ mu-, and B -> K*(892) mu+ mu- decays.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Evidence for t\bar{t}\gamma Production and Measurement of \sigma_t\bar{t}\gamma / \sigma_t\bar{t}
Using data corresponding to 6.0/fb of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
collected by the CDF II detector, we present a cross section measurement of
top-quark pair production with an additional radiated photon. The events are
selected by looking for a lepton, a photon, significant transverse momentum
imbalance, large total transverse energy, and three or more jets, with at least
one identified as containing a b quark. The ttbar+photon sample requires the
photon to have 10 GeV or more of transverse energy, and to be in the central
region. Using an event selection optimized for the ttbar+photon candidate
sample we measure the production cross section of, and the ratio of cross
sections of the two samples. Control samples in the dilepton+photon and
lepton+photon+\met, channels are constructed to aid in decay product
identification and background measurements. We observe 30 ttbar+photon
candidate events compared to the standard model expectation of 26.9 +/- 3.4
events. We measure the ttbar+photon cross section to be 0.18+0.08 pb, and the
ratio of the cross section of ttbar+photon to ttbar to be 0.024 +/- 0.009.
Assuming no ttbar+photon production, we observe a probability of 0.0015 of the
background events alone producing 30 events or more, corresponding to 3.0
