    The X-ray Outburst of H1743-322: High-Frequency QPOs with a 3:2 Frequency Ratio

    We observed the 2003 X-ray outburst of H1743-322 in a series of 130 pointed observation with RXTE. We searched individual observations for high-frequency QPOs (HFQPOs) and found only weak or marginal detections near 240 and 160 Hz. We next grouped the observations in several different ways and computed the average power-density spectra (PDS) in a search for further evidence of HFQPOs. This effort yielded two significant results for those observations defined by the presence of low-frequency QPOs (0.1-20 Hz) and an absence of ``band-limited'' power continua: (1) The 9 time intervals with the highest 7-35 keV count rates yielded an average PDS with a QPO at 166±5166 \pm 5 Hz. (4.1σ4.1 \sigma; 3--35 keV); and (2) a second group with lower 7-35 keV count rates (26 intervals) produced an average PDS with a QPO at 242±3242 \pm 3 Hz (6.0σ6.0 \sigma; 7--35 keV). The ratio of these two frequencies is 1.46±0.051.46 \pm 0.05. This finding is consistent with results obtained for three other black hole systems that exhibit commensurate HFQPOs in a 3:2 ratio. Furthermore, the occurrence of H1743-322's slower HFQPO at times of higher X-ray luminosity closely resembles the behavior of XTE J1550-564 and GRO J1655-40. We discuss our results in terms of a resonance model that invokes frequencies set by general relativity for orbital motions near a black-hole event horizon.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Ap

    A novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuation of gaseous detectors

    We have developed a novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuation of gaseous detectors using a UV laser. The technique is simple and requires a short data-taking time of about ten minutes. Furthermore, it is applicable for relatively low gas gains. Our experimental setup as well as the measurement principle, and the results obtained with a stack of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) operated in several gas mixtures are presented.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures.     X-ray Properties of Black-Hole Binaries

    We review the properties and behavior X-ray binaries that contain an accreting black hole. The larger majority of such systems are X-ray transients, and many of them were observed in daily pointings with RXTE throughout the course of their outbursts. The complex evolution of these sources is described in terms of common behavior patterns illustrated with comprehensive overview diagrams for six selected systems. Central to this comparison are three X-ray states of accretion, which are reviewed and defined quantitatively. Each state yields phenomena that arise in strong gravitational fields.     Biocompatibility and setting time of CPM-MTA and white Portland cement clinker with or without calcium sulfate

    To evaluate the biocompatibility and the setting time of Portland cement clinker with or without 2% or 5% calcium sulfate and MTA-CPM. Twenty-four mice (Rattus norvegicus) received subcutaneously polyethylene tubes filled with Portland cement clinker with or without 2% or 5% calcium sulfate and MTA. After 15, 30 and 60 days of implantation, the animals were killed and specimens were prepared for microscopic analysis. For evaluation of the setting time, each material was analyzed using Gilmore needles weighing 113.5 g and 456.5 g, according to the ASTM specification Number C266-08 guideline. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test for setting time and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test for biocompatibility at 5% significance level. Histologic observation showed no statistically significant difference of biocompatibility (p>0.05) among the materials in the subcutaneous tissues. For the setting time, clinker without calcium sulfate showed the shortest initial and final setting times (6.18 s/21.48 s), followed by clinker with 2% calcium sulfate (9.22 s/25.33 s), clinker with 5% calcium sulfate (10.06 s/42.46 s) and MTA (15.01 s/42.46 s). All the tested materials showed biocompatibility and the calcium sulfate absence shortened the initial and final setting times of the white Portland cement clinke

    A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

    For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figure

    The Effect of Volunteer Work in Hospitals: In a Brazilian University Hospital

    Na gestão das instituições de saúde, em especial das estruturas hospitalares, a hipótese de que o trabalho voluntário proporciona mais eficiência na assistência hospitalar é um pensamento comum ao longo da prática cotidiana dessas instituições. No entanto, faltam evidências quantitativas de apoio a esse argumento. Este artigo tem como objetivo identificar o efeito do trabalho voluntário na qualidade do atendimento, mais especificamente, o efeito na satisfação do usuário, na taxa média de permanência e na taxa de infecções hospitalares, em uma Instituição Hospitalar Universitária do Sul do Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo baseado em relatórios gerenciais internos, cujas análises foram realizadas por meio de regressões múltiplas, testes de normalidade de resíduos e testes de multicolinearidade. Os resultados apontam para dois indicadores claros da eficácia do trabalho voluntário: Taxa Média de Permanência e Taxa Média de Infecção Hospitalar. Ambos demonstram que, além de promover a humanização da assistência, o trabalho voluntário contribui para a qualidade da assistência à saúde no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS), long-term data tracking surgically induced effects of afterload reduction on reverse LV remodeling are not available. Echocardiographic data is available short term, but in limited fashion beyond one year. Cardiovascular MRI (CMR) offers the ability to serially track changes in LV metrics with small numbers due to its inherent high spatial resolution and low variability.</p> <p>Hypothesis</p> <p>We hypothesize that changes in LV structure and function following aortic valve replacement (AVR) are detectable by CMR and once triggered by AVR, continue for an extended period.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Tweny-four patients of which ten (67 ± 12 years, 6 female) with severe, but compensated AS underwent CMR pre-AVR, 6 months, 1 year and up to 4 years post-AVR. 3D LV mass index, volumetrics, LV geometry, and EF were measured.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All patients survived AVR and underwent CMR 4 serial CMR's. LVMI markedly decreased by 6 months (157 ± 42 to 134 ± 32 g/m<sup><b>2</b></sup>, p < 0.005) and continued trending downwards through 4 years (127 ± 32 g/m<sup><b>2</b></sup>). Similarly, EF increased pre to post-AVR (55 ± 22 to 65 ± 11%,(p < 0.05)) and continued trending upwards, remaining stable through years 1-4 (66 ± 11 vs. 65 ± 9%). LVEDVI, initially high pre-AVR, decreased post-AVR (83 ± 30 to 68 ± 11 ml/m2, p < 0.05) trending even lower by year 4 (66 ± 10 ml/m<sup><b>2</b></sup>). LV stroke volume increased rapidly from pre to post-AVR (40 ± 11 to 44 ± 7 ml, p < 0.05) continuing to increase non-significantly through 4 years (49 ± 14 ml) with these LV metrics paralleling improvements in NYHA. However, LVmass/volume, a 3D measure of LV geometry, remained unchanged over 4 years.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>After initial beneficial effects imparted by AVR in severe AS patients, there are, as expected, marked improvements in LV reverse remodeling. Via CMR, surgically induced benefits to LV structure and function are durable and, unexpectedly express continued, albeit markedly incomplete improvement through 4 years post-AVR concordant with sustained improved clinical status. This supports down-regulation of both mRNA and MMP activity acutely with robust suppression long term.</p
