    The role of stokvels in the economic transformation of Ethekwini municipality.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.The study explores the role that the stokvel industry plays in the economic transformation of eThekwini Municipality and their marginalisation in the economic policy framework. Stokvels in South Africa have an estimated value of R49 billion and a membership of 11,5 million individuals, in a country with an informal economy valued at R160 billion and populace of 55 million - yet remain a hidden sector of the economy. Developing the stokvel industry could be key to poverty alleviation, reduction of unemployment and broadening equitable access to the ownership of the economy and capital accumulation; thus improving the livelihoods and raising the standard of living in eThekwini. There was dearth in the consulted literature on the role of stokvels and a model for integrating stokvels into the economic policy framework of a municipality. The objectives of the study were to; determine the economic contribution factors of stokvels, investigate their role in the economic policy framework, explore the views of the stokvel groups and those of Municipality Council (as policy-makers) on the role of stokvels in the economic policy framework, and lastly, to develop a model for integrating stokvels into the economic framework of the municipality. The study used a mixed methods design. 395 stokvel groups’ respondents for the quantitative research were selected for a simple random probability sampling method. For qualitative research, six policymakers members were selected for the purposive non-probability sampling method. The triangulated thematic findings of the study revealed converging recurring themes of stokvels in eThekwini as; money saving and investment, job creation, business opportunities, marginalisation, an unorganised stokvel industry, lack of inclusion in the policy framework and a municipality lacking development and training initiatives for stokvels. Findings also revealed a market value of stokvel industry of eThekwini of R3,2 billion per annum. The findings also revealed that 82.5% of stokvel group members were women thus presenting an opportunity for the municipality to empower women through stokvels. Findings revealed that 80.4% of stokvels in the municipality are not registered with NASASA despite the gazetted exemption notice by SARB authorising stokvels to practice their trade under the Banking Act 94 of 1990. Existing theory from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs layered with the Hayes and Wheelwright’s four-stage model were theoretically triangulated to develop a new model for the integration of stokvels into the economic framework of eThekwini Municipality. The study recommended that the policy-makers of eThekwini adopt the integration of stokvels into the economic policy framework of the municipality, and recommended a development model for stokvels. Combined these model would use as enablers to tailor-make the training and development programs for stokvels and increase access for stokvels to municipality support services to promote their development and alignment with private sector; for the economic transformation, development and growth of the municipality

    Templated deprotonative metalation of polyaryl systems : facile access to simple, previously inaccessible multi-iodoarenes

    The development of new methodologies to affect non-ortho functionalization of arenes has emerged as a globally important arena for research, which is key to both fundamental studies and applied technologies. Here, a range of simple arene feedstocks (namely, biphenyl, meta-terphenyl, para-terphenyl, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene and biphenylene) are transformed to hitherto unobtainable multi-iodoarenes via a s-block metal sodium magnesiate templated deprotonative approach. These iodoarenes have potential to be used in a whole host of high impact transformations, as precursors to key materials in the pharmaceutical, molecular electronic and nanomaterials industries.     Pregnancy and childbirth in English prisons : institutional ignominy and the pains of imprisonment

Sociology of Health & Illness published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of Foundation for SHIL.With a prison population of approximately 9000 women in England, it is estimated that approximately 600 pregnancies and 100 births occur annually. Despite an extensive literature on the sociology of reproduction, pregnancy and childbirth among women prisoners is under‐researched. This article reports an ethnographic study in three English prisons undertaken in 2015‐2016, including interviews with 22 prisoners, six women released from prison and 10 staff members. Pregnant prisoners experience numerous additional difficulties in prison including the ambiguous status of a pregnant prisoner, physical aspects of pregnancy and the degradation of the handcuffed or chained prisoner during visits to the more public setting of hospital. This article draws on Erving Goffman's concepts of closed institutions, dramaturgy and mortification of self, Crewe et al.'s work on the gendered pains of imprisonment and Crawley's notion of ‘institutional thoughtlessness’, and proposes a new concept of institutional ignominy to understand the embodied situation of the pregnant prisoner.Peer reviewe

    Language difficulties and criminal justice: the need for earlier identification

    Background: At least 60% of young people in the UK who are accessing youth justice services present with speech, language and communication difficulties which are largely unrecognized. The contributing reasons for this are discussed, suggesting that early language difficulty is a risk factor for other problems such as literacy difficulties and educational failure that may increasingly put the young person at risk of offending. Opportunities for identification and remediation of language difficulties before young people reach youth justice services are also outlined. Aims: To examine language skills in a sample of children in a secure children's home aged 11–17 years. Methods & Procedures: A sample of 118 males were routinely assessed on four Comprehensive Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF) subtests and the British Picture Vocabulary Scale (BPVS). Outcomes & Results: Around 30% of the participants presented with language difficulties scoring 1.5 SD (standard deviation) below the mean on the assessments. Despite them entering the home because their vulnerability was recognized, only two participants had a previous record of language difficulties. A total of 20% of the participants had a diagnosis of mental illness, 50% had a history of drug abuse and 31% had looked‐after status prior to entry to the home. Conclusions & implications: Children experiencing educational or emotional difficulties need to be routinely assessed for speech, language and communication difficulties. More population‐based approaches to supporting the development of oral language skills in children and young people are also supported

    Comparisons of Aerosol Generation Across Different Musical Instruments and Loudness

COVID-19 severely impacted the performing arts due to concerns about disease spread by respiratory aerosols and droplets generated during singing and playing musical instruments. Aerosol generation from woodwind and brass performance is less understood compared to singing due to uncertainty about how the diverse range of musical instruments may impact respiratory aerosol concentrations and size distributions. Here, aerosol number and mass concentrations along with size distributions were measured for breathing, speaking, and playing four different woodwind and brass instruments by 23 professional instrumentalists. We find that a 1 dBA increase in sound pressure level corresponds to a ∌10% increase in aerosol number concentration. The aerosol size distribution is consistent with that of breathing. Differences in aerosol emission across musical instruments can be partly explained by the loudness of performance. Measuring aerosol generation from single notes or simple songs may be sufficient to characterise the aerosol emission range during actual performance, provided a range of loudnesses are accessed. These results provide insight into the factors contributing to aerosol emission during musical performance and facilitate risk assessments associated with infectious respiratory disease transmission in the performing arts

    Treating age-related multimorbidity:the drug discovery challenge

    Patients with multimorbidities have shorter life expectancy and their clinical management is more complex and expensive for healthcare systems currently focused on treating single diseases. Given that age is the major risk factor for multimorbidity, the challenge of treating these patients will only increase in coming years. Here, we review the case for targeting the core processes that drive the ageing phenotype as a novel pharmaceutical approach to multimorbidity. There is growing evidence that targeting ageing mechanisms can reduce or delay age-related diseases in animal models, and the first reports of clinical trials are now appearing. Although these trials currently focus on repurposed drugs, we propose several novel targets that would more specifically target ageing processes and thereby reduce multimorbidity and polypharmacy in future generations

    A Mediterranean Diet and Walking Intervention to Reduce Cognitive Decline and Dementia Risk in Independently Living Older Australians:The MedWalk Randomized Controlled Trial Experimental Protocol, Including COVID-19 Related Modifications and Baseline Characteristics.

    Background:Several clinical trials have examined diet and physical activity lifestyle changes as mitigation strategies for risk factors linked to cognitive decline and dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. However, the ability to modify these behaviors longer term, to impact cognitive health has remained elusive.Objective:The MedWalk trial’s primary aim is to investigate whether longer-term adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet and regular walking, delivered through motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral therapy (MI-CBT), can reduce age-associated cognitive decline and other dementia risk factors in older, independently living individuals without cognitive impairment.Methods:MedWalk, a one-year cluster-randomized controlled trial across two Australian states, recruited 60–90-year-old people from independent living retirement villages and the wider community. Participants were assigned to either the MedWalk intervention or a control group (maintaining their usual diet and physical activity). The primary outcome is 12-month change in visual memory and learning assessed from errors on the Paired Associates Learning Task of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. Secondary outcomes include cognition, mood, cardiovascular function, biomarkers related to nutrient status and cognitive decline, MI-CBT effectiveness, Mediterranean diet adherence, physical activity, quality of life, cost-effectiveness, and health economic evaluation.Progress and Discussion:Although COVID-19 impacts over two years necessitated a reduced timeline and sample size, MedWalk retains sufficient power to address its aims and hypotheses. Baseline testing has been completed with 157 participants, who will be followed over 12 months. If successful, MedWalk will inform interventions that could substantially reduce dementia incidence and ameliorate cognitive decline in the community.<br/

    The Dark Side of Transfer Pricing: Its Role in Tax Avoidance and Wealth Retentiveness

    In conventional accounting literature, ?transfer pricing? is portrayed as a technique for optimal allocation of costs and revenues amongst divisions, subsidiaries and joint ventures within a group of related entities. Such representations of transfer pricing simultaneously acknowledge and occlude how it is deeply implicated in processes of wealth retentiveness that enable companies to avoid taxes and facilitate the flight of capital. A purely technical conception of transfer pricing calculations abstracts them from the politico-economic contexts of their development and use. The context is the modern corporation in an era of globalized trade and its relationship to state tax authorities, shareholders and other possible stakeholders. Transfer pricing practices are responsive to opportunities for determining values in ways that are consequential for enhancing private gains, and thereby contributing to relative social impoverishment, by avoiding the payment of public taxes. Evidence is provided by examining some of the transfer prices practices used by corporations to avoid taxes in developing and developed economies
