participar no projeto.
Conclusão: As
Introduction: The population’s aging and alterations in lifestyle that society has been
experienced induce the increase of chronic diseases, such as type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Many
of these diseases are going unnoticed due to the silence of their symptoms, which sometimes
causes a feeling of indifference concerning these diseases. The beliefs about medicines that
diabetics feel, both in the sense of ‘necessity’ as the ‘concern’, have repercussions in disease’s
control, which is not always reached like expected. Aim: Inserted in a larger study to evaluate
how the type 2 diabetics’ knowledge about diabetes, beliefs about medicines and medication
adherence influence their disease’s control, aiming to optimize the pharmacist’s intervention,
the specific objective of this monograph was to characterize the beliefs about medicines of the
patients who took part in this study and to analyze in which way these beliefs have influence
over the medication adherence and, consequently, the diabetes’ control of these individuals.
Methodology: This study took place in pharmacies of the district of Coimbra. The
participants in this study were individuals who came to these pharmacies, in a specific time,
asking for a non-insulin antidiabetic and accepted to participate in this project. After signing
informed consent, they were asked to fill in 3 questionnaires about their knowledge on the
disease, beliefs about medicines (BMQ-specific questionnaire) and medication adherence.
Then, the values of glycated hemoglobin, blood pressure and abdominal circumference were
measured. Finally, the information about their chronic medication was registered. Results:
The BMQ-specific questionnaire revealed that diabetic women have concern beliefs about
their medication higher than men, which leads to the surging of less positive beliefs about
medicines. Patients with higher medication adherence show more positive beliefs in
comparison to patients with low adherence, obtained ‘necessity-concerns’ differential of
2,91±5,05 and 2,08±5,21, respectively. No association was found between more positive
beliefs and lower HbA1c values. There are 23% of participants who do not have their diabetes
controlled. Conclusion: More positive beliefs about medicines – believing in their necessity
and decreasing the importance given to their negatives aspects – tend to result in a higher
medication adherence, which is one of the factors that can contribute to a better diabetes’
control

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone
As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
