    16.3 Are Visual Motion Perception and Detection of Animacy Critical to Higher-Order Social Cognitive Function in Schizophrenia?

    Background The observation that individuals with schizophrenia tend to misinterpret subtle social cues is often attributed to deficit in Theory of Mind (ToM). While ToM is commonly assessed using videos portraying interaction between actors, recent work in vision science shows that stimuli with no innate animate features can also convey similar social information through motion alone. These simplified stimuli are advantageous for experimental purposes and may provide further insights into perceptual mechanisms supporting social cognitive function. The Social Attribution Task-Multiple Choice (SAT-MC), based on the classic Hieder and Simmel (1944) stimuli, tells a story using three geometric shapes moving about a centrally fixed figure, followed by questions about what the viewer observed. Although there are no explicit social cues, viewers typically detect actions suggestive of relationships between objects, their intentions, and emotions. This talk will present findings from three studies examining psychometric, functional, and neurophysiological aspects on SAT -MC performance in schizophrenia. Methods Study 1 examined psychometric properties of two forms of the SAT-MC in comparison to video-based social cognitive tests using human actors in 32 schizophrenia (SZ) and 30 substance use disorder (SUD) participants. Study 2 examined functional relationships of the SAT-MC and affect recognition (BLERT) performance across neurocognitive, metacognitive, ToM, and symptom domains in 72 adults with SZ. Study 3 is an in-progress investigation of neurophysiological mechanisms of social cognition using test versions adapted for EEG recording. Chronic SZ, clinical high-risk (CHR), and healthy age-matched community samples are being collected. Results SZ scored significantly lower than SUD on two versions of the SAT-MC, each classifying ~60% of SZ as impaired, compared with ~30% of SUD. The two SAT-MC forms demonstrated good test-retest and parallel form reliability, minimal practice effect, high internal consistency, similar patterns of correlation with social cognitive test performance, and compared favorably to social cognitive tests across psychometric features. When examining functional correlates of SAT -MC performance, impairment is found to co-occur with deficits in affect recognition in the majority of cases but relates uniquely to reductions in verbal memory and emotional intelligence measures. Finally, a preliminary analysis (n=8 SZ, n=2 CHR) of EEG collected during SAT-MC video presentation finds significant correlations (r=.66-.72) between occipito-parietal gamma desynchronization and task performance. Additional analyses find task-related EEG during SAT to be predictive of affect recognition (BLERT) and ToM (TASIT) performance, with correlates including alpha desynchronization in frontal, occipital, and temporal regions, and synchronization of temporal theta and occipital gamma (all r > .5). Conclusions SAT-MC performance is found to be reliable using different stimuli, related to affect recognition and ToM in three independent samples, and shows high diagnostic specificity in classifying SZ against a SUD sample. Functional correlates also involve encoding and emotional intelligence abilities tested outside the visual modality. Analysis of neural oscillatory activity related SAT-MC performance to visual and attention processes, as well as engagement of a broader social cognitive network applied to affect recognition and ToM tasks. Impairment in visual motion processing appears integral to schizophrenia pathophysiology and a critical factor influencing social cognitive abilities attributed to higher-order ToM ability

    International perceptions of an integrated, multi-sectoral, ecosystem approach to management:Editor’s Choice

    Abstract The Ecosystem Approach to Management (EAM) has emerged over the past decades, largely to promote biodiversity conservation, and more recently sectoral tradeoffs in the management of marine ecosystems. To ascertain the state of practice of EAM operationalization, a workshop was held, which included a pre-workshop online survey. The survey gauged international participants’ perspectives regarding capacity, knowledge, and application of EAM. When asked about the subject, most survey respondents had a general understanding of EAM, and provided a clear definition. Major perceived challenges to EAM objectives by those surveyed included limited knowledge, conflicting interests, insufficient communication, and limited organizational legal frameworks or governance structures. Of those directly involved in an ecosystem approach, the majority responded that processes were in place or developed for application of integrated knowledge toward assessing key issues within their respective sectors (i.e. fisheries, conservation, energy), and that capacity was generally high. Our results show that most respondents, irrespective of sector or geography, see value in considering an integrated, broader ecosystem approach as they manage their sector. Although many participants were from the North Atlantic region, our results suggest that much of the international community is converging toward continued understanding of broad-scale, integrated approaches to marine resource management.</jats:p

    Ocean ecosystem-based management mandates and implementation in the North Atlantic

    Ecosystem-based management (EBM) necessarily requires a degree of coordination across countries that share ocean ecosystems, and among national agencies and departments that have responsibilities relating to ocean health and marine resource utilization. This requires political direction, legal input, stakeholder consultation and engagement, and complex negotiations. Currently there is a common perception that within and across national jurisdictions there is excessive legislative complexity, a relatively low level of policy coherence or alignment with regards to ocean and coastal EBM, and that more aligned legislation is needed to accelerate EBM adoption. Our Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA) task group was comprised of a small, focused and interdisciplinary mix of lawyers, social scientists, and natural scientists from Canada, the USA, and the EU. We characterized, compared, and synthesized the mandates that govern marine activities and ocean stressors relative to facilitating EBM in national and international waters of the North Atlantic, and identified formal mandates across jurisdictions and, where possible, policy and other non-regulatory mandates. We found that irrespective of the detailed requirements of legislation or policy across AORA jurisdictions, or the efficacy of their actual implementation, most of the major ocean pressures and uses posing threats to ocean sustainability have some form of coverage by national or regional legislation. The coverage is, in fact, rather comprehensive. Still, numerous impediments to effective EBM implementation arise, potentially relating to the lack of integration between agencies and departments, a lack of adequate policy alignment, and a variety of other socio-political factors. We note with concern that if challenges regarding EBM implementation exist in the North Atlantic, we can expect that in less developed regions where financial and governance capacity may be lower, that implementation of EBM could be even more challenging

The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes

    Between-site reliability of startle prepulse inhibition across two early psychosis consortia

    Prepulse inhibition (PPI) and reactivity of the acoustic startle response are widely used biobehavioral markers in psychopathology research. Previous studies have demonstrated that PPI and startle reactivity exhibit substantial within-site stability; between-site stability, however, has not been established. In two separate consortia investigating biomarkers of early psychosis, traveling subjects studies were performed as part of quality assurance procedures in order to assess the fidelity of data across sites. In the North American Prodromal Longitudinal Studies (NAPLS) Consortium, 8 normal subjects traveled to each of the 8 NAPLS sites and were tested twice at each site on the startle PPI paradigm. In preparation for a binational study, 10 healthy subjects were assessed twice in both San Diego and Mexico City. Intraclass correlations between and within sites were significant for PPI and startle response parameters, confirming the reliability of startle measures across sites in both consortia. There were between site differences in startle magnitude in the NAPLS study that did not appear to be related to methods or equipment. In planning multi-site studies, it is essential to institute quality assurance procedures early and establish between site reliability to assure comparable data across sites

    Cancer data quality and harmonization in Europe: the experience of the BENCHISTA Project – international benchmarking of childhood cancer survival by stage

    IntroductionVariation in stage at diagnosis of childhood cancers (CC) may explain differences in survival rates observed across geographical regions. The BENCHISTA project aims to understand these differences and to encourage the application of the Toronto Staging Guidelines (TG) by Population-Based Cancer Registries (PBCRs) to the most common solid paediatric cancers.MethodsPBCRs within and outside Europe were invited to participate and identify all cases of Neuroblastoma, Wilms Tumour, Medulloblastoma, Ewing Sarcoma, Rhabdomyosarcoma and Osteosarcoma diagnosed in a consecutive three-year period (2014-2017) and apply TG at diagnosis. Other non-stage prognostic factors, treatment, progression/recurrence, and cause of death information were collected as optional variables. A minimum of three-year follow-up was required. To standardise TG application by PBCRs, on-line workshops led by six tumour-specific clinical experts were held. To understand the role of data availability and quality, a survey focused on data collection/sharing processes and a quality assurance exercise were generated. To support data harmonization and query resolution a dedicated email and a question-and-answers bank were created.Results67 PBCRs from 28 countries participated and provided a maximally de-personalized, patient-level dataset. For 26 PBCRs, data format and ethical approval obtained by the two sponsoring institutions (UCL and INT) was sufficient for data sharing. 41 participating PBCRs required a Data Transfer Agreement (DTA) to comply with data protection regulations. Due to heterogeneity found in legal aspects, 18 months were spent on finalizing the DTA. The data collection survey was answered by 68 respondents from 63 PBCRs; 44% of them confirmed the ability to re-consult a clinician in cases where stage ascertainment was difficult/uncertain. Of the total participating PBCRs, 75% completed the staging quality assurance exercise, with a median correct answer proportion of 92% [range: 70% (rhabdomyosarcoma) to 100% (Wilms tumour)].ConclusionDifferences in interpretation and processes required to harmonize general data protection regulations across countries were encountered causing delays in data transfer. Despite challenges, the BENCHISTA Project has established a large collaboration between PBCRs and clinicians to collect detailed and standardised TG at a population-level enhancing the understanding of the reasons for variation in overall survival rates for CC, stimulate research and improve national/regional child health plans

    Event-related potential paradigms are widely studied in the search for biological endophenotypes of schizophrenia. Abnormalities observed on two of these measures, P50 suppression and P300 generation, are considered some of the most reliable and robust effects in the schizophrenia literature, and appear to aggregate within affected families and high-risk groups. Evidence for similar findings in bipolar disorder, however, warrants more systematic evaluation before proposals regarding a genetic overlap with schizophrenia can be entertained. In the current study, the diagnostic efficiency of candidate endophenotypes for schizophrenia (SZ; n = 84) was tested in classification analyses including healthy normal (HN; n = 81) and bipolar disorder (BP; n = 50) comparison groups. P50 suppression and P300 amplitude values were scored according to conventional procedures. Spectral power and hemispheric asymmetry measures were used to assess evoked-response activity within functionally discrete frequency bands, and at electrode sites more proximal to bilateral temporal generators. Values were entered as predictors in multivariate regression models designed to optimize sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic classifications. Seventy-nine percent classification accuracy of SZ against HN, and 64% against BP, was achieved using a derived multivariate model. These values reflected a substantial improvement in diagnostic specificity over that achieved by standard P50 and P300 amplitude measures. A meaningful distinction in profiles was observed between BP, characterized by impairment in late stages of information processing (e.g., novelty detection, encoding) and SZ, characterized by a combination of these deficits with earlier, sensory-related, processing abnormalities. Interpretations of results regarding diagnostic overlap and differentiation of model parameters are discussed

They often exist in a seemingly sacred space, outside the hustle and bustle of the everyday. At their most basic level, iconic sports venues are revered and idolized. They emanate a sense of persuasion that contributes to how they become meaningful for those who come into contact with them. This book examines how and why iconic sports venues acquire meaning. Looking at different venues, chapters address how the material features of a site participate in the construction of messages and meanings, and how they influence those messages and meanings. Each chapter includes a description of the venue in question; an interpretation of its mystique; and a discussion of the implications of the interpretation. A unique and timely contribution to the fields of composition, persuasion, sport management, sport rhetoric, and communication, the goal of this book is to inspire more scholarly research, essays, and projects focused on the persuasive qualities of sports venues.     Neural Network Potentials for Reactive Chemistry: CASPT2 Quality Potential Energy Surfaces for Bond Breaking

    Neural Network potentials are developed which accurately make and break bonds for use in molecular simulations. We report a neural network potential that can describe the potential energy surface for carbon-carbon bond dissociation with less than 1 kcal/mol error compared to complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), and maintains this accuracy for both the minimum energy path and molecular dynamic calculations up to 2000K. We utilize a transfer learning algorithm to develop neural network potentials to generate potential energy surfaces; this method aims to use the minimum amount of CASPT2 data on small systems to train neural network potentials while maintaining excellent transferability to larger systems. First, we generate homolytic carbon-carbon bond dissociation data of small size alkanes with density functional theory (DFT) energies to train the potentials to accurately predict bond dissociation at the DFT level. Then, using transfer learning, we retrained the neural network potential to CASPT2 level of accuracy. We demonstrate that the neural network potential only requires bond dissociation data of a few small alkanes to accurately predict bond dissociation energy in larger alkanes. We then perform additional training on molecular dynamic simulations to refine our neural network potentials to obtain high accuracy for general use in molecular simulation. This training algorithm is generally applicable to any type of bond or any level of theory and will be useful for the generation of new reactive neural network potentials

    Bile Duct Adenoma with Oncocytic Features

    Bile duct adenomas are benign bile duct proliferations usually encountered as an incidental finding. Oncocytic bile duct neoplasms are rare and the majority are malignant. A 61-year-old male with a diagnosis of colorectal adenocarcinoma was undergoing surgery when a small white nodule was discovered on the surface of the right lobe of his liver. This lesion was composed of cytologically bland cells arranged in tightly packed glands. These cells were immunopositive for cytokeratin 7, negative for Hep Par 1, contained mucin, and had a Ki67 proliferation index of 8%. The morphology, immunophenotype, presence of mucin, and normal appearing bile ducts, as well as the increased Ki67 proliferation rate, were consistent with a bile duct adenoma with oxyphilic (oncocytic) change. Oncocytic tumors in the liver are rare; the first described in 1992. Only two bile duct adenomas with oncocytic change have been reported and neither of them had reported mucin production or the presence of normal appearing bile ducts within the lesion
