Integrating hot and cool intelligences: Thinking Broadly about Broad Abilities
Although results from factor-analytic studies of the broad, second-stratum abilities of human intelligence have been fairly consistent for decades, the list of broad abilities is far from complete, much less understood. We propose criteria by which the list of broad abilities could be amended and envision alternatives for how our understanding of the hot intelligences (abilities involving emotionally-salient information) and cool intelligences (abilities involving perceptual processing and logical reasoning) might be integrated into a coherent theoretical framework
Dependence of Self-Assembled Peptide Hydrogel Network Structure on Local Fibril Nanostructure
Physically cross-linked, fibrillar hydrogel networks are formed by the self-assembly of β-hairpin peptide molecules with varying degrees of strand asymmetry. The peptide registry in the self-assembled state can be used as a design element to generate fibrils with twisting, nontwisting, or laminated morphology. The mass density of the networks varies significantly, and can be directly related to the local fibrillar morphology as evidenced by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and in situ substantiation using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) under identical concentrations and conditions. Similarly, the density of the network is dependent on changes in the peptide concentration. Bulk rheological properties of the hydrogels can be correlated to the fibrillar nanostructure, with the stiffer, laminated fibrils forming networks with a higher G′ as compared to the flexible, singular fibrillar networks
Stochastic bias of colour-selected BAO tracers by joint clustering-weak lensing analysis
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the two-point correlation
function of galaxies supplies a standard ruler to probe the expansion history
of the Universe. We study here several galaxy selection schemes, aiming at
building an emission-line galaxy (ELG) sample in the redshift range
, that would be suitable for future BAO studies, providing a highly
biased galaxy sample. We analyse the angular galaxy clustering of galaxy
selections at the redshifts 0.5, 0.7, 0.8, 1 and 1.2 and we combine this
analysis with a halo occupation distribution (HOD) model to derive the
properties of the haloes these galaxies inhabit, in particular the galaxy bias
on large scales. We also perform a weak lensing analysis (aperture statistics)
to extract the galaxy bias and the cross-correlation coefficient and compare to
the HOD prediction.
We apply this analysis on a data set composed of the photometry of the deep
co-addition on Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 (225 deg), of
Canda-France-Hawai Telescope/Stripe 82 deep \emph{i}-band weak lensing survey
and of the {\it Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer}infrared photometric band
W1.
The analysis on the SDSS-III/constant mass galaxies selection at is
in agreement with previous studies on the tracer, moreover we measure its
cross-correlation coefficient . For the higher redshift bins, we
confirm the trends that the brightest galaxy populations selected are strongly
biased (), but we are limited by current data sets depth to derive
precise values of the galaxy bias. A survey using such tracers of the mass

The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey : cosmological implications of the full shape of the clustering wedges in the data release 10 and 11 galaxy samples
We explore the cosmological implications of the angle-averaged correlation function, ξ(s), and the clustering wedges, ξ⊥(s) and ξ∥(s), of the LOWZ and CMASS galaxy samples from Data Releases 10 and 11 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. Our results show no significant evidence for a deviation from the standard Λ cold dark matter model. The combination of the information from our clustering measurements with recent data from the cosmic microwave background is sufficient to constrain the curvature of the Universe to Ωk = 0.0010 ± 0.0029, the total neutrino mass to ∑mν < 0.23 eV (95 per cent confidence level), the effective number of relativistic species to Neff = 3.31 ± 0.27 and the dark energy equation of state to wDE = −1.051 ± 0.076. These limits are further improved by adding information from Type Ia supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations from other samples. In particular, this data set combination is completely consistent with a time-independent dark energy equation of state, in which case we find wDE = −1.024 ± 0.052. We explore the constraints on the growth rate of cosmic structures assuming f(z) = Ωm(z)γ and obtain γ = 0.69 ± 0.15, consistent with the predictions of general relativity of γ = 0.55.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: single-probe measurements from CMASS anisotropic galaxy clustering
With the largest spectroscopic galaxy survey volume drawn from the SDSS-III
Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), we can extract cosmological
constraints from the measurements of redshift and geometric distortions at
quasi-linear scales (e.g. above 50 Mpc). We analyze the broad-range
shape of the monopole and quadrupole correlation functions of the BOSS Data
Release 12 (DR12) CMASS galaxy sample, at the effective redshift , to
obtain constraints on the Hubble expansion rate , the angular-diameter
distance , the normalized growth rate , and the
physical matter density . We obtain robust measurements by
including a polynomial as the model for the systematic errors, and find it
works very well against the systematic effects, e.g., ones induced by stars and
seeing. We provide accurate measurements ,

where is the comoving sound horizon at the drag epoch and
Mpc is the sound scale of the fiducial cosmology used in
this study. The parameters which are not well constrained by our galaxy
clustering analysis are marginalized over with wide flat priors. Since no
priors from other data sets, e.g., cosmic microwave background (CMB), are
adopted and no dark energy models are assumed, our results from BOSS CMASS
galaxy clustering alone may be combined with other data sets, i.e., CMB, SNe,
lensing or other galaxy clustering data to constrain the parameters of a given
cosmological model. The uncertainty on the dark energy equation of state
parameter, , from CMB+CMASS is about 8 per cent. The uncertainty on the
curvature fraction, , is 0.3 per cent. We do not find deviation from

We review some recent lessons learned for charging tests of composite materials using both parallel-plate and electron beam test geometries. We also discuss examples of materials that exhibit significant variations between samples, despite them all having the same trade name
