Parity and Time Reversal in the Spin-Rotation Interaction

A recently reported discrepancy between experimental and theoretical values of the muon's g-2 factor is interpreted as due to small violations of the conservation of P and T in the spin-rotation coupling. The experiments place an upper limit on these violations and on the weight change of spinning gyroscopes.Comment: 3 page

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ÎČ\beta in B0→J/ψπ+π−B^0\rightarrow J/\psi \pi^+\pi^- decays and limits on penguin effects

Time-dependent CP violation is measured in the B0→J/ψπ+π−B^0\rightarrow J/\psi\pi^+\pi^- channel for each π+π−\pi^+\pi^- resonant final state using data collected with an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} in pppp collisions using the LHCb detector. The final state with the largest rate, J/ψρ0(770)J/\psi\rho^0(770), is used to measure the CP-violating angle 2ÎČeff2\beta^{\rm eff} to be (41.7±9.6−6.3+2.8)∘(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contributions to CP violation measurements in, for example, Bs0→J/ψϕB_s^0\rightarrow J/\psi\phi decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavour symmetry and neglecting higher order diagrams, the shift in the CP-violating phase ϕs\phi_s is limited to be within the interval [−1.05∘-1.05^\circ, +1.18∘1.18^\circ] at 95% confidence level. Changes to the limit due to SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures; v2-updated from reviewers comments and added a figur

The intrinsic mechanical loss factor of hydroxy-catalysis bonds for use in the mirror suspensions of gravitational wave detectors

No full text
This paper describes investigations into the mechanical losses of bonds created by hydroxy-catalysis bonding. Evaluation of the magnitude of such losses is important for determining thermal noise levels in bonded suspensions for gravitational wave detectors. Three samples were investigated with bonds of varying geometries and surface areas. In two cases, the bonds were between two pieces of fused silica, whilst in the third a fused silica piece was attached to a sapphire substrate. In each case sodium silicate solution was used as the bonding agent. The thickness and Young's modulus of the bond material were evaluated enabling values for the intrinsic mechanical loss factor of the bonding material to be obtained

Ein Blick Down Under. Selbstmanagementinitiativen und Patientenschulungen in Australien

The growing burden of chronic disease and the current nature of healthcare systems which are structurally ill-equipped to cater to the complex needs of patients with chronic conditions has led to governments and healthcare providers seeking alternative ways to improve patients own capacity to actively self-manage their chronic condition. In Australia, there has been a focus on patient education and self-management programs within the healthcare system to achieve this. These programs aim to empower patients through providing information and teaching skills and techniques to improve self-care and doctor-patient interaction with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life. Patient education and self-management programs have been supported through several national government initiatives and implemented within the healthcare setting. This paper describes the current position of patient education and self-management within the Australian healthcare system. It further describes a new collaboration project between an Australian and a German research team which aims at translating an assessment questionnaire used in Australia for the evaluation of self-management programs, the “Health Education Impact Questionnaire” (“heiQ”); this instrument is expected to be of significant use in the German rehabilitative system.<br /
