    Dynamics of liquid He-4 in confined geometries from Time-Dependent Density Functional calculations

    We present numerical results obtained from Time-Dependent Density Functional calculations of the dynamics of liquid He-4 in different environments characterized by geometrical confinement. The time-dependent density profile and velocity field of He-4 are obtained by means of direct numerical integration of the non-linear Schrodinger equation associated with a phenomenological energy functional which describes accurately both the static and dynamic properties of bulk liquid He-4. Our implementation allows for a general solution in 3-D (i.e. no symmetries are assumed in order to simplify the calculations). We apply our method to study the real-time dynamics of pure and alkali-doped clusters, of a monolayer film on a weakly attractive surface and a nano-droplet spreading on a solid surface.Comment: q 1 tex file + 9 Ps figure

    A local infrared perspective to deeper ISO surveys

    We present new techniques to produce IRAS 12 micron samples of galaxies andstars. We show that previous IRAS 12 micron samples are incompatible fordetailed comparison with ISO surveys and review their problems. We provide astellar infrared diagnostic diagram to distinguish galaxies from stars withoutusing longer wavelength IRAS colour criteria and produce complete 12 micronsamples of galaxies and stars. This new technique allows us to estimate thecontribution of non-dusty galaxies to the IRAS 12 micron counts and produce atrue local mid-infrared extragalactic sample compatible with ISO surveys.     Herschel-ATLAS: The angular correlation function of submillimetre galaxies at high and low redshift

Careful removal of the background from galactic cirrus is essential, and currently dominates the uncertainty in our measurements. For our 250 Ī¼m-selected sample we detect no significant clustering, consistent with the expectation that the 250 Ī¼m-selected sources are mostly normal galaxies at z 1. For our 350 Ī¼m and 500 Ī¼m-selected samples we detect relatively strong clustering with correlation amplitudes A of 0.2 and 1.2 at 1', but with relatively large uncertainties. For samples which preferentially select high redshift galaxies at z~2ā€“3 we detect significant strong clustering, leading to an estimate of r0 ~ 7ā€“11 h-1 Mpc. The slope of our clustering measurements is very steep, Ī“ ~ 2. The measurements are consistent with the idea that sub-mm sources consist of a low redshift population of normal galaxies and a high redshift population of highly clustered star-bursting galaxies.Peer reviewe

    From nonwetting to prewetting: the asymptotic behavior of 4He drops on alkali substrates

    We investigate the spreading of 4He droplets on alkali surfaces at zero temperature, within the frame of Finite Range Density Functional theory. The equilibrium configurations of several 4He_N clusters and their asymptotic trend with increasing particle number N, which can be traced to the wetting behavior of the quantum fluid, are examined for nanoscopic droplets. We discuss the size effects, inferring that the asymptotic properties of large droplets correspond to those of the prewetting film

    Accounting for the impact of conservation on human well-being

    Conservationists are increasingly engaging with the concept of human well-being to improve the design and evaluation of their interventions. Since the convening of the influential Sarkozy Commission in 2009, development researchers have been refining conceptualizations and frameworks to understand and measure human well-being and are starting to converge on a common understanding of how best to do this. In conservation, the term human well-being is in widespread use, but there is a need for guidance on operationalizing it to measure the impacts of conservation interventions on people. We present a framework for understanding human well-being, which could be particularly useful in conservation. The framework includes 3 conditions; meeting needs, pursuing goals, and experiencing a satisfactory quality of life. We outline some of the complexities involved in evaluating the well-being effects of conservation interventions, with the understanding that well-being varies between people and over time and with the priorities of the evaluator. Key challenges for research into the well-being impacts of conservation interventions include the need to build up a collection of case studies so as to draw out generalizable lessons; harness the potential of modern technology to support well-being research; and contextualize evaluations of conservation impacts on well-being spatially and temporally within the wider landscape of social change. Pathways through the smog of confusion around the term well-being exist, and existing frameworks such as the Well-being in Developing Countries approach can help conservationists negotiate the challenges of operationalizing the concept. Conservationists have the opportunity to benefit from the recent flurry of research in the development field so as to carry out more nuanced and locally relevant evaluations of the effects of their interventions on human well-being

    Luminosity functions for galaxies and quasars in the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey

    We construct rest-frame luminosity functions (LFs) at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8 and 24 Ī¼m over the redshift range 0 < z < 2 for galaxies and 0 < z < 4 for optical quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), using optical and infrared (IR) data from the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) Survey. The 3.6- and 4.5-Ī¼m galaxy LFs show evidence for moderate positive luminosity evolution up to zāˆ¼ 1.5, consistent with the passive ageing of evolved stellar populations. Their comoving luminosity density was found to evolve passively, gradually increasing out to zāˆ¼ 0.5ā€“1 but flattening, or even declining, at higher redshift. Conversely, the 24-Ī¼m galaxy LF, which is more sensitive to obscured star formation and/or active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, undergoes strong positive evolution, with the derived IR energy density and star formation rate (SFR) density āˆ (1 +z)Ī³ with Ī³= 4.5+0.7āˆ’0.6 and the majority of this evolution occurring since zāˆ¼ 1. Optical QSOs, however, show positive luminosity evolution in all bands, out to the highest redshifts (3 < z < 4). Modelling as L*āˆ (1 +z)Ī³ gave Ī³= 1.3+0.1āˆ’0.1 at 3.6 Ī¼m, Ī³= 1.0+0.1āˆ’0.1 at 4.5 Ī¼m and stronger evolution at the longer wavelengths (5.8, 8 and 24 Ī¼m), of Ī³āˆ¼ 3. Comparison of the galaxy LFs to predictions from a semi-analytic model based on cold dark matter (CDM) indicates that an initial mass function (IMF) skewed towards higher mass star formation in bursts compared to locally be preferred. As a result, the currently inferred massive SFRs in distant submm sources may require substantial downwards revision

    Virus infection and grazing exert counteracting influences on survivorship of native bunchgrass seedlings competing with invasive exotics

    1. ā€‚Invasive annual grasses introduced by European settlers have largely displaced native grassland vegetation in California and now form dense stands that constrain the establishment of native perennial bunchgrass seedlings. Bunchgrass seedlings face additional pressures from both livestock grazing and barley and cereal yellow dwarf viruses (B/CYDVs), which infect both young and established grasses throughout the state. 2. ā€‚Previous work suggested that B/CYDVs could mediate apparent competition between invasive exotic grasses and native bunchgrasses in California. 3. ā€‚To investigate the potential significance of virus-mediated mortality for early survivorship of bunchgrass seedlings, we compared the separate and combined effects of virus infection, competition and simulated grazing in a field experiment. We infected two species of young bunchgrasses that show different sensitivity to B/CYDV infection, subjected them to competition with three different densities of exotic annuals crossed with two clipping treatments, and monitored their growth and first-year survivorship. 4. ā€‚Although virus infection alone did not reduce first-year survivorship, it halved the survivorship of bunchgrasses competing with exotics. Within an environment in which competition strongly reduces seedling survivorship (as in natural grasslands), virus infection therefore has the power to cause additional seedling mortality and alter patterns of establishment. 5. ā€‚Surprisingly, clipping did not reduce bunchgrass survivorship further, but rather doubled it and disproportionately increased survivorship of infected bunchgrasses. 6. ā€‚Together with previous work, these findings show that B/CYDVs can be potentially powerful elements influencing species interactions in natural grasslands. 7. ā€‚More generally, our findings demonstrate the potential significance of multitrophic interactions in virus ecology.
