Salicylaldehyde hydrazones: buttressing of outer sphere hydrogen-bonding and copper-extraction properties
Salicylaldehyde hydrazones are weaker copper extractants than their oxime derivatives, which are used in hydrometallurgical processes to recover ~20 % of the world’s copper. Their strength, based on the extraction equilibrium constant Ke, can be increased by nearly three orders of magnitude by incorporating electron-withdrawing or hydrogen-bond acceptor groups (X) ortho to the phenolic OH group of the salicylaldehyde unit. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the effects of the 3-X substituents arise from a combination of their influence on the acidity of the phenol in the pH-dependent equilibrium, Cu2+ + 2Lorg ⇌ [Cu(L–H)2]org + 2H+, and on their ability to ‘buttress’ interligand hydrogen bonding by interacting with the hydrazone N–H donor group. X-ray crystal structure determination and computed structures indicate that in both the solid state and the gas phase, coordinated hydrazone groups are less planar than coordinated oximes and this has an adverse effect on intramolecular hydrogen-bond formation to the neighbouring phenolate oxygen atoms
Association between canine leishmaniosis and Ehrlichia canis co-infection: a prospective case-control study
Abstract Background In the Mediterranean basin, Leishmania infantum is a major cause of disease in dogs, which are frequently co-infected with other vector-borne pathogens (VBP). However, the associations between dogs with clinical leishmaniosis (ClinL) and VBP co-infections have not been studied. We assessed the risk of VBP infections in dogs with ClinL and healthy controls. Methods We conducted a prospective case-control study of dogs with ClinL (positive qPCR and ELISA antibody for L. infantum on peripheral blood) and clinically healthy, ideally breed-, sex- and age-matched, control dogs (negative qPCR and ELISA antibody for L. infantum on peripheral blood) from Paphos, Cyprus. We obtained demographic data and all dogs underwent PCR on EDTA-blood extracted DNA for haemoplasma species, Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp., Babesia spp., and Hepatozoon spp., with DNA sequencing to identify infecting species. We used logistic regression analysis and structural equation modelling (SEM) to evaluate the risk of VBP infections between ClinL cases and controls. Results From the 50 enrolled dogs with ClinL, DNA was detected in 24 (48%) for Hepatozoon spp., 14 (28%) for Mycoplasma haemocanis, 6 (12%) for Ehrlichia canis and 2 (4%) for Anaplasma platys. In the 92 enrolled control dogs, DNA was detected in 41 (45%) for Hepatozoon spp., 18 (20%) for M. haemocanis, 1 (1%) for E. canis and 3 (3%) for A. platys. No Babesia spp. or “Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum” DNA was detected in any dog. No statistical differences were found between the ClinL and controls regarding age, sex, breed, lifestyle and use of ectoparasitic prevention. A significant association between ClinL and E. canis infection (OR = 12.4, 95% CI: 1.5–106.0, P = 0.022) was found compared to controls by multivariate logistic regression. This association was confirmed using SEM, which further identified that younger dogs were more likely to be infected with each of Hepatozoon spp. and M. haemocanis, and dogs with Hepatozoon spp. were more likely to be co-infected with M. haemocanis. Conclusions Dogs with ClinL are at a higher risk of co-infection with E. canis than clinically healthy dogs. We recommend that dogs diagnosed with ClinL should be tested for E. canis co-infection using PCR
The transition into adoptive parenthood: adoption as a process of continued unsafe uncertainty when family scripts collide
Our prospective study investigated couples’ expectations of adoptive parenthood and explored how these changed with their actual experience of parenthood. Six heterosexual couples were interviewed just before placement began and six months after the children had arrived. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyse both sets of interview data. Expectations of adoptive parenthood mostly transformed smoothly into adoption experience for couples but challenges were experienced when family scripts collided and a continued feeling of unsafe uncertainty then prevailed within these newly formed family systems. Family script collision seemed a particular problem for couples adopting sibling pairs. To further professional practice in working with families over the transition to adoptive parenting we suggest that professionals keep in mind a framework that includes: Internal and external world influences on family members, Intergenerational issues, Family scripts, and the Structural challenges of adoption (IIFS)
'Surely the most natural scenario in the world’: Representations of ‘Family’ in BBC Pre-school Television
Historically, the majority of work on British children’s television has adopted either an institutional or an audience focus, with the texts themselves often overlooked. This neglect has meant that questions of representation in British children’s television – including issues such as family, gender, class or ethnicity - have been infrequently analysed in the UK context. In this article, we adopt a primarily qualitative methodology and analyse the various textual manifestations of ‘family’, group, or community as represented in a selected number of BBC pre-school programmes. In doing so, we question the (limited amount of) international work that has examined representations of the family in children’s television, and argue that nuclear family structures do not predominate in this sphere
Effective viscosity from cloud-cloud collisions in three-dimensional global SPH simulations
Analytic estimates of the viscous time-scale due to cloud-cloud collisions
have been as high as thousands of Gyr. Consequently, cloud collisions are
widely ignored as a source of viscosity in galactic disks. However, capturing
the hydrodynamics of discs in simple analytic models is a challenge, both
because of the wide dynamic range and importance of 2D and 3D effects. To test
the validity of analytic models we present estimates for the viscous time-scale
that are measured from three dimensional SPH simulations of disc formation and
evolution. We have deliberately removed uncertainties associated with
star-formation and feedback thereby enabling us to place lower bounds on the
time-scale for this process. We also contrast collapse simulations with results
from simulations of initially stable discs and examine the impact of numerical
parameters and assumptions on our work, to constrain possible systematics in
our estimates. We find that cloud-collision viscous time-scales are in the
range of 0.6-16 Gyr, considerably shorter than previously estimated. This large
discrepency can be understood in terms of how the efficiency of collisions is
included in the analytical estimates. We find that the viscous time-scale only
depends weakly on the number of clouds formed, and so while the viscous
time-scale will increase with increasing resolution, this effect is too weak to

The Global Evolution of Giant Molecular Clouds II: The Role of Accretion
We present virial models for the global evolution of giant molecular clouds.
Focusing on the presence of an accretion flow, and accounting for the amount of
mass, momentum, and energy supplied by accretion and star formation feedback,
we are able to follow the growth, evolution, and dispersal of individual giant
molecular clouds. Our model clouds reproduce the scaling relations observed in
both galactic and extragalactic clouds. We find that accretion and star
formation contribute contribute roughly equal amounts of turbulent kinetic
energy over the lifetime of the cloud. Clouds attain virial equilibrium and
grow in such a way as to maintain roughly constant surface densities, with
typical surface densities of order 50 - 200 Msun pc^-2, in good agreement with
observations of giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way and nearby external
galaxies. We find that as clouds grow, their velocity dispersion and radius
must also increase, implying that the linewidth-size relation constitutes an
age sequence. Lastly, we compare our models to observations of giant molecular
clouds and associated young star clusters in the LMC and find good agreement
between our model clouds and the observed relationship between H ii regions,

Young people's uses of celebrity: Class, gender and 'improper' celebrity

Drawing on data from three studies in England on young people's perspectives on their educational and work futures, we show how celebrity operates as a classed and gendered discursive device within young people's identity work. We illustrate how young people draw upon class and gender distinctions that circulate within celebrity discourses (proper/improper, deserving/undeserving, talented/talentless and respectable/tacky) as they construct their own identities in relation to notions of work, aspiration and achievement. We argue that these distinctions operate as part of neoliberal demands to produce oneself as a ‘subject of value’. However, some participants produced readings that show ambivalence and even resistance to these dominant discourses. Parenting desires, parenting intentions, and anticipation of stigma upon parenthood among lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual women in Portugal
We explored parenting desires, parenting intentions, and anticipation of stigma upon parenthood in a sample of 257 self-identified lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual childfree women in Portugal. No differences between the groups were observed concerning parenting desires. However, lesbian and bisexual women reported lower intentions to have children than their heterosexual counterparts. Although lesbian women considered themselves to have a higher chance of being victims of social stigma as mothers, this was not associated with their parenting desires. Furthermore, younger lesbian women intended to have children to a greater extent than did older lesbian women; relational status did not relate to lesbian women’s parenting intentions, desires, or anticipation of stigma. Overall, this study contributes to knowledge about family formation processes among Portuguese women diverse in sexual identity
Composition, structure and stability of RuO_2(110) as a function of oxygen pressure
Using density-functional theory (DFT) we calculate the Gibbs free energy to
determine the lowest-energy structure of a RuO_2(110) surface in thermodynamic
equilibrium with an oxygen-rich environment. The traditionally assumed
stoichiometric termination is only found to be favorable at low oxygen chemical
potentials, i.e. low pressures and/or high temperatures. At realistic O
pressure, the surface is predicted to contain additional terminal O atoms.
Although this O excess defines a so-called polar surface, we show that the
prevalent ionic model, that dismisses such terminations on electrostatic
grounds, is of little validity for RuO_2(110). Together with analogous results
obtained previously at the (0001) surface of corundum-structured oxides, these
findings on (110) rutile indicate that the stability of non-stoichiometric

Control of hyperglycaemia in paediatric intensive care (CHiP): study protocol.
BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that tight blood glucose (BG) control improves outcomes in critically ill adults. Children show similar hyperglycaemic responses to surgery or critical illness. However it is not known whether tight control will benefit children given maturational differences and different disease spectrum. METHODS/DESIGN: The study is an randomised open trial with two parallel groups to assess whether, for children undergoing intensive care in the UK aged <or= 16 years who are ventilated, have an arterial line in-situ and are receiving vasoactive support following injury, major surgery or in association with critical illness in whom it is anticipated such treatment will be required to continue for at least 12 hours, tight control will increase the numbers of days alive and free of mechanical ventilation at 30 days, and lead to improvement in a range of complications associated with intensive care treatment and be cost effective. Children in the tight control group will receive insulin by intravenous infusion titrated to maintain BG between 4 and 7.0 mmol/l. Children in the control group will be treated according to a standard current approach to BG management. Children will be followed up to determine vital status and healthcare resources usage between discharge and 12 months post-randomisation. Information regarding overall health status, global neurological outcome, attention and behavioural status will be sought from a subgroup with traumatic brain injury (TBI). A difference of 2 days in the number of ventilator-free days within the first 30 days post-randomisation is considered clinically important. Conservatively assuming a standard deviation of a week across both trial arms, a type I error of 1% (2-sided test), and allowing for non-compliance, a total sample size of 1000 patients would have 90% power to detect this difference. To detect effect differences between cardiac and non-cardiac patients, a target sample size of 1500 is required. An economic evaluation will assess whether the costs of achieving tight BG control are justified by subsequent reductions in hospitalisation costs. DISCUSSION: The relevance of tight glycaemic control in this population needs to be assessed formally before being accepted into standard practice
