GMOS Spectroscopy of SCUBA Galaxies Behind A851
We have identified counterparts to two submillimeter (submm) sources, SMM
J09429+4659 and SMM J09431+4700, seen through the core of the z=0.41 cluster
Abell 851. We employ deep 1.4-GHz observations and the far-infrared/radio
correlation to refine the submm positions and then optical and near-infrared
imaging to locate their counterparts. We identify an extremely red counterpart
to SMM J09429+4659, while GMOS spectroscopy with Gemini-North shows that the
R=23.8 radio source identified with SMM J09431+4700 is a hyperluminous infrared
galaxy (L_FIR~1.5x10^13 L_sun) at z=3.35, the highest spectroscopic redshift so
far for a galaxy discovered in the submm. The emission line properties of this
galaxy are characteristic of a narrow-line Seyfert-1, although the lack of
detected X-ray emission in a deep XMM-Newton observation suggests that the bulk
of the luminosity of this galaxy is derived from massive star formation. We
suggest that active nuclei, and the outflows they engender, may be an important
part of the evolution of the brightest submm galaxies at high redshifts.Comment: to appear in the Oct 1 issue of ApJ Letter
Results on Finite Density QCD
A brief summary of the formulation of QCD at finite chemical potental, ,
is presented. The failure of the quenched approximation to the problem is
reviewed.
Results are presented for dynamical simulations of the theory at strong and
intermediate couplings. We find that the problems associated with the quenched
theory persist: the onset of non-zero quark number does seem to occur at a
chemical potential . However analysis of the
Lee-Yang zeros of the grand canonical partition function in the complex
fugacity plane, (), does show signals of critical behaviour in the
expected region of chemical potential.
Results are presented for a simulation at finite density of the Gross-Neveu
model on a lattice near to the chiral limit. Contrary to our simulations
of QCD no pathologies were found when passed through the value

Multicolour correlative imaging using phosphor probes
Correlative light and electron microscopy exploits the advantages of optical methods, such as multicolour probes and their use in hydrated live biological samples, to locate functional units, which are then correlated with structural details that can be revealed by the superior resolution of electron microscopes. One difficulty is locating the area imaged by the electron beam in the much larger optical field of view. Multifunctional probes that can be imaged in both modalities and thus register the two images are required. Phosphor materials give cathodoluminescence (CL) optical emissions under electron excitation. Lanthanum phosphate containing thulium or terbium or europium emits narrow bands in the blue, green and red regions of the CL spectrum; they may be synthesised with very uniform-sized crystals in the 10- to 50-nm range. Such crystals can be imaged by CL in the electron microscope, at resolutions limited by the particle size, and with colour discrimination to identify different probes. These materials also give emissions in the optical microscope, by
multiphoton excitation. They have been deposited on the surface of glioblastoma cells and imaged by CL. Gadolinium oxysulphide doped with terbium emits green photons by either ultraviolet or electron excitation. Sixty-nanometre crystals of this phosphor have been imaged in the atmospheric scanning electron microscope (JEOL ClairScope). This probe and microscope combination allow correlative imaging in hydrated samples. Phosphor probes should prove to be very useful in correlative light and electron microscopy, as fiducial
markers to assist in image registration, and in high/super resolution imaging studies
Group Averaging of massless scalar fields in 1+1 de Sitter
Perturbative gravity in global de Sitter space is subject to so-called
linearization stability constraints: If they are to couple consistently to the
gravitational field, quantum states must be invariant under the de Sitter
isometries. While standard Fock spaces contain no de Sitter-invariant states
apart from (possibly) the vacuum, a full Hilbert space of de Sitter-invariant
quantum states can be constructed via group averaging techiniques. We
re-examine the simple toy model of de Sitter group averaging given by the free
1+1 scalar field, expanding on an earlier analysis by Higuchi. Our purpose is
twofold: to include the scalar zero-mode, and to explicitly count the number of

Human settlement of East Polynesia earlier, incremental, and coincident with prolonged South Pacific drought
The timing of human colonization of East Polynesia, a vast area lying between Hawai‘i, Rapa Nui, and New Zealand, is much debated and the underlying causes of this great migration have been enigmatic. Our study generates evidence for human dispersal into eastern Polynesia from islands to the west from around AD 900 and contemporaneous paleoclimate data from the likely source region. Lake cores from Atiu, Southern Cook Islands (SCIs) register evidence of pig and/or human occupation on a virgin landscape at this time, followed by changes in lake carbon around AD 1000 and significant anthropogenic disturbance from c. AD 1100. The broader paleoclimate context of these early voyages of exploration are derived from the Atiu lake core and complemented by additional lake cores from Samoa (directly west) and Vanuatu (southwest) and published hydroclimate proxies from the Society Islands (northeast) and Kiribati (north). Algal lipid and leaf wax biomarkers allow for comparisons of changing hydroclimate conditions across the region before, during, and after human arrival in the SCIs. The evidence indicates a prolonged drought in the likely western source region for these colonists, lasting c. 200 to 400 y, contemporaneous with the phasing of human dispersal into the Pacific. We propose that drying climate, coupled with documented social pressures and societal developments, instigated initial eastward exploration, resulting in SCI landfall(s) and return voyaging, with colonization a century or two later. This incremental settlement process likely involved the accumulation of critical maritime knowledge over several generations
Topology by Design in Magnetic nano-Materials: Artificial Spin Ice
Artificial Spin Ices are two dimensional arrays of magnetic, interacting
nano-structures whose geometry can be chosen at will, and whose elementary
degrees of freedom can be characterized directly. They were introduced at first
to study frustration in a controllable setting, to mimic the behavior of spin
ice rare earth pyrochlores, but at more useful temperature and field ranges and
with direct characterization, and to provide practical implementation to
celebrated, exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics previously devised
to gain an understanding of degenerate ensembles with residual entropy. With
the evolution of nano--fabrication and of experimental protocols it is now
possible to characterize the material in real-time, real-space, and to realize
virtually any geometry, for direct control over the collective dynamics. This
has recently opened a path toward the deliberate design of novel, exotic
states, not found in natural materials, and often characterized by topological
properties. Without any pretense of exhaustiveness, we will provide an
introduction to the material, the early works, and then, by reporting on more
recent results, we will proceed to describe the new direction, which includes

The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE): Mission Description and Initial On-orbit Performance
The all sky surveys done by the Palomar Observatory Schmidt, the European
Southern Observatory Schmidt, and the United Kingdom Schmidt, the InfraRed
Astronomical Satellite and the 2 Micron All Sky Survey have proven to be
extremely useful tools for astronomy with value that lasts for decades. The
Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer is mapping the whole sky following its
launch on 14 December 2009. WISE began surveying the sky on 14 Jan 2010 and
completed its first full coverage of the sky on July 17. The survey will
continue to cover the sky a second time until the cryogen is exhausted
(anticipated in November 2010). WISE is achieving 5 sigma point source
sensitivities better than 0.08, 0.11, 1 and 6 mJy in unconfused regions on the
ecliptic in bands centered at wavelengths of 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 microns.
Sensitivity improves toward the ecliptic poles due to denser coverage and lower
zodiacal background. The angular resolution is 6.1, 6.4, 6.5 and 12.0
arc-seconds at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 microns, and the astrometric precision for

Early versus Later Rhythm Analysis in Patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest
Background
In a departure from the previous strategy of immediate defibrillation, the 2005 resuscitation guidelines from the American Heart Association–International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation suggested that emergency medical service (EMS) personnel could provide 2 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before the first analysis of cardiac rhythm. We compared the strategy of a brief period of CPR with early analysis of rhythm with the strategy of a longer period of CPR with delayed analysis of rhythm.
Methods
We conducted a cluster-randomized trial involving adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest at 10 Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium sites in the United States and Canada. Patients in the early-analysis group were assigned to receive 30 to 60 seconds of EMS-administered CPR and those in the later-analysis group were assigned to receive 180 seconds of CPR, before the initial electrocardiographic analysis. The primary outcome was survival to hospital discharge with satisfactory functional status (a modified Rankin scale score of ≤3, on a scale of 0 to 6, with higher scores indicating greater disability).
Results
We included 9933 patients, of whom 5290 were assigned to early analysis of cardiac rhythm and 4643 to later analysis. A total of 273 patients (5.9%) in the later-analysis group and 310 patients (5.9%) in the early-analysis group met the criteria for the primary outcome, with a cluster-adjusted difference of −0.2 percentage points (95% confidence interval, −1.1 to 0.7; P=0.59). Analyses of the data with adjustment for confounding factors, as well as subgroup analyses, also showed no survival benefit for either study group.
Conclusions
Among patients who had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, we found no difference in the outcomes with a brief period, as compared with a longer period, of EMS-administered CPR before the first analysis of cardiac rhythm. Large-scale genome-wide association studies and meta-analyses of longitudinal change in adult lung function.
BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous loci influencing cross-sectional lung function, but less is known about genes influencing longitudinal change in lung function.
METHODS: We performed GWAS of the rate of change in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) in 14 longitudinal, population-based cohort studies comprising 27,249 adults of European ancestry using linear mixed effects model and combined cohort-specific results using fixed effect meta-analysis to identify novel genetic loci associated with longitudinal change in lung function. Gene expression analyses were subsequently performed for identified genetic loci. As a secondary aim, we estimated the mean rate of decline in FEV1 by smoking pattern, irrespective of genotypes, across these 14 studies using meta-analysis.
RESULTS: The overall meta-analysis produced suggestive evidence for association at the novel IL16/STARD5/TMC3 locus on chromosome 15 (P  =  5.71 × 10(-7)). In addition, meta-analysis using the five cohorts with ≥3 FEV1 measurements per participant identified the novel ME3 locus on chromosome 11 (P  =  2.18 × 10(-8)) at genome-wide significance. Neither locus was associated with FEV1 decline in two additional cohort studies. We confirmed gene expression of IL16, STARD5, and ME3 in multiple lung tissues. Publicly available microarray data confirmed differential expression of all three genes in lung samples from COPD patients compared with controls. Irrespective of genotypes, the combined estimate for FEV1 decline was 26.9, 29.2 and 35.7 mL/year in never, former, and persistent smokers, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: In this large-scale GWAS, we identified two novel genetic loci in association with the rate of change in FEV1 that harbor candidate genes with biologically plausible functional links to lung function
