    The mechanism of maternal mitochondrial inheritance in animals involves the selective elimination of sperm mitochondria by the elimination factor of the egg and the sperm mitochondria-specific factor. In vitro fertilization using sperm from isogenic mice incorporating heterospecific mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) showed that the number of PCR positives of sperm mtDNA in two-cell embryos was significantly increased following sperm incubation with anti-tetratricopeptide repeat-containing protein involved in spermatogenesis (tpis) protein, anti-translocator of mitochondrial outer membrane (Tom) 22 and anti-Tom40 antibodies. The treatment of fertilized eggs with EGTA and other endonuclease inhibitors increased the sperm mtDNA levels. We conclude that the elimination factor, which is probably an endonuclease, is selectively received by the tpis protein of the sperm mitochondrial outer membrane within the egg. It is then transported into the sperm mitochondria by Tom22 and Tom40, where it destroys the sperm mtDNA, establishing the maternal inheritance of mtDNA.The Version of Record (VoR) is available at http://www.cellbiolint.or

    The Objective of this study is to know influence of nurse therapeutic communication to satisfaction of patients satisfaction in RSUD Yogyakarta. The study was a quantitative research methods such as surveys of descriptive inferential research with cross sectional approach. Number of samples in this research is 285 sample in inpatient and 140 in emergency room. The instrument used a questionnaire. Analysis of data using multiple linear regression. This study show that there is the influence of therapeutic communication nurse to satisfaction of outpatients and Emergency room in RSUD Yogyakarta, and orientation phase is a phase that most influence on patient satisfaction. The most influential to therapeutic communication is termination stage

    Beyond water homeostasis:diverse functional roles of mammalian aquaporins

    Background - Aquaporin (AQP) water channels are best known as passive transporters of water that are vital for water homeostasis. Scope of review - AQP knockout studies in whole animals and cultured cells, along with naturally occurring human mutations suggest that the transport of neutral solutes through AQPs has important physiological roles. Emerging biophysical evidence suggests that AQPs may also facilitate gas (CO2) and cation transport. AQPs may be involved in cell signalling for volume regulation and controlling the subcellular localization of other proteins by forming macromolecular complexes. This review examines the evidence for these diverse functions of AQPs as well their physiological relevance. Major conclusions - As well as being crucial for water homeostasis, AQPs are involved in physiologically important transport of molecules other than water, regulation of surface expression of other membrane proteins, cell adhesion, and signalling in cell volume regulation. General significance - Elucidating the full range of functional roles of AQPs beyond the passive conduction of water will improve our understanding of mammalian physiology in health and disease. The functional variety of AQPs makes them an exciting drug target and could provide routes to a range of novel therapies

    川崎医科大学は,中核市の倉敷市内と政令指定都市の岡山市内に二つの附属病院を有している。両病院の卒後臨床研修プログラムは独立しているが,研修は両方の病院の診療科から選択することが可能である。平成27年7月,初めて川崎医科大学生を対象にした大学附属病院診療科の説明会をブース形式で学内開催した。研修プログラム説明会とは趣を異にし,各診療科の特徴や業務内容を広報することを目的とした。1年生から6年生までの学生が参加し,アンケート調査に回答した52名全員が将来の研修病院の選択に役に立ったと答え,うち27%は非常に役立ったと高い満足度を示した。また,研修医だけで計画した学生向けのミニシンポジウムも同時に開催し,来場した約70%の学生が参加し貴重な情報収集の場となった。次年度以降も改善を加えながら,学生が身近に附属病院スタッフや先輩研修医と交流できるイベントとして育てていきたい。Kawasaki Medical School has one hospital in Kurashiki City, a core city, and another in Okayama City, an ordinance-designated city. These hospitals have independent postgraduate clinical training programs. However, departments of both hospitals can be selected for training. In July 2015, a boothtype meeting regarding Kawasaki Medical School Hospital departments was held for Kawasaki Medical School students for the first time. The intent of the meeting differed from that of other training program meetings, and its goal was to provide information on the characteristics and tasks of each department. First- to sixth-year students participated in the meeting. All 52 students who responded to a questionnaire survey answered that the meeting was useful in helping them select a hospital for their future training, and 27% of them reported that the meeting was very useful and showed high levels of satisfaction. A mini symposium for students planned only by residents was also held at the same time. About 70% of visiting students participated in the symposium and were given a valuable opportunity to gather information. By making improvements, we will cultivate the meeting as an event in which students can have contact with hospital staff and junior residents from the next year

    Cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a novel and effective treatment strategy for several types of cancer. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have recently demonstrated impressive clinical benefit in some advanced cancers. Nonetheless, in the majority of patients, the successful use of ICIs is limited by a low response rate, high treatment cost, and treatment-related toxicity. Therefore, it is necessary to identify predictive and prognostic biomarkers to select the patients who are most likely to benefit from, and respond well to, these therapies.     Long-Term Stabilization of Respiratory Conditions in Patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 by Continuous Positive Airway Pressure : a Report of Two Cases

    Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2 is a motor neuron disease that leads to severe congenital muscle atrophy. The majority of adult patients are at risk of death due to respiratory failure. Here, we report on two patients with SMA type 2 who repeatedly developed bronchitis and pneumonia. The patient in Case 1 was a 48-year-old female lacking exon 7 of the survival motor neuron gene (SMN) 1. The patient in Case 2 was a 37-year-old female lacking exons 7 and 8 in SMN 1 and exon 5 in the neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP) gene. We applied continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in both cases because their data on polysomnography showed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). CPAP treated their respiratory symptoms as well as those due to OSA. Moreover, CPAP stabilized the respiratory condition of Case 1 for seven years and seven months and that of Case 2 for five years and four months. These findings suggest that CPAP alone can achieve long-term improvement in the respiratory condition in patients with SMA type2

    Spontaneous Seroconversion of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen in a Young Woman with Chronic Carrier

    The incidence of spontaneous seroconversion of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the natural history of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is considered to be low in patients aged under 40 years. The clinical course and outcome of chronic HBV infection are complex and heterogeneous, and may be influenced by many factors such as HBV genotype, viral mutations, gender, age, host immune status, other viral co-infections, and alcohol consumption. We encountered a Japanese woman in whom HBsAg seroconversion had occurred when she was 32 years old, 3 years after she had given birth without any anti-viral therapy. In this case, alcohol intake, pregnancy and delivery may have affected the host-virus interaction
