Early respiratory viral infections in infants with cystic fibrosis

Viral infections contribute to morbidity in cystic fibrosis (CF), but the impact of respiratory viruses on the development of airway disease is poorly understood.
Methods
Infants with CF identified by newborn screening were enrolled prior to 4 months of age to participate in a prospective observational study at 4 centers. Clinical data were collected at clinic visits and weekly phone calls. Multiplex PCR assays were performed on nasopharyngeal swabs to detect respiratory viruses during routine visits and when symptomatic. Participants underwent bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and a subset underwent pulmonary function testing. We present findings through 8.5 months of life.
Results
Seventy infants were enrolled, mean age 3.1 ± 0.8 months. Rhinovirus was the most prevalent virus (66%), followed by parainfluenza (19%), and coronavirus (16%). Participants had a median of 1.5 viral positive swabs (range 0–10). Past viral infection was associated with elevated neutrophil concentrations and bacterial isolates in BAL fluid, including recovery of classic CF bacterial pathogens. When antibiotics were prescribed for respiratory-related indications, viruses were identified in 52% of those instances.
Conclusions
Early viral infections were associated with greater neutrophilic inflammation and bacterial pathogens. Early viral infections appear to contribute to initiation of lower airway inflammation in infants with CF. Antibiotics were commonly prescribed in the setting of a viral infection. Future investigations examining longitudinal relationships between viral infections, airway microbiome, and antibiotic use will allow us to elucidate the interplay between these factors in young children with CF
The host galaxy of the z=2.4 radio-loud AGN MRC 0406-244 as seen by HST
We present multicolour Hubble Space Telescope images of the powerful z=2.4
radio galaxy MRC 0406-244 and model its complex morphology with several
components including a host galaxy, a point source, and extended nebular and
continuum emission. We suggest that the main progenitor of this radio galaxy
was a normal, albeit massive (M ~10^{11} solar masses), star-forming galaxy.
The optical stellar disc of the host galaxy is smooth and well described by a
S\'ersic profile, which argues against a recent major merger, however there is
also a point-source component which may be the remnant of a minor merger. The
half-light radius of the optical disc is constrained to lie in the range 3.5 to
8.2kpc, which is of similar size to coeval star forming galaxies.
Biconical shells of nebular emission and UV-bright continuum extend out from
the host galaxy along the radio jet axis, which is also the minor axis of the
host galaxy. The origin of the continuum emission is uncertain, but it is most
likely to be young stars or dust-scattered light from the AGN, and it is
possible that stars are forming from this material at a rate of
200^{+1420}_{-110} solar masses per year.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Evidence for a direct band gap in the topological insulator Bi2Se3 from theory and experiment
Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab-initio GW
calculations, we unambiguously show that the widely investigated
three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3 has a direct band gap at the
Gamma point. Experimentally, this is shown by a three-dimensional band mapping
in large fractions of the Brillouin zone. Theoretically, we demonstrate that
the valence band maximum is located at the Brillouin center only if many-body
effects are included in the calculation. Otherwise, it is found in a
high-symmetry mirror plane away from the zone center.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
A SINFONI view of flies in the Spiderweb: a galaxy cluster in the making
The environment of the high-z radio galaxy PKS 1138-262 at z~2.2 is a prime
example of a forming galaxy cluster. We use deep SINFONI data to perform a
detailed study of the kinematics of the galaxies within 60 kpc of the radio
core and we link this to the kinematics of the protocluster on the megaparsec
scale. Identification of optical emission lines shows that 11 galaxies are at
the redshift of the protocluster. The density of line emitters is more than an
order of magnitude higher in the core of the protocluster than the larger scale
environment. This implies a matter overdensity in the core of delta_m~70 which
is similar to the outskirts of local galaxy clusters. The velocity distribution
of the confirmed satellite galaxies shows a broad, double-peaked velocity
structure with sigma=1360+/-206 km/s. A similar broad, double-peaked
distribution was found in a previous study targeting the large scale
protocluster structure, indicating that a common process is acting on both
small and large scales. Including all spectroscopically confirmed protocluster
galaxies, a velocity dispersion of 1013+/-87 km/s is found. We show that the
protocluster has likely decoupled from the Hubble flow and is a dynamically
evolved structure. Comparison to the Millenium simulation indicates that the
protocluster velocity distribution is consistent with that of the most massive
haloes at z~2, but we rule out that the protocluster is a fully virialized
structure based on dynamical arguments and its X-ray luminosity. Comparison to
merging haloes in the Millennium simulation shows that the structure as
observed in and around the Spiderweb galaxy is best interpreted as being the
result of a merger between two massive haloes. We propose that this merger can
result in an increase in star formation and AGN activity in the protocluster
core and is possibly an important stage in the evolution of massive cD

Seasonal variation of hip fractures in patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
Introduction: Seasonal variation of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) presentation has been reported, with higher rates of presentation in months associated with times of lower serum vitamin D levels. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the timing of hip fracture in patients with BPPV.
Methods: A retrospective review (2013 to 2019) of adult patients was performed at a tertiary care academic center to identify patients with hip fracture due to ground level fall (ICD-10 code S72) and a previously established diagnosis of vestibular disorder (ICD-10 codes H81-83, A88.1, and R42). Included patients were matched by age and sex to control for patients who had hip fracture without a vestibular diagnosis. Patient charts were reviewed, and demographic and clinical data were extracted related to hip fracture and prior vestibular diagnosis. Groups were subdivided based on whether patients had a hip fracture from January to June versus July to December. Fisher’s exact test was used to evaluate for a difference in seasonal variation between groups.
Results: There were 201 patients with vestibular disorders of whom 27 patients carried the diagnosis of BPPV, with a mean age of 80.4 years. The rates of hip fracture among patients with BPPV was higher in the period extending from January to June (63.0%) versus July to December (37.0%), [odds ratio 1.59, 95% CI 0.66-4.00]. The rate of hip fracture was not significantly different between these time periods for the control group (51.7% versus 48.3%) or the vestibular group (53.2% versus 46.8%).
Conclusion: These results offer preliminary evidence that, in addition to an increased presentation for BPPV during months associated with decreased serum vitamin D, injuries due to BPPV may be increased as well. Production of Secondary Organic Aerosol During Aging of Biomass Burning Smoke From Fresh Fuels and Its Relationship to VOC Precursors
After smoke from burning biomass is emitted into the atmosphere, chemical and physical processes change the composition and amount of organic aerosol present in the aged, diluted plume. During the fourth Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment, we performed smog-chamber experiments to investigate formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and multiphase oxidation of primary organic aerosol (POA). We simulated atmospheric aging of diluted smoke from a variety of biomass fuels while measuring particle composition using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry. We quantified SOA formation using a tracer ion for low-volatility POA as a reference standard (akin to a naturally occurring internal standard). These smoke aging experiments revealed variable organic aerosol (OA) enhancements, even for smoke from similar fuels and aging mechanisms. This variable OA enhancement correlated well with measured differences in the amounts of emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could subsequently be oxidized to form SOA. For some aging experiments, we were able to predict the SOA production to within a factor of 2 using a fuel-specific VOC emission inventory that was scaled by burn-specific toluene measurements. For fires of coniferous fuels that were dominated by needle burning, volatile biogenic compounds were the dominant precursor class. For wiregrass fires, furans were the dominant SOA precursors. We used a POA tracer ion to calculate the amount of mass lost due to gas-phase oxidation and subsequent volatilization of semivolatile POA. Less than 5% of the POA mass was lost via multiphase oxidation-driven evaporation during up to 2 hr of equivalent atmospheric oxidation
Low temperature superlattice in monoclinic PZT
TEM has shown that the strongly piezoelectric material Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3
separates into two phases at low temperatures. The majority phase is the
monoclinic phase previously found by x-ray diffraction. The minority phase,
with a nanoscale coherence length, is a slightly distorted variant of the first
resulting from the anti-phase rotation of the oxygen octahedra about [111].
This work clears up a recent controversy about the origin of superlattice peaks
in these materials, and supports recent theoretical results predicting the

Gyrokinetic analysis and simulation of pedestals, to identify the culprits for energy losses using fingerprints
Fusion performance in tokamaks hinges critically on the efficacy of the Edge
Transport Barrier (ETB) at suppressing energy losses. The new concept of
fingerprints is introduced to identify the instabilities that cause the
transport losses in the ETB of many of today's experiments, from widely posited
candidates. Analysis of the Gyrokinetic-Maxwell equations, and gyrokinetic
simulations of experiments, find that each mode type produces characteristic
ratios of transport in the various channels: density, heat and impurities.
This, together with experimental observations of transport in some channel, or,
of the relative size of the driving sources of channels, can identify or
determine the dominant modes causing energy transport. In multiple ELMy H-mode
cases that are examined, these fingerprints indicate that MHD-like modes are
apparently not the dominant agent of energy transport; rather, this role is
played by Micro-Tearing Modes (MTM) and Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG)
modes, and in addition, possibly Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG)/Trapped
Electron Modes (ITG/TEM) on JET. MHD-like modes may dominate the electron
particle losses. Fluctuation frequency can also be an important means of
identification, and is often closely related to the transport fingerprint. The
analytical arguments unify and explain previously disparate experimental
observations on multiple devices, including DIII-D, JET and ASDEX-U, and
detailed simulations of two DIII-D ETBs also demonstrate and corroborate this
Irreducible Representations of Diperiodic Groups
The irreducible representations of all of the 80 diperiodic groups, being the
symmetries of the systems translationally periodical in two directions, are
calculated. To this end, each of these groups is factorized as the product of a
generalized translational group and an axial point group. The results are
presented in the form of the tables, containing the matrices of the irreducible
representations of the generators of the groups. General properties and some
physical applications (degeneracy and topology of the energy bands, selection
