Magnetic order in spin-1 and spin-3/2 interpolating square-triangle Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Using the coupled cluster method we investigate spin-ss J1J_{1}-J2â€ČJ_{2}' Heisenberg antiferromagnets (HAFs) on an infinite, anisotropic, triangular lattice when the spin quantum number s=1s=1 or s=3/2s=3/2. With respect to a square-lattice geometry the model has antiferromagnetic (J1>0J_{1} > 0) bonds between nearest neighbours and competing (J2â€Č>0J_{2}' > 0) bonds between next-nearest neighbours across only one of the diagonals of each square plaquette, the same one in each square. In a topologically equivalent triangular-lattice geometry, we have two types of nearest-neighbour bonds: namely the J2â€Č≡ÎșJ1J_{2}' \equiv \kappa J_{1} bonds along parallel chains and the J1J_{1} bonds producing an interchain coupling. The model thus interpolates between an isotropic HAF on the square lattice at Îș=0\kappa = 0 and a set of decoupled chains at Îș→∞\kappa \rightarrow \infty, with the isotropic HAF on the triangular lattice in between at Îș=1\kappa = 1. For both the s=1s=1 and the s=3/2s=3/2 models we find a second-order quantum phase transition at Îșc=0.615±0.010\kappa_{c}=0.615 \pm 0.010 and Îșc=0.575±0.005\kappa_{c}=0.575 \pm 0.005 respectively, between a N\'{e}el antiferromagnetic state and a helical state. In both cases the ground-state energy EE and its first derivative dE/dÎșdE/d\kappa are continuous at Îș=Îșc\kappa=\kappa_{c}, while the order parameter for the transition (viz., the average on-site magnetization) does not go to zero on either side of the transition. The transition at Îș=Îșc\kappa = \kappa_{c} for both the s=1s=1 and s=3/2s=3/2 cases is analogous to that observed in our previous work for the s=1/2s=1/2 case at a value Îșc=0.80±0.01\kappa_{c}=0.80 \pm 0.01. However, for the higher spin values the transition is of continuous (second-order) type, as in the classical case, whereas for the s=1/2s=1/2 case it appears to be weakly first-order in nature (although a second-order transition could not be excluded).Comment: 17 pages, 8 figues (Figs. 2-7 have subfigs. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a second generation water Cherenkov detector designed to determine whether the currently observed solar neutrino deficit is a result of neutrino oscillations. The detector is unique in its use of D2O as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent test of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis by comparison of the charged- and neutral-current interaction rates. In this paper the physical properties, construction, and preliminary operation of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are described. Data and predicted operating parameters are provided whenever possible.Comment: 58 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Nucl. Inst. Meth. Uses elsart and epsf style files. Phase Behavior of Aqueous Na-K-Mg-Ca-CI-NO3 Mixtures: Isopiestic Measurements and Thermodynamic Modeling

A comprehensive model has been established for calculating thermodynamic properties of multicomponent aqueous systems containing the Na{sup +}, K{sup +}, Mg{sup 2+}, Ca{sup 2+}, Cl{sup -}, and NO{sub 3}{sup -} ions. The thermodynamic framework is based on a previously developed model for mixed-solvent electrolyte solutions. The framework has been designed to reproduce the properties of salt solutions at temperatures ranging from the freezing point to 300 C and concentrations ranging from infinite dilution to the fused salt limit. The model has been parameterized using a combination of an extensive literature database and new isopiestic measurements for thirteen salt mixtures at 140 C. The measurements have been performed using Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) previously designed gravimetric isopiestic apparatus, which makes it possible to detect solid phase precipitation. Water activities are reported for mixtures with a fixed ratio of salts as a function of the total apparent salt mole fraction. The isopiestic measurements reported here simultaneously reflect two fundamental properties of the system, i.e., the activity of water as a function of solution concentration and the occurrence of solid-liquid transitions. The thermodynamic model accurately reproduces the new isopiestic data as well as literature data for binary, ternary and higher-order subsystems. Because of its high accuracy in calculating vapor-liquid and solid-liquid equilibria, the model is suitable for studying deliquescence behavior of multicomponent salt systems

Measurement of the top-quark mass using a leptonic invariant mass in pp collisions at s√ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A measurement of the top-quark mass (mt) in the ttÂŻ → lepton + jets channel is presented, with an experimental technique which exploits semileptonic decays of b-hadrons produced in the top-quark decay chain. The distribution of the invariant mass mâ„“ÎŒ of the lepton, ℓ (with ℓ = e, ÎŒ), from the W-boson decay and the muon, ÎŒ, originating from the b-hadron decay is reconstructed, and a binned-template profile likelihood fit is performed to extract mt. The measurement is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 of s√ = 13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The measured value of the top-quark mass is mt = 174.41 ± 0.39 (stat.) ± 0.66 (syst.) ± 0.25 (recoil) GeV, where the third uncertainty arises from changing the PYTHIA8 parton shower gluon-recoil scheme, used in top-quark decays, to a recently developed setup

Search for resonances decaying into photon pairs in 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Searches for new resonances in the diphoton final state, with spin 0 as predicted by theories with an extended Higgs sector and with spin 2 using a warped extra-dimension benchmark model, are presented using 139 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed and upper limits are placed on the production cross-section times branching ratio to two photons as a function of the resonance mass

The invention provides a method for the production of a food product comprising a tastant. The food product according to the invention has a tastant bulk weight percentage and an inhomogeneous tastant bulk distribution. The invention provides the use of an inhomogeneous tastant bulk distribution in a food product for providing a food product with a reduced tastant bulk weight percentage. Further, the invention provides the use of an inhomogeneous tastant bulk distribution in a food product for enhancing and/or improving the sensory perception of the tastant in a food product

Oscillatory Water Sorption Test for Determining Water Uptake Behavior in Bread Crust

    No full text
In this work, water sorption kinetics of bread crust are described using an oscillatory sorption test in combination with a Langmuir type equation. Both kinetic and thermodynamic information could be obtained at the same time. An advantage of applying a Langmuir type equation for a quantitative description of the water uptake kinetics is that no prior knowledge is necessary with respect to shape and surface area of the sample. It was shown that adsorption and desorption of water to the bread crust particle surface is much faster than the experimental time used (15 min at minimum). From this, we may conclude that diffusion of water into the solid matrix is the rate-limiting step in the water sorption process. The method also allows one to calculate a Gibbs free energy. The method is suitable for use up to relative humidities of 60%
