    An equations-of-motion approach to quantum mechanics: application to a model phase transition

    We present a generalized equations-of-motion method that efficiently calculates energy spectra and matrix elements for algebraic models. The method is applied to a 5-dimensional quartic oscillator that exhibits a quantum phase transition between vibrational and rotational phases. For certain parameters, 10 by 10 matrices give better results than obtained by diagonalising 1000 by 1000 matrices.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Is the brick-wall model unstable for a rotating background?

    The stability of the brick wall model is analyzed in a rotating background. It is shown that in the Kerr background without horizon but with an inner boundary a scalar field has complex-frequency modes and that, however, the imaginary part of the complex frequency can be small enough compared with the Hawking temperature if the inner boundary is sufficiently close to the horizon, say at a proper altitude of Planck scale. Hence, the time scale of the instability due to the complex frequencies is much longer than the relaxation time scale of the thermal state with the Hawking temperature. Since ambient fields should settle in the thermal state in the latter time scale, the instability is not so catastrophic. Thus, the brick wall model is well defined even in a rotating background if the inner boundary is sufficiently close to the horizon.Comment: Latex, 17 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Phys.     Raman study of Fano interference in p-type doped silicon

    As the silicon industry continues to push the limits of device dimensions, tools such as Raman spectroscopy are ideal to analyze and characterize the doped silicon channels. The effect of inter-valence band transitions on the zone center optical phonon in heavily p-type doped silicon is studied by Raman spectroscopy for a wide range of excitation wavelengths extending from the red (632.8 nm) into the ultra-violet (325 nm). The asymmetry in the one-phonon Raman lineshape is attributed to a Fano interference involving the overlap of a continuum of electronic excitations with a discrete phonon state. We identify a transition above and below the one-dimensional critical point (E = 3.4 eV) in the electronic excitation spectrum of silicon. The relationship between the anisotropic silicon band structure and the penetration depth is discussed in the context of possible device applications.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, pape

    We investigate the quantized scalar field on the Kaluza-Klein spacetimes of MD×Td×SFZM^D\times T^d \times S_{FZ}, where MDM^D is the ordinary DD dimensional flat Minkowski spacetimes, TdT^d is the dd dimensional commutative torus, and SFZS_{FZ} is a noncommutative fuzzy two sphere with a fixed quantized radius. After evaluating the one-loop correction to the spectrum we use the mass-corrected term to compute the Casimir energy of the scalar field on the model spacetime. It is seen that, for some values of DD and dd, the Casimir energy due to vacuum fluctuation in the model spacetimes could give rise a repulsive force to stabilize the commutative torus.Comment: 13 page

    The distributional consequences of tax reforms under capital-skill complementarity

    This paper analyses wage inequality and the welfare effects of changes in capital and labour income tax rates for different types of agents. To achieve this, we develop a model that allows for capital–skill complementarity given non-uniform distributions of asset holdings and labour skills. We find that capital tax reductions lead to the highest aggregate welfare gains but are skill-biased and thus increase inequality. However, our analysis also shows that the inequality effects of capital tax reductions are lower over the transition period compared with the long run

    SUMO chain formation is required for response to replication arrest in S. pombe

    SUMO is a ubiquitin-like protein that is post-translationally attached to one or more lysine residues on target proteins. Despite having only 18% sequence identity with ubiquitin, SUMO contains the conserved betabetaalphabetabetaalphabeta fold present in ubiquitin. However, SUMO differs from ubiquitin in having an extended N-terminus. In S. pombe the N-terminus of SUMO/Pmt3 is significantly longer than those of SUMO in S. cerevisiae, human and Drosophila. Here we investigate the role of this N-terminal region. We have used two dimensional gel electrophoresis to demonstrate that S. pombe SUMO/Pmt3 is phosphorylated, and that this occurs on serine residues at the extreme N-terminus of the protein. Mutation of these residues (in pmt3-1) results in a dramatic reduction in both the levels of high Mr SUMO-containing species and of total SUMO/Pmt3, indicating that phosphorylation of SUMO/Pmt3 is required for its stability. Despite the significant reduction in high Mr SUMO-containing species, pmt3-1 cells do not display an aberrant cell morphology or sensitivity to genotoxins or stress. Additionally, we demonstrate that two lysine residues in the N-terminus of S. pombe SUMO/Pmt3 (K14 and K30) can act as acceptor sites for SUMO chain formation in vitro. Inability to form SUMO chains results in aberrant cell and nuclear morphologies, including stretched and fragmented chromatin. SUMO chain mutants are sensitive to the DNA synthesis inhibitor, hydroxyurea (HU), but not to other genotoxins, such as UV, MMS or CPT. This implies a role for SUMO chains in the response to replication arrest in S. pomb

    Physical properties of dense cores in Orion B9

    We aim to determine the physical and chemical properties of dense cores in Orion B9. We observed the NH3(1,1) and (2,2), and the N2H+(3-2) lines towards the submm peak positions. These data are used in conjunction with our LABOCA 870 micron dust continuum data. The gas kinetic temperature in the cores is between ~9.4-13.9 K. The non-thermal velocity dispersion is subsonic in most of the cores. The non-thermal linewidth in protostellar cores appears to increase with increasing bolometric luminosity. The core masses are very likely drawn from the same parent distribution as the core masses in Orion B North. Starless cores in the region are likely to be gravitationally bound, and thus prestellar. Some of the cores have a lower radial velocity than the systemic velocity of the region, suggesting that they are members of the "low-velocity part" of Orion B. The observed core-separation distances deviate from the corresponding random-like model distributions. The distances between the nearest-neighbours are comparable to the thermal Jeans length. The fractional abundances of NH3 and N2H+ in the cores are ~1.5-9.8x10^{-8} and ~0.2-5.9x10^{-10}, respectively. The NH3 abundance appears to decrease with increasing H2 column and number densities. The NH3/N2H+ column density ratio is larger in starless cores than in cores with embedded protostars. The core population in Orion B9 is comparable in physical properties to those in nearby low-mass star-forming regions. It is unclear if the origin of cores could be explained by turbulent fragmentation. On the other hand, many of the core properties conform with the picture of dynamic core evolution. The Orion B9 region has probably been influenced by the feedback from the nearby Ori OB 1b group, and the fragmentation of the parental cloud into cores could be caused by gravitational instability.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables.     Large two-level magnetoresistance effect in doped manganite grain boundary junctions

    We performed a systematic analysis of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect in single grain boundary junctions formed in epitaxial La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) films deposited on SrTiO(3) bicrystals. For magnetic fields H applied parallel to the grain boundary barrier, an ideal two-level resistance switching behavior with sharp transitions is observed with a TMR effect of up to 300% at 4.2 K and still above 100% at 77 K. Varying the angle between H and the grain boundary results in differently shaped resistance vs H curves.
