Role of five-quark components in radiative and strong decays of the Lambda(1405) resonance
Within an extended chiral constituent quark model, three- and five-quark
structure of the resonance is investigated. Helicity
amplitudes for the electromagnetic decays (, ), and transition amplitudes for
strong decays (, ) are drived, as
well as the relevant decay widths. The experimental value for the strong decay
width, MeV, is well
reproduced with about 50% of five-quark admixture in the .
Important effects due to the configuration mixings among
, and are
found. In addition, transitions between the three- and five-quark components in
the baryons turn out to be significant in both radiative and strong decays of
the resonance.Comment: typos and numerical mistakes corrected, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Exploitation and resistance: a comparative analysis of the Chinese cheap labour electronics and high-value added IT sectors.
This article compares the electronics sector in the area of Shenzhen, based on cheap labour assembling goods for export, with the IT sector in the area of Shanghai, relying on a more skilled workforce manufacturing high-value added goods. It is asked in what way these rather different locations within the global political economy condition the form and contents of resistance in these two sectors. The article concludes that industrial relations are more confrontational in the electronics sector with informal labour NGOs supporting workers in getting their individual and collective rights. The IT sector, in contrast, is characterised by consensual relationships. Informal labour NGOs concentrate on organising cultural activities for workers’ free time, performing a mediating role between employers and employees, supported by the government
Cognitive dysfunction in naturally occurring canine idiopathic epilepsy
Globally, epilepsy is a common serious brain disorder. In addition to seizure activity, epilepsy is associated with cognitive impairments including static cognitive impairments present at onset, progressive seizure-induced impairments and co-morbid dementia. Epilepsy occurs naturally in domestic dogs but its impact on canine cognition has yet to be studied, despite canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) recognised as a spontaneous model of dementia. Here we use data from a psychometrically validated tool, the canine cognitive dysfunction rating (CCDR) scale, to compare cognitive dysfunction in dogs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy (IE) with controls while accounting for age. An online cross-sectional study resulted in a sample of 4051 dogs, of which n = 286 had been diagnosed with IE. Four factors were significantly associated with a diagnosis of CCD (above the diagnostic cut-off of CCDR ≥50): (i) epilepsy diagnosis: dogs with epilepsy were at higher risk; (ii) age: older dogs were at higher risk; (iii) weight: lighter dogs (kg) were at higher risk; (iv) training history: dogs with more exposure to training activities were at lower risk. Impairments in memory were most common in dogs with IE, but progression of impairments was not observed compared to controls. A significant interaction between epilepsy and age was identified, with IE dogs exhibiting a higher risk of CCD at a young age, while control dogs followed the expected pattern of low-risk throughout middle age, with risk increasing exponentially in geriatric years. Within the IE sub-population, dogs with a history of cluster seizures and high seizure frequency had higher CCDR scores. The age of onset, nature and progression of cognitive impairment in the current IE dogs appear divergent from those classically seen in CCD. Longitudinal monitoring of cognitive function from seizure onset is required to further characterise these impairments
Search for the scalar and mesons in the reactions
It is shown that the reactions give a good
chance for observing scalar and mesons. In the photon energy region
less then 100 MeV the vector meson contributions are negligible in comparison with the scalar
mesons for
greater than
. Using two-channel treatment of the
scattering the predictions for
are derived. The four quark model, the model of molecule and
the model of scalar and mesons are discussed.Comment: 31 pages, 10 ps files of figures, minor numerical changes, Appendix

Light hadron, Charmonium(-like) and Bottomonium(-like) states
Hadron physics represents the study of strongly interacting matter in all its
manifestations and the understanding of its properties and interactions. The
interest on this field has been revitalized by the discovery of new light
hadrons, charmonium- and bottomonium-like states. I review the most recent
experimental results from different experiments.Comment: Presented at Lepton-Photon 2011, Mumbai, India; 21 pages, 18 figures;

Thermodynamics of quantum systems under dynamical control
In this review the debated rapport between thermodynamics and quantum
mechanics is addressed in the framework of the theory of
periodically-driven/controlled quantum-thermodynamic machines. The basic model
studied here is that of a two-level system (TLS), whose energy is periodically
modulated while the system is coupled to thermal baths. When the modulation
interval is short compared to the bath memory time, the system-bath
correlations are affected, thereby causing cooling or heating of the TLS,
depending on the interval. In steady state, a periodically-modulated TLS
coupled to two distinct baths constitutes the simplest quantum heat machine
(QHM) that may operate as either an engine or a refrigerator, depending on the
modulation rate. We find their efficiency and power-output bounds and the
conditions for attaining these bounds. An extension of this model to multilevel
systems shows that the QHM power output can be boosted by the multilevel
degeneracy.
These results are used to scrutinize basic thermodynamic principles: (i)
Externally-driven/modulated QHMs may attain the Carnot efficiency bound, but
when the driving is done by a quantum device ("piston"), the efficiency
strongly depends on its initial quantum state. Such dependence has been unknown
thus far. (ii) The refrigeration rate effected by QHMs does not vanish as the
temperature approaches absolute zero for certain quantized baths, e.g.,
magnons, thous challenging Nernst's unattainability principle. (iii)
System-bath correlations allow more work extraction under periodic control than
that expected from the Szilard-Landauer principle, provided the period is in
the non-Markovian domain. Thus, dynamically-controlled QHMs may benefit from
hitherto unexploited thermodynamic resources
Measurement of the Ds lifetime
We report precise measurement of the Ds meson lifetime. The data were taken
by the SELEX experiment (E781) spectrometer using 600 GeV/c Sigma-, pi- and p
beams. The measurement has been done using 918 reconstructed Ds. The lifetime
of the Ds is measured to be 472.5 +- 17.2 +- 6.6 fs, using K*(892)0K+- and phi
pi+- decay modes. The lifetime ratio of Ds to D0 is 1.145+-0.049.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures submitted to Phys. Lett.
Confirmation of the Double Charm Baryon Xi_cc+ via its Decay to p D+ K-
We observes a signal for the double charm baryon Xi_cc+ in the charged decay
mode Xi_cc+ -> p D+ K- to complement the previously reported decay Xi_cc+ ->
Lambda_c K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment
(E781) at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events
over an expected background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38+/-0.13 events.
The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent
signal is less than 6.4E-4. The observed mass of this state is
(3518+/-3)MeV/c^2, consistent with the published result. Averaging the two
results gives a mass of (3518.7+/-1.7)MeV/c^2. The observation of this new weak
decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double
charm baryon. The relative branching ratio Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> pD+K-)/Gamma(Xi_cc+
-> Lambda_c K- pi+) = 0.36+/-0.21.Comment: 11 pages, 6 included eps figures. v2 includes improved statistical

First Measurement of pi e -> pi e gamma Pion Virtual Compton Scattering
Pion Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi e --> pi e gamma
was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi-
beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi- and the
final state pi-, electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral
perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the
experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (9)
and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the
kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The
corresponding pi- VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+-13 nb, in
agreement with the theoretical expectation sigma=34.7 nb.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, 25 references, SELEX home page is

First Observation of the Doubly Charmed Baryon Xi_cc^+
We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi_cc^+ in the charged
decay mode Xi_cc^+ --> Lambda_c^+ K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm
hadro-production experiment at Fermilab. We observe an excess of 15.9 events
over an expected background of 6.1 +/- 0.5 events, a statistical significance
of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is (3519 +/- 1) MeV/c^2. The
Gaussian mass width of this state is 3MeV/c^2, consistent with resolution; its
lifetime is less than 33fsec at 90% confidence.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
