Language, Immigration and Acculturation in the Short Stories of Ha Jin
The Problems of Acculturation: Flushing, Queens, in the Short Stories of Ha Jin
Abstract:
Noted author Ha Jin is often thought of as a Chinese author despite the fact that all of his writing has been written in English. Two of his later works, A Free Life (2007) and A Good Fall (2009) are set among the Chinese community in Flushing, Queens. This essay examines three short stories An English Professor, A Pension Plan, and Temporary Love from A Good Fall. In these works, Jin discusses the problems of acculturation these immigrants face, including learning English, finding employment, and dealing with forced separation. The stories depict the treacherous territory the immigrants, as well as the author himself at times, traverse as they dwell between two languages, two cultures, two literatures, two countries
The accuracy of estimating the item difficulty parameter of the one parameter logistic model using the pairwise method in light of sample size and test length change
This study aimed at investigating The accuracy of estimating the item difficulty parameter of the one parameter logistic model using the pairwise method in light of sample size and test length change. To achieve the study objective, the data of binary responses were generated by five different sample size (50, 100, 250, 500, 1000) examinee, and four different length test (20, 30, 40, 70) item using simra function in the pairwise package in R program by determining the level of the ability and difficulty parameter is between (-3, 3) normally distributed with a mean 0 and a standard deviation 1. To answer the questions of the study, the researcher used R program for estimating the difficulty parameter using the pairwise method, and estimating the ability using the weighted likelihood estimation method. The results of the study revealed statistically significant differences at α = 0.05 between the standard errors of the estimates of the difficulty parameter due to the sample size for sample size 1000 examinee. The results of the study revealed statistically significant differences at α = 0.05 between the standard errors of the estimates of the ability parameter due to the sample size and test length and interaction. The study recommended conduct studies which compare between the likelihood method, the Bayes method, and the pairwise method in the accuracy of estimating the parameters of the item

Single Charged Higgs production as a probe of CP violation at a Muon Collider
We consider single charged Higgs () production in association with a
boson at colliders, in the context of the general CP
violating Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). We find that large cross-sections for
the processes are possible, and offer an
attractive way of producing at colliders. The difference
in the cross-sections for and may exceed 1000 fb, and this
represents a novel way of probing CP violation in the Higgs sector.Comment: 15 pages, LaTex, 6 figure

Advances in Microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip Technologies
Advances in molecular biology are enabling rapid and efficient analyses for
effective intervention in domains such as biology research, infectious disease
management, food safety, and biodefense. The emergence of microfluidics and
nanotechnologies has enabled both new capabilities and instrument sizes
practical for point-of-care. It has also introduced new functionality, enhanced
sensitivity, and reduced the time and cost involved in conventional molecular
diagnostic techniques. This chapter reviews the application of microfluidics
for molecular diagnostics methods such as nucleic acid amplification,
next-generation sequencing, high resolution melting analysis, cytogenetics,
protein detection and analysis, and cell sorting. We also review microfluidic
sample preparation platforms applied to molecular diagnostics and targeted to
sample-in, answer-out capabilities
